Chapter 43 Sorrow
Chapter 43 Sorrow
As soon as Joseph finished speaking, he felt the pressure surrounding him vanish instantly. Looking at Jared again, he couldn’t tell if it was just his imagination, but he sensed a hint of kindness in the boss’s eyes.
“Kindly” might not be the most appropriate word to describe it, but given the situation, Joseph struggled to find any other word that fits.
Was it because he had called Julia “madam“?
After leaving the hotel, Julia opened the car door and said, “Brother, get in the car, and I’ll take you back to the hospital.”
Conrad furrowed his brow and looked at Jared.
“Julia, is he your boyfriend?”
Jared’s gaze shifted to Julia, waiting to see how she would respond. Would she reveal their true identities and tell Conrad that they were married?
Just as Jared half–squinted his eyes in anticipation, Julia spoke up and said, “He and I are just ordinary friends.”
Upon hearing this, Jared’s sunny expression instantly turned cloudy, with a lingering haze between his eyebrows and eyes.
“Are you just ordinary friends?” Conrad asked.
“In a way, not the kind of relationship you might be thinking,” Julia replied truthfully.
Indeed, it wasn’t the boyfriend–girlfriend relationship that Conrad believed, but rather a legally legitimate marital bond.
“That’s good,” Conrad breathed a sigh of relief.
He thought that Julia might have been overwhelmed by the situation, so she casually found someone to pose as her boyfriend.
However, what worried him more was Jared’s attractive appearance. He seemed like a gigolo providing special services.
“Get in the car,” Julia said.
“Okay.”
After Julia dropped Conrad off at the hospital and returned to the car, she noticed Jared’s expression, which was as dark as the bottom of a pot.
What happened? Didn’t he just cooperate well with her acting? Why did his expression change so quickly? Is it because Philip scolded him?
“Don’t take Mr. Watson’s words to heart. Getting angry with someone like him is a waste of energy,” Julia advised.
“Do you think I’m someone who cares about the words of unimportant people?” Jared brushed off the irrelevant comments.
However, what bothered him was Julia’s remark about being “ordinary friends.”
Jared’s words puzzled Julia.

“So why did your expression change in an instant?”
The frustration between Jared’s eyebrows was evident, and after a few seconds, he placed his hand on the steering wheel and accelerated to drive.
Julia continued to scrutinize the man with a skeptical gaze, feeling that he was elusive.
Forget it; it’s not worth overthinking.
“Stop there,” Julia pointed to the nearby vegetable market.
Despite feeling angry and unhappy, Jared still followed Julia’s instructions and parked the car next to the vegetable market.
“What are you doing?” he asked.
Julia unfastened her seat belt and said, “You did me a big favor today. I plan to make dishes myself. Thank you very much.”
“Do you even know how to cook?” Jared looked at Julia with a slightly surprised expression.
Julia gave Jared a mysterious smile and pushed open the car door to get out.
Jared furrowed his brow and remained silent for a couple of seconds before also getting out of the
car.
Hearing the commotion, Julia turned around and said, “Are you coming in with me?”
“What? I can’t go in?” Jared asked, not giving a straightforward answer.
“Of course, you can. It’s just that it’s quite dirty inside,” Julia replied, glancing at the man’s high–end leather shoes, feeling that he stood out in the vegetable market frequented by ordinary people.
In other words, Julia’s words about Jared standing high on the food chain and not even visiting a high–end supermarket made him uncomfortable. It felt like she was emphasizing their different backgrounds, habits, and lifestyles.
“You are considered wealthy as well. Even if the Watson family is harsh on you, as a wealthy lady, you wouldn’t personally cook, right?” Julia remarked.
“In this day and age, even ordinary girls don’t know how to cook, let alone a daughter born into a wealthy family.”
Julia corrected him, “Well, you’re wrong. I may be considered a wealthy lady, but I’m still not as well off as the fake daughter of the Watson family. When Mr. Watson was at home, Natalia would showcase herself as a virtuous wife and mother by providing her with food. But if he was not at home, tut–tut, I would cook for both Natalia and her daughter.”
Jared observed Julia’s way of selecting vegetables, realizing she was quite skilled at it. He no longer thought she was bragging.
“Why didn’t you tell your father?” Jared inquired.
“Would it have made any difference if I had told him? You saw Mr. Watson today, his heart leans towards them,” Julia sighed.
Jared furrowed his brows, feeling increasingly heartbroken. “Didn’t you ever resist?”
Julia’s temperament didn’t seem like the type to passively endure adversity.
“I did resist, but the result was that my stepmother beat me up and confined me in a dark room

without food. It was like living the lives of Snow White and Cinderella,” she shared in a relaxed tone, recounting her painful past.
Hearing her speak so calmly about her most painful experiences, Jared felt a tight grip on his heart, as if it were bleeding from pain.
Overwhelmed with emotions, Jared pulled Julia into his arms, holding her tightly.
