Chapter 183: A Slap on Carter’s Face
Exasperation was etched on Julia’s face, and her icy gaze seemed ready to retaliate. But just as she was about to react, her wrist was abruptly seized, interrupting her intended action.
This scenario was all too familiar to Julia. In moments of danger, Jared had consistently appeared by her side, gripping her wrist and enveloping her in his protective embrace. Hopeful thoughts. flickered in her mind. ‘Is Jared here? Is this him?”
But before she could fully comprehend the situation, her wrist was pulled with a force that caused her to stumble toward the source of the pull.
Reality shattered her hope as she realized that it wasn’t Jared. Instantly, the panic in Julia’s expression dissipated, replaced by an air of indifference. Just then, a voice that grated on her nerves reverberated in her ears.
“Mr. Walker, you’ve got the wrong person. She’s my friend.”
‘Why does it have to be Carter?‘ Julia inwardly groaned in annoyance.
Summoning her resolve, she forcefully pulled her hand from Carter’s grip, accompanied by a glare. Carter glanced at her with a furrowed brow and attempted to defuse the situation, saying, “Let’s not make a scene.”
“Humph!” Julia huffed dismissively. “Who do you think you are? You tell me not to cause a scene, and I’m just supposed to comply? By the way, wasn’t it this person who initiated the trouble in the first place? Are you blind?” Her words dripped with sharpness and disdain.
Julia’s words were like a barrage of daggers aimed at Carter, turning his expression sour. Ignoring his reaction, she continued, “I remember a year ago when a man harassed me. You were supposed to stand up for me, but the moment you realized the harasser was a well–connected businessman, not only did you fail to defend me, but you even established a long–term partnership with him. At that time, I was your fiancée. Yet you prioritized your own gains over my well–being. Carter, you’re truly a despicable fraud! I didn’t think that Vivien’s act of taking you away would be a blessing for
me.”
Julia’s voice was dripping with resentment and scorn as she confronted Carter with her past grievances.
Carter’s expression darkened even further, a storm of frustration and gloom brewing on his face. “I didn’t leak that photo,” he declared, his words laced with a mixture of defense and exasperation.
Carter believed that Julia’s public confrontation was somehow related to the recent photo that had gone viral. He assumed she was accusing him of being responsible for the leak.
“Not you? Then who do you say sent it? The other party used that photo to blackmail you, and you already paid to keep them quiet, which means only you have that photo,” Julia countered, her tone accusatory.
In truth, Julia had a strong inkling that Carter wasn’t the culprit behind this incident, and her words now were a way to release the pent–up emotions from her recent confrontation with Jared.
“It wasn’t me! I’ve told you I’m not that kind of person!” Carter insisted with unwavering determination.
“If not you, then it must have been Vivien. She had the motive to tarnish my reputation, so she released that photo,” Julia fired back, her irritation apparent.
Carter’s irritation mounted at Julia’s accusations against Vivien. He retorted, “Julia, can you stop

pinning everything on Vivien? You need evidence to make such claims. You didn’t witness it firsthand, so how can you be sure she’s responsible?”
“Huh!” Julia scoffed, her frustration evident. “What’s the point of witnessing something firsthand? I presented the video of Vivien pushing you into the pool before, yet you and your mother still believed it was me. Fine, I’m done with this! I don’t want to exchange another word with you!” With a sudden surge of strength, Julia pulled her hand free from Carter’s grip. She stared at her own hand, a look of disdain crossing her face.
“So disgusting!” she exclaimed with a disgusted tone as if she wanted to cleanse herself of his
touch.
Carter clenched his jaw in a mixture of embarrassment and frustration. Being publicly humiliated. by Julia in front of a crowd of prominent figures was a blow to his pride.
Refusing to let the matter rest, Carter tried to salvage the situation. “Julia, can we discuss this outside?” he proposed, his voice containing a hint of urgency.
He even attempted to grasp Julia’s hand, but she had reached her limit. Swiftly, she lifted her hand and struck Carter’s cheek, causing a resounding slap. In the room filled with prominent onlookers, shock painted their faces. Julia’s unexpected fierceness had caught them off guard. Even Carter was taken aback by the public humiliation, never anticipating such a response from
her.
Carter’s face burned with both the physical sting of the slap and the shame of the situation. He felt a level of humiliation he had never known before. While he simmered with anger, contemplating a heated confrontation with Julia, a fellow businessman nearby intervened to defuse the tension.
“Miss Watson, I understand you have misunderstandings with Mr. Ross but matters like these should be resolved at home. As a man, he deserves some face in public. How about we all pretend we didn’t see anything just now? You two should go out and resolve this first,” one of the businessmen advised.
After the intense argument between Julia and Carter just now, everyone present had figured out their past.
Despite the businessman’s considerate approach, Julia’s emotions had already overwhelmed her. She confronted the man, saying, “It’s really amusing. Who do you think you are? What right do you have to interfere with me? Also, I have no relationship with Carter anymore. Why should I give him a face? I’m not his wife!” Those words of hers struck both the businessman and Carter.
Carter stared at Julia, his mouth hanging open in surprise, at a loss for words. He had noticed this before. When Julia was his fiancée, Carter could reprimand her as he pleased, especially when she was at fault. But now, with their connection severed, he couldn’t even point fingers at her.
“Birds of a feather flock together, a group of unscrupulous friends!” Julia remarked as her disgusted gaze swept around the room before she opened the door and left.
If she hadn’t drunk so much, she would have really liked to beat up Carter and the middle–aged man who had harassed her earlier.
A businessman cleared his throat and looked at the pale–faced Carter. “Mr. Ross, don’t overthink it. You’re still young and haven’t seen it all. Women can be like this. My wife acts the same way. She often disregards my reputation in public, so I simply don’t dare to take her out with me.”
Other businessmen chimed in with their own stories.
“Absolutely, my wife is more formidable than Miss Watson,” one added.

“I believe Miss Watson is sharp–tongued but tender–hearted. The deeper the love, the heavier the blows. It seems like Miss Watson is a bit tipsy, which is why she acted so excessively and spoke so harshly. You should go after her. Miss Watson is so beautiful. If she encounters someone with ill intentions later on, she could be in danger.”
Upon hearing this, clarity seemed to wash over Carter’s mind. He decided to let go of dwelling on the slap and took action. “I’m sorry for making you all witness this. I’ll be back shortly,” he excused himself.
“Go ahead, go ahead. It’s also fine if you don’t come back,” one of the businessmen quipped.
In their eyes, Julia was simply intoxicated while Carter would chase after her, and their dispute. would end up in bed together.
“That’s right! It’s fine if you don’t come back. With women, you have to conquer them with masculine energy. Once you conquer her, she won’t resist anymore.” The other businessman winked.
“Hahaha! Speaking from experience, are we? Mr. Ross, you might want to give it a shot,” the other one advised with a grin.
Buoyed by the playful remarks of the businessmen, a sense of curiosity began to stir in Carter’s mind. However, thoughts of Vivien intervened, reminding him of his commitment to her and the boundary he shouldn’t cross. Succumbing to temptation would not only validate Julia’s negative portrayal of him but also betray Vivien’s trust. Regardless, he couldn’t ignore the fact that Julia had clearly been under the influence of alcohol. He needed to catch up with her and assess the situation.
“Well, I’ll excuse myself for now,” Carter reiterated, reaffirming his intention to the group. With that, he wasted no time. Carter swiftly opened the door and hastened in the direction Julia had departed. After just a few strides, he spotted Julia propped against the wall, her hand tugging at her collar as she murmured, “It’s so hot.”
