Chapter 97: I Warned Her From The Beginning
Upon hearing Robert’s update, Mark’s expression grew noticeably more serious. Robert couldn’t help but wonder about the CEO’s increased involvement in this specific drug. Though Mark had previously invested in the development of rare disease drugs at Beyond Technologies, the level of dedication he was showing now seemed different.
Is it possible that the CEO has a different motive for using the special drug?
As Robert contemplated this, he noticed Mark’s phone ringing. The ringtone, though familiar, carried an unusual sense of urgency. Mark’s face shifted into a deep frown as he answered the call, his voice tense, “Mom… What’s going on?”
Witnessing Mark’s sudden change in demeanor, Robert’s concern deepened. He watched as Mark’s face turned pale, his eyes hardening with resolve.
“Ensure that they do whatever it takes to safeguard that child,” Mark commanded, his voice cold and commanding, his determination evident.
“I’ll head there immediately.”
With that, Mark hung up the phone and swiftly made his way out of the room, his expression grave.
As he left, he instructed Robert:
“Monitor the progress of the drug closely and involve me to address any issues that arise.”
Robert stood momentarily surprised before nodding in understanding, “Understood.”
Inside the gynecology director’s office at Hedwer van Duranstrom Advanced Private Hospital…
“Mr. Smith, although the child in Ms. Bleak’s womb has been preserved for the time being, the situation is still very precarious, with the risk of fetal arrest at any moment,” Dr. Chandler Martins, the head of obstetrics and gynecology responsible for Jennifer’s case, informed Mark with a serious expression.
Mark’s brow furrowed as a layer of frost seemed to spread across his face. “Can’t anything be done?” he asked, his voice low and steady, carrying an underlying tension that didn’t go unnoticed by Dr. Martins.
Dr. Martins coughed slightly, feeling a touch of awkwardness. He finally admitted, “To be honest, Mr. Smith, Ms. Bleak suffered an unfortunate fall that directly impacted her abdomen, It’s already something of a miracle that the fetus has survived until now. I’ve consulted some of my colleagues from my time studying in Madrid, and they couldn’t offer an immediate solution.”
Mark remained silent, avoiding eye contact. He was aware of Chandler’s expertise and reputation in the field of obstetrics and gynecology. The fact that Chandler could deliver such a blunt verdict suggested that something was seriously wrong with the child.
Is there really no hope?
He didn’t want to cause any trouble for Dr. Martins. Just as he was about to ask him to do everything possible to save the child, Chandler’s words abruptly shifted.
“However, there might be another avenue we could explore…”

Mark raised an eyebrow, his eyes keenly focused on Dr. Martins. “Go on.”
Dr. Martins hesitated briefly before retrieving his phone and showing Mark a video recording. “This video has been circulating online recently. It shows a traditional acupuncture medicine doctor successfully saving a pregnant woman’s life. The technique appears to be exceptional. Come take a look.”
Mark took a moment to watch the video, observing the skilled hand manipulating silver needles to target specific acupuncture points swiftly and accurately on a pregnant woman. As the video progresses, he saw the woman’s pale, pained face gradually ease and her distress diminishes.
After watching, Mark turned his gaze back to Dr. Martins, skepticism evident in his tone. “Do you think she can save Jennifer?”
Dr. Martins didn’t immediately respond, instead retrieving more information. “This particular pregnant woman was attended to by one of my senior colleagues at the city hospital. Considering the circumstances of the car accident and the pregnant woman’s condition, it was a dire situation. Several acupuncture practitioners were consulted, and it was through this woman’s intervention that successfully preserved and saved the fetus.”
Mark’s eyes flickered, processing the information. Dr. Martins explained further, “This is precisely the reason why the video of an acupuncture medicine practitioner saving the pregnant woman and her unborn child has gained so much attention on the internet. A significant number of the comments were coming from esteemed acupuncture medicine scholars from both domestic and international backgrounds. They all attested to the life–saving impact of these few needle insertions. Some even went as far as to suggest that their level of skill might not match this practitioner’s proficiency.”
Chandler’s implication was clear. If the comments from those scholars were accurate, it indicated a high likelihood that this individual possessed the capability to safeguard the child within Jennifer’s
womb.
“Do you happen to know who this doctor is?” Mark handed back the phone.
Dr. Martins shook his head. “No, Mr. Smith, I don’t recognize her either. However, the video captures a car accident scene from Venturo Street last week. You might be able to identify her, Mr. Smith.”
With Mark’s ability and vast connections, Chandler knew that as long as he set out to investigate, he would find out about this practitioner that can save his day.
Mark acknowledged this and nodded. “I’ll take care of it. Please focus on doing your best to preserve the child for now.”
Seeing that Mark spoke politely, and his tone was not that tough, Dr. Martins was somewhat flattered and immediately nodded his head and assured, “Don’t worry, Mr. Smith, during this period of time, I will do my best.”
Exiting Dr. Martins‘ office, Mark headed toward Jennifer’s ward. Jennifer was currently under anesthesia, lying still on the bed, while Mark’s mother, Rebecca Check–Smith, sat nearby with a worried expression.
Upon seeing Mark enter, Rebecca immediately inquired, “Mark, what did the doctor say?”
Mark didn’t reply immediately; he merely glanced at Jennifer on the bed, his eyes cold and detached. After a pause, he finally spoke, “Mom, when Jennifer wakes up, tell her that her dreams of the entertainment industry, the Smith family’s support, all of it means nothing if she loses this child due

to her actions.”
Rebecca’s expression was stunned as she looked at her son in disbelief. She couldn’t believe that these words were coming from Mark’s mouth.
“Mark, how can you say something like this? It was an accident! Jennifer didn’t intend for any of this to happen. She’s in so much pain right now, and you can’t even offer her comfort. How can you be so heartless –?”
Mark’s impatience shone through his eyes, cutting off Rebecca’s reproach. “Do you think I provided her all those resources for nothing? If she’s so incapable of even protecting this child, if her so–called dreams lead to harming the child, then what use is she to me?”
“You…”
“I warned her from the beginning!”
Mark’s gaze turned stern, devoid of any emotion beyond disgust, leaving Rebecca to realize that her son had no attachment or compassion left for Jennifer.
