Chapter 96: I Should Have Killed Her As Soon As She Was Born
“Dad, what do you think we should do now? Our family has been facing such bad luck lately. The project issue hasn’t been resolved, and there are so many other problems on top of that,” Jackson inquired with a sigh.
Speaking of this, Sean’s expression darkened as he replied, “Given the current situation, even if those old cronies did meddle, there’s nothing much that we can do about it. For now, we need to inject funds into the project as soon as possible to ensure it proceeds smoothly. Once this project succeeds, those old folks won’t have any grounds to trouble us.”
Jackson clearly understood this point. “If it weren’t for Mae being so heartless, not even helping me as her own father, we wouldn’t be in this passive situation.”
Recalling the day when they were humiliatingly thrown out of the hospital room by Mae, Jackson’s resentment surged within him. “If I had known Mae would turn out to be so ungrateful, I should have killed her as soon as she was born.”
A dangerous glint flickered in Jackson’s eyes as he said this, indicating his genuine intent to harm Mae.
“Stop dwelling on that now. Focus on finding a solution,” Sean retorted with a cold snort, clearly irritated by Jackson’s fixation.
Seraphina Lee, who had been silent until now, finally spoke up. “Grandpa, Dad, with all due respect, and with the current situation of the Lee family, finding Mae isn’t feasible. She despises us deeply: why would she assist us willingly?”
The expressions on both father and son from the Ye family turned slightly sour upon hearing Seraphina’s words.
Seraphina continued, “We don’t necessarily need Mae’s help. We could attempt to secure investment from someone else.”
The old man let out a disdainful snort, “If we can find another source of investment, do we really need to beg that useless Mae Lee?”
“Grandpa, please calm down and hear me out, would you?” Seraphina requested. As soon as she sensed that the patriarch was allowing her to continue, she then spoke.
“I heard from a friend at the court that they’re handling Mae Lee and Mr. Mark Smith’s divorce case. It seems Mae is trying to swindle money out of Mr. Smith and is filing for divorce, but he’s unwilling.
so she’s taken it to court.”
Seraphina’s revelation piqued the interest of the Ye family members. No one would think that the person who filed a lawsuit to the court was Mae Lee, and Mark Smith was the one who was unwilling to get a divorce.
Seraphina carried on, “If we approach Mr. Smith and inform him of how Mae treated her own grandfather and father that day in the hospital room, do you think he’d develop an even greater aversion to her?”
“At that point, we can hint that he could help the Lee Family. Even if he does it just to spite Mae, he might step in to assist us. Think about this, everyone: once Mr. Smith gets involved, the Lee Family won’t have any trouble extricating itself from this crisis.”
Seraphina’s words sparked contemplation among the members of the Lee Family. A few moments later, Sean voiced his thoughts, “Is that feasible? When I called him before, he barely exchanged a few words with me before hanging up the phone.”
Sean’s lingering dissatisfaction was evident as he spoke. Despite the Lee family’s lesser status compared to the Smith family, Mark was still his junior and his grandson–in–law no matter what, and it was disrespectful for him to be treated this way.
“Grandpa, it’s different now. Clearly, Mae has provoked Mr. Smith to the point where he’s pursuing a divorce. It’s the right time to approach him for help,” Seraphina reasoned.
Nolan Benson, who had remained quiet, finally added her input, “Seraphina has a point. Let her give it a try. After all, she’s a member of the Lee family, and she should contribute to our family’s cause. Besides, she and Mr. Smith are both young; they might find common ground to discuss.”
Nolan’s words held a deeper meaning, which Sean and Jackson seemed to understand. They both turned their gaze towards Seraphina, seemingly analyzing something.
Seraphina met her mother’s gaze and, with her typical appearance of a charming young woman, exuded an air of fragility that would invoke the protective instincts of most men.
Her long black hair cascaded down, framing her pure white wool pullover. Her modest skirt complemented her outfit, revealing a graceful neck and a slight smile that unveiled a subtle dimple. She appeared as a perfect picture of innocence.
Her appearance alone might not compare to Mae’s stunning allure, which could leave anyone captivated at first sight. Nonetheless, if observed separately, Seraphina was undeniably captivating.
Both Sean and Jackson exchanged a look, seemingly sharing a mutual understanding.
Jackson cleared his throat and spoke, “Seraphina, your intention warms my heart. We’ll entrust this matter to you.”
Pausing for a moment, he added, “If you manage to get Mark to intervene and help the Lee Family, once this difficult time is over, I’ll offer you a share of the Lee Family’s stocks.”
The news brightened the eyes of both Nolan and Seraphina. Though they attempted to hide their excitement, their words reflected their gratitude and commitment to the family’s cause.
“Thank you, Dad. I only wish to contribute to our family’s well–being. The shares are of no concern to me,” Seraphina humbly responded.
“Good girl,” Jackson said, seemingly moved, as he patted Seraphina’s shoulder, offering his support.
Mark’s mood had remained unpleasant ever since Mae filed for divorce in court and resisted any attempts at reconciliation. He listened to Jason’s advice, refraining from actively seeking out Mae or dwelling on thoughts related to her. He hoped that as time passed, he would gradually adapt and determine whether he can’t let go of Mae, or he just doesn’t like the fact that Mae suddenly doesn’t love him anymore.
Yet, despite half a month passing by, Mark’s mood had not improved. During late nights, his mind couldn’t help but wander back to thoughts of Mae. This unsettling feeling of anxiety and discomfort continued to plague him.
“Mr. Smith?” Robert’s concerned voice broke through Mark’s reverie. He wasn’t sure if Mark had been

paying attention to their conversation.
Mark refocused his attention, his brows furrowing as he responded, “Go on.”
Robert nodded and proceeded, “The second–phase clinical trial for the new special–effect drug by Beyond Technologies is progressing smoothly. Barring any unexpected setbacks, it’s poised to transition into the third phase soon.”
