Chapter 98: Why Should I Care About Her
Rebecca tried to calculate that if Jennifer spent more time with Mark, she might eventually fall in love with him. With Rebecca’s manipulation and Mark’s approval, Jennifer could eventually become a part of the Smith family. But in light of recent events, she was uncertain about her plan’s success.
She gazed at Mark, wanting to say something in Jennifer’s defense, but Mark had already left the hospital room.
‘Mark!”
Rebecca hurriedly opened the door and called after him, hoping to explain that the incident had been an accident.” What happened at that time was really an accident. I was there at the scene, I’ve seen it myself. It was a mishap during the filming. Jennifer fell due to filming location issues. Please don’t blame Jennifer for this…”
Mark’s voice cut through her words, “I don’t want to hear excuses. I only want results.”
The emotionless tone struck Rebecca like a blow, leaving her heart aching. She had always known that her son was naturally cold–blooded and wouldn’t empathize and that he had never even been connected to her as his own mother, but she had never imagined that he could be so heartless.
“You… You really don’t care about Jennifer at all, do you?” Rebecca’s words carried a hint of disbelief, her eyes pleading for some compassion from Mark.
“What is she to me? Why should I care about her?” Mark’s cold response hit Rebecca like a slap. His words made it clear that his feelings toward Jennifer had reached a point of indifference, and Rebecca realized that pushing him further on this matter could lead to their relationship deteriorating even more.
Mark’s parting words left her shaken, questioning her previous assumptions about Mark’s feelings toward Jennifer. She sat in silence, grappling with the realization that her hopes for Jennifer might have been misguided.
Mark replied in a strong voice, and seeing his mother’s outraged expression, he added, “Mom, don’t indulge in wishful thinking on me.”
With these words, he’d spoken enough to make it plain that Rebecca wasn’t stupid, so how could she not hear it?
Of course, she heard her son’s steadfast warning and distaste in his tone, and she didn’t dare to take in anything else.
She was terrified that if she involved him with Jennifer again, he might not recognize her as his mother.
“Okay, okay, I didn’t say anything. I’m just heartbroken that Jennifer has turned out this way.” Mark didn’t say anything in response to Rebecca’s nonsense and then departed.
After exiting the hospital, Mark instantly broadcasted a message to Robert, “Send someone to look into the acupuncture doctor’s identity and bring them to me as soon as you found who they are.
Two days later, Robert entered Mark’s office, bearing news about the person Mark had been looking for.

Mr. Smith, the person you’re looking for has been located.”
However, Robert’s demeanor seemed strange, and although Mark noticed, he didn’t immediately react to it. “Where is this person?”
Robert hesitated, and Mark picked up on his hesitation, prompting him to ask, “Is this person refusing to meet me?”
Robert’s answer, however, came as a surprise. “Mr. Smith, you might need to meet this personally.”
person
Mark frowned, not expecting such an audacious response from the person he was searching for. “They’re unwilling to come to see me?”
The implications of this situation struck Mark, and he was mildly irritated by the idea that someone was mimicking Mae’s audacious behavior. He instructed, “Tell this person that if they can cure the person that I want to help, I’m willing to pay any amount up top.”
Robert’s expression turned even more peculiar, a reaction that Mark didn’t catch at the time.
“Mr. Smith, it’s not money that she is after.”
Curiosity piqued, Mark looked at Robert, prompting him to continue, “This person might require your personal involvement.”
Mark raised an eyebrow, his focus on Robert as he stammered, “Mr. Smith, this person… may be someone you know.”
As Robert revealed who this person was, Mark’s hand movements abruptly halted. The papers he held were swiftly extracted, rearranged, and placed on top. These were traffic police road surveillance images, precisely capturing Mae’s face.
No wonder Robert had insisted on handling Mae himself, citing her irritable demeanor. The idea of her meeting with Mark was utterly inconceivable.
Just…
How could Mae…
Mark suppressed the fleeting doubt that flickered through his mind. He raised his gaze to meet Robert’s eyes and inquired, “Are you certain it’s Mae?”
In reality, Mark acknowledged the redundancy of his question. Robert had been his shadow for nearly a decade, and he wouldn’t present results without irrefutable evidence.
So… Mae not only possessed knowledge of acupuncture but also excelled at it. Her medical prowess was exceptional, a hidden skill she had concealed all along.
He was now eager to confront her about the secrets she still held. “Yes, indeed, sir.”
The revelation that the current internet sensation, a miracle–working doctor, was their CEO’s wife had sent shockwaves. The discovery had left Robert stunned, prompting repeated confirmation calls before he was convinced of the truth. The CEO’s wife possessed a plethora of hidden talents even his close associate was unaware of.
Impressive!
Not only could she pioneer Western medicine, but also master acupuncture to treat illnesses. Her medical proficiency surpassed that of most domestic acupuncture professors. Moreover, her IT
skills were considerable. It was her intervention that saved Gray Corporation’s project from sinking into deep waters.
Leaving the CEO’s side, she was making waves on her own. A significant splash indeed!
Robert couldn’t help but inwardly marvel, casting a discreet glance at his superior. He pondered whether the CEO regretted not acknowledging his wife’s potential earlier, now that such a valuable asset had slipped through his fingers.
“Understood, I’ll track down Mae.”
Mae was aware of Jennifer’s unfortunate fall from the high platform on the film set, or Auntie Melissa had caught wind of it through entertainment news while watching TV the previous day.
The on–site camera had captured Jennifer’s stomach–down tumble from the elevated platform, a rather impactful fall. Witnessing the scene, Mae couldn’t help but be taken aback. It was evident that such a fall would make it incredibly difficult to protect the baby.
Even though Mae and Jennifer didn’t share a close relationship, the unborn child was innocent and pitiable.
However, after the initial shock, Mae didn’t dwell on the matter much. She recognized her status as an outsider, and there was little for her to do aside from sighing.
Little did she anticipate that, while leaving Beyond Technologies today, she would unexpectedly encounter Mark, whom she hadn’t seen in a while. Since the incident where she had accompanied him to the hospital, their paths had not crossed.
Mae had presumed that unless it was for court appearances, her interactions with Mark were bound to be minimal. But fate had other plans, causing their paths to cross here.
With just a single glance exchanged, Mae averted her eyes and headed toward her parked car. A few days ago, she purchased the vehicle to make her travels more convenient.
However, just as she took a couple of steps, Mark intercepted her progress. “Mae,” he called out.
Halting, Mae looked at him and replied, “Mr. Smith.”
His consistently icy and distant tone led Mark to involuntarily furrow his brows. Nevertheless, he set
aside
any inclination to argue with her at this moment. Instead, he said, “Could we talk?”
“Is this about the divorce?” Mae inquired.
Mark’s expression turned resolute, although he retained his patience as he answered, “It’s about something else.”
