Chapter 33: Backing Up His Ex–Wife
Rumors about Mr. Smith and Jennifer had been circulating, leading people to believe that he cared deeply for her. But looking at the current situation, Mark’s attitude towards Jennifer wasn’t even as good as his attitude towards his ex–wife, Mae.
The crowd’s gaze towards Jennifer gained a slightly perplexing hint of sympathy, making her feel awkward and embarrassed.
She awkwardly curved her lips and said, “Since we’re all here, and I didn’t have any scheduled meetings this morning, can’t we just have a cup of coffee?”
Her tone was playful, and her choice of words intentionally conveyed a sense of familiarity, hoping to alleviate her previous awkwardness. Yet, unfortunately, Mark didn’t cooperate with her intentions.
“If you’re so concerned about this child, stay at home if you’re free. If something happens to the child…”
Mark didn’t finish the sentence, but his gaze turned noticeably colder as he looked at Jennifer. “You should be able to guess the consequences.”
The smile on Jennifer’s face froze completely. She hadn’t expected that her effort to ease the awkwardness would be met with such cold refusal from Mark, let alone the chilling remark he had made. Her heart trembled involuntarily.
Of course, she knew how much he valued this child. She understood that if she lost this child, her situation in front of him would change dramatically.
Her status as a top–tier actress in the entertainment industry, with access to top resources, all came from Mark’s support. It was also because of this child that she still had the privilege to negotiate with him.
Otherwise, with how much Mark valued the child, she would have to stay at home and focus on pregnancy, without enjoying the treatment of being the top actress in the industry.
“Mark, I know you care about this child. Why are you so serious? The child is in my womb, and I’m well aware of it.”
Jennifer tried to steer the conversation back with a smile. By saying this, even if Mark’s attitude. towards her wasn’t good, people could interpret it as him being overly concerned about the child in her belly.
Mark didn’t respond to her words. He coldly withdrew his gaze, turned to Mr, Sands, and said, “Inform the entertainment media. If they continue spreading rumors, they should prepare to find new jobs in advance.”
Implicitly, he was warning them that if they dared to create more rumors about him and Jennifer’s new affair, they would face closure and unemployment.
“Understood, Sir. I’ll take care of it immediately.”
Robert acknowledged and thought Mr. Smith was about to head upstairs. However, he saw him suddenly look in the direction of the front desk.
The few junior staff members at the front desk, who thought they had narrowly escaped trouble felt a sudden jolt in their hearts, sensing that something was not right.
As expected, in the next moment, Mr. Smith spoke, “Have the HR department recruit a few front desk personnel with professional standards. These few can leave.”
Although he was addressing Robert, his sharp gaze was fixed on the junior staff members. Thinking of how Mae had left without looking back, his eyes turned colder.
The junior staff members couldn’t even meet his eyes; they kept their heads down. Now that they heard his words, they couldn’t believe their ears, and hesitantly looked up at him.
Originally, they thought at most they’d receive a scolding from the CEO. After all, Mae was just the ex–wife of Mr Smith. How much could Mr. Smith care about an ex–wife who had divorced him?
Moreover, they had just heard Mr. Smith and Jennifer personally admit the existence of that child. Since she was carrying Mr. Smith’s child, he was even less likely to care about Mae.
Who could have imagined that Mr. Smith would actually fire them just for blocking Ms. Lee. downstairs?
