Chapter 32: After Four Years, the Temper Has Certainly Heated Up
He loosened his grip on Mae’s hand somewhat instinctively.
“Mae, how could you hit him?”
Jennifer intentionally raised her voice, attracting even more attention from the gathered crowd.
With an annoyed gaze, she looked at Mae, her tone carrying a heavy reproach. Then, she turned to Mark, and her earlier reprimand transformed into concern.
“Mark, are you okay?”
She attempted to reach out and touch the injured corner of Mark’s mouth, but he quickly dodged her touch. The look in his eyes as he gazed at her held an ambiguous warning.
Mae, retracting her hand in response, massaged her wrist that had been painfully pulled by Mark. She paid no attention to Jennifer, instead fixing her gaze on Mark and coldly remarking, “I don’t have the interest or patience to joke around with Mr. Smith.”
Mark raised his fingertip, gently wiping away the blood from the corner of his mouth. The faint metallic taste filled his mouth, and looking at Mae’s face, he found it so exasperating that it nearly made him laugh.
This damn woman, she really threw that punch.
“After four years, your temper has certainly heated up.”
Mae hadn’t expected that after taking such a punch, Mark wouldn’t get angry. She couldn’t help but be stunned.
On the other hand, Jennifer, who was once again ignored, was secretly delighted. She had assumed that Mark would definitely explode in anger and give Mae a good scolding, perhaps even making her embarrassed and leaving the Smith family in a pitiful state. However, not only did Mark not retaliate, but he also didn’t even show any sign of irritation.
Jennifer’s heart sank. The sense of crisis that had been pressing on her for these four years was intensifying at this moment.
Fingertips pressed into her palm, trying to suppress the jealousy that couldn’t be contained, she softly addressed Mark, “Mark, I came to find you because of the trending topic on Facebook. I’m worried about the child in my belly…”
As she spoke about the child, Jennifer lowered her voice, but intentionally glanced at Mae.
Beside them, Robert felt like Jennifer was intentionally inserting herself into the conversation at this crucial moment. However, he also knew how much importance his boss attached to the child in Jennifer’s womb. After hearing her out, he immediately stepped forward, opened Facebook, and showed Mr, Smith the trending topic.
On Facebook, discussions about Jennifer’s pregnancy and speculations about the father of her child were everywhere. The more Mark looked, the more coldness filled his eyes.
“Remove this tag!”
Mark ordered coldly.
In the next second, he seemed to realize something. His gaze unconsciously shifted towards Mae,
but by that time, Mae had already vanished from where she stood. His heart tightened for a moment. He looked towards the entrance of the building where Mae’s slender figure had just disappeared, just like last night, she never turned back.
Staring at the entrance for a while longer, he finally withdrew his gaze, concealing the fleeting trace of disappointment that had escaped his eyes. He turned and began walking back.
Seeing Mae leave, Jennifer’s suspended anxiety finally eased, and she breathed a barely noticeable sigh of relief. The smile on her face became more sincere. When she noticed that Mark was also leaving, she quickly caught up.
“Mark, is your face injury okay?” She inquired, but her tone carried a trace of dissatisfaction as she pouted slightly, reprimanding, “Mae really is something else. Why can’t things be discussed properly? How can you just act recklessly…”
“Do you have something else to do?” Mark’s impatience cut off Jennifer’s sentence.
The evident annoyance wasn’t only felt by Jennifer but also by the onlookers, causing a few surprised expressions to appear on their faces.
