When I got to the hospital, I was taken for a gynecological check–up while Neil waited outside.
I gave the doctor a brief rundown of my situation, followed by a series of tests. The results didn’t seem optimistic The doc suggested I stay in the hospital for a bit, which seriously bummed me out. I felt like a deflated balloon.
“The man outside, is he your husband? Should we fill him in on your situation? You’ll need someone to take care of you, the doctor asked.
“No, he’s just a friend. If I need his help, I’ll let him know Thanks.” I replied wearily
After I was transferred to the ward, Neil came to my bedside and asked. “What’s up? The doc wouldn’t tell me anything.”
I requested the doctor to keep it confidential, so she wouldn’t inform Neil Patient privacy was respected in such cases.
Looking at Neil’s worried face, I knew he genuinely cared for me. He had left Bonnie behind to rush me to the hospital. This wasn’t some figment of my imagination. I was debating whether I should tell him the truth, give him a chance to decide.
If I could successfully deliver the baby, I wouldn’t shoo him away from visiting.
“Neil, I was about to say when Neil’s phone rang
He glanced at the caller ID and picked up. After a few words, I got the gist of the conversation. It must be Kate on the other end.
“How did it get so serious?”
“I’m on my way.”
“Alright, got it.”
I was hesitant a moment ago, but now I was determined. Neil had only sent me to the hospital out of conscience, so how could I be swayed so easily?
Thank God I held my tongue, if not, I would’ve been accused of taking advantage of him.
Neil hung up the phone and looked at me hesitantly I smiled and said, “Go, you’ve done enough by bringing me here.”
“She sprained her ankle pretty badly. I’ll go check on her,” Neil seemed to be explaining to me.
“No need for explanations, you’re a free man” I maintained a calm smile, trying to sound indifferent.
Even though I was distraught and anxious, I didn’t want to show it. The child in my belly wasn’t just mine, but if I wanted to bring him into the world, I had to bear this burden alone

At night, while scrolling through my phone in bed, I saw a post by Bonnie. It was from five hours ago, probably around the time when Neil was taking me to the hospital. A picture of an injured ankle and a brief caption, “What hurts more than a sprained ankle is a broken heart.”
She must be upset thinking that the man she deeply loved chose to bring his unwell ex–wife to the hospital while she was injured. It must be heart–wrenching.
Well, she had it coming. I had endured countless painful moments of being abandoned, with Neil always choosing her over me.
Before I was diagnosed with breast cancer in my past life, I had already felt unwell. Once, I was in so much chest pain that I was sweating bullets and hoped Neil would accompany me to the hospital. But then Bonnie called, saying she was pregnant, and Neil rushed over to her immediately.
When I passed away, it was the happiest time of their lives. Bonnie was accepted by the Whitmore family, pregnant with their grandchild, and Neil also gained their approval. They even opened a grand hotel.
I never imagined I would get a chance to upset Bonnie. On impulse, I liked Bonnie’s post. I was not sure if it was because I liked her post, but Bonnie deleted it the next day.
“Rena, what happened? Why’re you suddenly in the gynecology ward?” Orlando came to visit and asked, looking surprised.
I sighed helplessly, “Health issues, mainly gynecological. The doc said if I don’t get treated, it might affect future pregnancies. Scared me into staying
here”
I didn’t want to tell anyone in my family about the pregnancy.
Orlando sighed deeply. “It’s all Neil’s fault you’re like this. I remember you being very healthy and robust as a child, not this frail”
“That’s all in the past. I can only blame myself for being too sentimental back then.” I managed a bitter smile.
“At least you guys didn’t have kids. This way, you can have a clean and straightforward divorce without too much entanglement. Otherwise, it would have been messier and the child would have been affected” Orlando opened the thermos he brought with him. Inside was some soup. He said, “Have some, it’s made by your sister–in–law”
I carefully sat up and started sipping the soup straight from the thermos.
Orlando’s words weighed on my mind. Was I making a mistake by stubbornly wanting to give birth to the child?
A child needed not only material support but also paternal love, which was something I cannot provide. And if the Whitmore family found out about the child, will I be able to keep them at bay? Even if Bonnie later had the Whitmore’s child, there was no guarantee that they won’t neglect mine.
Lost in thought, I heard footsteps from the entrance. Neil walked in. I was taken aback. “Why are you here?”
“Who were you expecting?“Neil seemed somewhat displeased with my questioning, his expression growing stern. “Simmons?”

I wasn’t waiting for him. I’d rather hire a nurse than ask Simmons to take care of me. I was not that shameless. Carrying Neil’s child, asking Simmons to look after me? I wouldn’t dare exploit Simmons‘ feelings for me.

“You enjoy mocking her?” Neil wasn’t angry, he just sat down on a chair nearby, looking at me with a teasing smile, “Why don’t you play nice like before, be the caring sister in front of her?”
“So, now that the cat’s out of the bag, why bother hiding anything?” I looked at Neil with a cold stare.
“So, you told people that it was her who triggered our divorce?” Neil asked again.
I dramatically replied, “Yes, I spilled the beans. I knew my colleagues would come knocking, so I called Bonnie out loud and clear for wrecking my marriage. I wanted to make her feel like dirt. Happy now?”
Neil gave a nod, I’m satisfied.”
“Then why don’t you go and comfort Bonnie, tell her you’ve come to her rescue. Stop cramping my style, I need some rest, keeping my spirits up is crucial” I wasn’t lying. My doctor also told me not to get overly emotional
“How long are you gonna be stuck in the hospital? What’s the issue?” Neil ignored my sarcasm and asked seriously.
“Obviously, it’s all about the big issue of me and my future partner having kids. I need to rest up and get ready for a new married life.” I replied coldly.
