Suppressing her discomfort, she said softly, “Celeste is my invited guest. Her presence is out of respect to me. If anything has upset anyone, I apologize on behalf of all of us. Today is my birthday, and I hope everyone can be happy”
The crowd finally shut up
Celeste glanced at Clair. Her words were clever, not apologizing for Celeste but mentioning her name. Suddenly, Celeste was the center of attention.
However, since Clair had been so straightforward, to argue would seem petty Celeste didn’t say anything more.
Molly was the only one who had a grim expression, and she was staring at Celeste.
At eight o’clock sharp, Clair’s birthday party officially started. Dressed at her finest, she took the stage to give a speech.
Celeste stood at a distance, nursing a glass of wine.
Liam Reed was engaged in conversation with a group of men and couldn’t get away. Trisha Colton, fearing Celeste would be at a disadvantage, left Nicolas Francis to find Celeste.
“Celeste, that guy didn’t bully you, did he?”
Celeste laughed, “Am I that easy to bully in your eyes? As if anyone could take a shot at me?”
“I was just worried about you. You were surrounded by them, and I wanted to come over, but Nicolas wouldn’t let me. I was really worried.”
Celeste paused, then broke into a smile.
She was worried before that Nicolas was a flake, afraid that Trisha would get hurt by him. She didn’t believe Liam when he said she was overthinking Now, she thought Nicolas was a reliable guy after all
In that situation, Trisha’s blunt nature would definitely land her in hot water. Nicolas not letting her come was purely to protect her.
“What are you smiling at?”
“Nothing. Celeste said in a low voice, “You got one thing right.”
“What?”
“Clair does have it in for me.”
Trisha got excited immediately. “Seel I told you! She’s been enjoying everything that should’ve been yours for twenty years. Now that you’re back and might take all that away, how could she not hate you?”
Celeste chuckled and said, “You see, I did save her life once. She wouldn’t repay kindness with resentment, would she?”
Trisha retorted, “Aunt Caitlyn once supported Helen too, and look how Helen turned out? People’s greed is unpredictable. A small act of kindness or resentment can spark a huge conflict. That’s spot on ”
As they were talking, a group of waiters pushed out a gigantic cake.
The cake was a near–perfect replica of a Disney castle, intricately made.
The arrival of the cake instantly stirred up a little commotion at the venue.
For the most part, girls can’t resist such things and flocked forward to snap some pictures.
Trisha exclaimed. “This cake must have cost a fortune, right?”
