The young lady laughed heartily, “Oh, feeling all high and mighty after performing a play? Not taking on gigs that don’t pay now?”
Celeste Campbell also chuckled, “In this day and age, expecting something for nothing and doing it so shamelessly, now that’s new. Miss, is your family so hard up that you can’t afford a single ticket? Always wanting others to put on a free show? Is your family going bankrupt?”
The young lady’s family had indeed been facing some issues recently. Regardless of whether Celeste’s words were intentional or not, they were sharp and cutting, making the lady’s face fall instantly
Clair Garcia smoothly stepped in, “Celeste, she was just being frank. No harm meant.”
Celeste smiled, “So, I was just joking too. Why is nobody laughing?”
The crowd was speechless
Molly Fletcher shot Celeste a glance and said, “A real joke is one that both parties find funny. If the other party doesn’t find it hilarious, it’s plain rudeness” Celeste turned to Molly, the heiress that she had previously scared with a rat, Miss Fletcher, being the etiquette guru that you are, why didn’t I see you stepping in when I was being professionally belittled?”
Molly’s face darkened at the sight of her radiant beauty and remembering Steven Garcia entering arm–in–arm with her, “They were just joking around Can’t you even catch that?”
Celeste shot back, using her own words, “A real joke is one that both parties find funny. I didn’t find it hilarious.”
Her words subtly suggested who the real rude one was
Molly shot her a cold glance, “That just proves your narrow–mindedness and lack of tolerance.”
Celeste chuckled, “My tolerance may be lacking, but my courage is certainly leaps and bounds over Miss Fletcher’s. At least I wouldn’t burst into tears over a rat.”
Molly’s face turned sour, clearly remembering the prank at Lyman Rowley’s wedding where she was scared by Mason Fletcher’s girlfriend and threw a rat at the bride, causing her to fall and almost miscarry. The humiliation of being spanked by her grandfather in public was still fresh in her rhemory
Mentioning this incident brought back the shame, but how did Celeste know? She wasn’t there that day, was she?
Staring at Celeste, Molly suddenly found Celeste’s mocking gaze familiar. It reminded her of the heavily made–up woman who had pranked her. A chilling Suspicion crept into her mind.
“You’re Selena Colton, aren’t you?” she bit out
Celeste glanced at her nonchalantly, “I’m sorry, I have no idea what you’re talking about, Miss Fletcher”
But Molly was more convinced than ever. The thought of Celeste embarrassing her publicly and getting her punished by her grandfather made Molly want to strangle her right then and there.
Molly sneered and said. “Celeste, you’re truly shameless. You’re neither a Reed nor a Campbell. What gives you the right to be here?”
Celeste turned the conversation to the awkward and repeatedly peace–making Clair, “You should ask Miss Garcia that question. After all, she specifically had Steven invite me. Honestly, I didn’t really want to come.”
Clair was taken aback, not expecting Celeste to pass the buck to her.
Molly’s face darkened even more, her eyes accusing Clair.
Knowing Molly’s feelings for Steven, why would Clair have Steven invite Celeste?
Clair noticed Molly’s accusing gaze but felt helpless. She had invited Celeste because she was to return to the Garcia family, so she needed to show her respect and courtesy
But Celeste’s identity hadn’t been revealed yet, and her father and brother had repeatedly told her not to leak it. Under these circumstances, how could she reveal Celeste and Steven’s relationship?
