All these years, I have come to terms with the fact that it’s nothing I will ever experience again. Just hearing those words today that I might have that freedom back has awakened a hope I never thought I would
get.
Every night I sat on my porch and looked out on the forest with a longing to run in it. I took long walks through the forest in the beginning, just to see it. But it hurt too much, so I stopped walking and just sat on my porch with a cup of tea instead.
My eyes register the car turning on the road and taking another way. Looking around, I know this isn’t the right way to his flat and turn my head to look at his father, who is sitting beside me.
“This isn’t the way to his flat!” I say when he just keeps looking out the window.
“That’s correct,” he says when I see the car turn again and we drive closer to the outskirts of the city.
“I have to show you something,” he says when the car turns into another smaller road before it stops beside a stone wall.
Looking out the window. I have no idea where we are when his father opens the door on his side, and mine is opened as well. Turning my head, I look out and see one of his guards standing to the side and waiting for me to get out.
Climbing out of the car I look around, but don’t see what’s lying on the other side of the car when his father walks up beside me.
“Walk with me,” he says, placing his hand on my back before he starts to walk with us toward a gate further ahead.
“After Darian rejected you, he saw everything that your Beta did. He didn’t intervene, and he has been living with guilt and regret for what he did to you. Once we got everyone off our pack grounds, he took off looking for you. He wanted to get you back and have you in safety. I’m convinced he might even forcefully mark you to get you back, but all he found was a burned out car down a cliff.” He says when we stop by the gate and he places his hand on the door but doesn’t open it.

“He mourned you for ages, couldn’t come back to the pack house or live in the pack, so he took over this city and enlarged our pack grounds past this city. He tried the best to start over and run the pack from the city, but he never got over you and what he did,” he says, and I just know from what Darian told me that he took the city under his pack grounds a year after he rejected me.
By doing this, he has by far the largest pack on this side of the country, and I know it takes a lot more work to keep it all up and running. Most of the people living here are wolves, but there are humans as well. I can only imagine the amount of work he has to do to keep this city running along with his pack
I had no idea about the rest, he hasn’t told me any of it.
“I didn’t know,” I say when he opens the gate a little bit.
“You know he came here every day the first year, then he forced himself to only come once a week. But he never missed a single week to go here,” he says, pushing the gate open before he pulls me inside.
Looking around, I see we are at a cemetery, and I can’t understand what we are doing here when he pulls me down a line with gravestones until he stops by a tree that has a beautiful memorial stone sitting under it. There are some planted flowers beside it when his
father takes a step closer with me and my eyes fall on the name.
