Chapter 4 Mr. Patterson Married a Shrew
As soon as Brenda stepped into the bedroom, her grandpa, Merlin Cohen, gave her a ring.
“Brenda, you’ve been gone for so long. Miss me yet? You’re going to City Hall with Lemuel tomorrow, right? Congratulations!”
Brenda missed her grandpa. His voice stirred up her emotions.
“Grandpa, I just wanna go home.”
“Why? What’s up? Are you unhappy? Did someone mess with you?”
Brenda vented her frustration.
“You know I don’t want to get hitched so soon! I’m only twenty, for crying out loud. Who gets married at such a young age? And I really can’t stand that jerk Lemuel!”
“Don’t be silly. I know that guy, and I like him. You haven’t given him a chance yet. Once you get to know him, you’ll warm up to him.”
“Grandpa, I really don’t like him! Why do you keep pushing me to marry him?”
now, just listen to me and try to get along with Lemuel.”
“Trust me, I won’t break my promise to you!”
This got Brenda all fired up and curious.
“Fine. I’ll do it. But just know that I plan on divorcing him after two years. You won’t be able to stop me then, and you can’t take back your promise!”
“Alright!”
After the chat with Merlin, Brenda felt much better.
She didn’t want to marry Lemuel, but if her grandpa kept his promise to her, it might be worth it!
Brenda felt relieved, but Lemuel was still fuming.
Lemuel sat in his study, feeling incredibly grumpy.
He wasn’t thrilled about being forced into marrying a young woman, but he was willing to do it for his grandpa’s sake.
All he wanted was to get through the next two years with her, but he didn’t expect her to be so uncivil!
She always spoke harshly and acted rudely!
She had only been in Nafeeza City for a few days and had already managed to get on his nerves multiple times! She even
Lemuel tried to reason with her, but she just insulted him!
She thought he was shameless and useless! How dare she!
If anyone else said such things about Lemuel, he would have given them a piece of his mind. But Brenda was the one his grandpa favored.
And to make matters worse, she was only twenty while Lemuel was already twenty–nine. It was beyond embarrassing for him to be insulted by a young woman like Brenda.
The thought of living with Brenda for the next two years was stressing him out even more.
Suddenly, Marvin, Lemuel’s assistant, sent a message.
[I’ve forwarded all the info about Ms. Cohen to your email, Mr. Patterson.]
Lemuel checked his email, then called Marvin.
“What happened before last year?”
According to the investigation, Brenda and her grandpa moved to Bridge Town a few years ago. They made a living by farming and helping out the villagers in recent years.
There was no information about what happened to her a year
ago.
Nothing about her birth, parents, or what she did before she turned 18!
Marvin replied, “I was surprised too. Lange checked her out, and this is all he could find.”
Lemuel was speechless.
Even someone like Lange, a top–notch hacker who could easily break into secret databases of other states, couldn’t find anything substantial about Brenda. She must have done a damn good job hiding her identity!
Regular folks didn’t usually have to hide their identity!
Who the hell was this girl?
Lemuel was slightly curious. He stayed silent for a while before saying,
“Alright. You can stop digging into her now.”
The he hung up the phone.
He didn’t like Brenda, so he wasn’t going to waste any more time on her.
He had a deal with his grandpa. He would marry Brenda and stay with her for two years. After that, he would divorce her immediately!
