Chapter 5 Brenda Is a Troublemaker
The next day, Brenda and Lemuel went to get their marriage
license.
Right before entering City Hall, Lemuel pulled out a document and handed it to Brenda.
“Take a look at this. If you’re cool with the terms, sign it. We’ll get the marriage license after you sign.”
Brenda glanced at it and saw the title: Marriage Agreement.
[The following terms are hereby agreed upon. The marriage shall have a duration of two years and shall remain confidential. Neither party shall interfere with the other party’s personal affairs.]
[During this period, the husband shall provide financial support to the wife, covering all reasonable expenses. The wife shall fulfill her role as a partner, pleasing the husband’s family and attending necessary events with the husband.]
[In the event of divorce after two years, no compensation shall be awarded to the wife.]
[Should the wife refuse to comply with the agreed upon divorce after the specified period, the husband reserves the right to take
necessary legal action, including the possibility of incarceration.]
Brenda frowned at the last term.
“Why do you have to include that against me? What if you don’t want to divorce at that time?”
Lemuel replied firmly,
“That’s not gonna happen.”
“Don’t be so certain. To make it fair, I’ll add a term against you. If you don’t want to divorce after two years, all your property will be mine!”
Lemuel stared at Brenda for a moment and thought, “That’s why she agreed to marry me. It’s all about the money!”
Nice try!
But Lemuel was still like, “Sure, why not?” He was convinced he could divorce her in two years.
Brenda kept reading the terms, and the very last one said:
[NO HANKY–PANKY THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE MARRIAGE!]
Those words were in all caps, which meant Lemuel wasn’t messing around.
At first, Brenda didn’t get it. “What do you mean?”
Lemuel explained, “We’re getting hitched for show, meaning it’s just for show. You gotta be careful not to catch feelings for me, and I ain’t gonna get intimate with you.”
Brenda understood now. She blushed a bit and rolled her eyes at Lemuel.
“Don’t worry. I won’t fall for you! You better have some self–control. If you try anything, I’ll kill you!”
Lemuel’s face turned dark. “Don’t worry, the last thing I want is to touch you!”
“You better keep your word!”
After signing the agreement, they went and got the marriage license without saying anything else.
After getting the license, Lemuel took Brenda back to the Patterson Manor as his grandpa had instructed.
Tyrone Patterson saw the license and grinned.
Tyrone really liked Brenda. He said to her with care,
“Now that you’re married, you’re part of the Patterson family. If
one gives you trouble, tell Lemuel and he’ll have your back!
Lemuel gives you a hard time, tell me, and I’ll be there for
enda was moved by his words.
She didn’t like Lemuel, but she really liked his grandpa.
“Okay. Thanks, Grandpa.”
“No need to thank me. We’re family.”
As Brenda went out to feed the fish, Lemuel couldn’t help but
ask his grandpa, “Can you tell me who she really is?”
Tyrone narrowed his eyes. “I thought you checked her background.”
Lemuel didn’t answer.
Tyrone smiled and looked at Brenda in the yard.
“She’s got some powerful protection.”
Lemuel became even more curious. “Who’s protecting her?”
Tyrone didn’t give him an answer. Lemuel pressed on, “Now that I’m her husband, you should tell me about her.”
Tyrone shook his head. “Sure, but only if you promise to stay married to Brenda for the rest of your life.”
Lemuel was speechless. He was curious about Brenda, but he wanted the divorce more.
That woman was nothing but trouble!
Tyrone continued, “It’s not the right time. You’ll find out when you start to care about her.”
Tyrone let out a deep sigh, his expression turning serious.
“She may seem happy all the time, but that’s because she’s been sheltered and kept in the dark. If she finds out what’s happened, she won’t be happy anymore. Brenda has been through a lot. Her life has been tougher than anyone you’ve ever known. Lemuel, please be good to her.”
Lemuel was taken aback. “She’s been through a lot? What doesn’t she know?”
Tyrone sighed and shook his head, indicating for him to drop the subject.
Lemuel didn’t know what to say.
