Chapter 2 Badmouth Mr. Patterson
“Help! Fire! Run!”
Chaos erupted in the coffee shop. People started freaking out, screaming and coughing, all scrambling to get out.
In the midst of the panic, Krista also ran towards the exit. Just as she reached the door, a woman grabbed her.
The woman was getting trampled by the crowd, her leg broken and unable to move. Desperately, she clung onto Krista like a lifeline.
“Please, miss, save my child. He’s still inside. Please help him! Please…”
Krista glared at the woman and shook herself free.
“It’s too dangerous in there. Are you trying to get me killed? Get lost!”
After scolding the woman in disgust, Krista walked away and called Lemuel to complain.
“Lemuel, please come and help me. I got hurt.”
The woman on the ground cried out in despair, while people discussed her situation.
“Yeah, I’m sure the kid won’t make it. What a pity.”
Many people surrounded the woman, preventing Brenda from going inside. She was about to leave, but frowned upon hearing the woman’s cry. So she pushed through the crowd and entered the coffee shop.”
Onlookers watched Brenda rush into the flames and sighed.
“Is that girl crazy?!”
“It’s hella risky. How the hell did she walk into a burning building without any fire–resistant gear?!”
“She must be batshit crazy!”
Just when everyone thought Brenda and the child were doomed, she burst out of the coffee shop with the child in her arms.
Her clothes had multiple holes, and her face was covered in a layer of dust, which gave her a comical appearance.
But the child in her arms was unharmed.
The woman clung tightly to the child and burst into tears once again. By the time she composed herself and wanted to express her gratitude, Brenda had already disappeared.
Brenda hailed a taxi and headed straight to the hospital.
Her back was injured. She had been so focused on protecting the child that she failed to notice a falling chandelier. It seemed like a serious injury on her back and the pain was unbearable.
Unable to assess the damage herself, she decided to seek medical attention at the hospital.
To her surprise; as soon as she arrived, she bumped into Lemuel
and Krista.
Krista had red, teary eyes, making her look vulnerable and endearing. Lemuel held her gently, as if cradling a baby, and kept comforting her.
Behind them stood a group of doctors in white coats, clearly important figures in the hospital.
People might mistake them for conducting business rather than visiting a doctor!
Brenda pouted, ignored her fiancé and Krista, and headed straight to the outpatient department.
The doctor was taken aback when he saw the wound on her
back.
“What happened, young lady? How did you get hurt?”
“It was an accident. Can you please just apply some ointment?”
The doctor assumed Brenda came from a modest background, given her simple attire.
“I’m afraid you’ll need surgery. You need a family member to sign this form. I’ll arrange the operation for you soon.”
“I’ll sign it myself.”
“No, it has to be signed by a family member.”
Brenda felt a bit distressed. Her grandfather wasn’t present, and
she couldn’t think of anyone else who could sign it for her.
“Just consider me an orphan.”
The doctor was surprised. “Do you have any other family
members?”
“I have a grandpa, but he’s not here.”
“Any other relatives or friends with you?”
“Well, I do have a fiancé.”
As Brenda spoke, she recalled what she had just witnessed. So she continued firmly,
“But he’s deceased. He was an unfaithful man who cheated on
me with a married woman. Her husband caught them in bed
and beat him to death.”
The doctor and nurses were astonished.
The doctor didn’t know how to respond, so he allowed Brenda to
sign the form herself.
Meanwhile, Lemuel learned that Brenda was also at the hospital and hurried to check on her.
“You got a patient named Brenda? What went down with her? How’d she get hurt? Is she okay?!”
