Chapter 1 Never Judge a Book by Its Cover
*In the Cafe*
Brenda Cohen was stirring the gross coffee, frowning when Krista babbled on and on about her love with Lemuel Patterson… like she was just trying to show off, but Brenda wasn’t truly interested in her words.
“Lemuel and I have known each other for ten freaking years, and no one can tear us apart. We’re madly in love…”
Brenda looked up, intrigued, and cut her off.
“Madly in love? You two? Then why hasn’t he put a ring on it?”
Krista Graves’s face turned beet red, and Brenda had just blown the lid off her plan!
She wanted to marry Lemuel, but Lemuel didn’t feel the same
way…
Krista was left speechless, and in a fit of rage, she whipped out her bank card and tossed it in front of Brenda.
“There’s a million bucks on that card. Take it and go back to wherever you came from! You don’t deserve Lemuel. Marrying a guy way above your league is not smart! I’m the only one good
Brenda leaned back in her chair, a mischievous grin on her face as she replied, “Sounds like a deal! You want him, and I don’t. How about we up the stakes? If you can convince Lemuel to call off our engagement, I’ll give you a cool hundred million!”
“What?”
Krista was stunned, then erupted in anger.
“Who the hell do you think you are, Brenda? Are you saying you were dragged into this engagement? Look at yourself! Why would Lemuel choose someone like you if you weren’t forcing him?”
“And do you have any clue what you can do with a hundred million dollars? How on earth are you gonna get that kind of money? Listen, I…”
Krista suddenly stopped, her words caught in her throat.
Brenda casually pulled out a card and plopped it on the table. It was a fancy Centurion Card, all gold–plated and shiny!
Krista recognized the card right away. No doubt about it, it belonged to Lemuel.
This infuriated Krista. Brenda hadn’t even married Lemuel yet, and she already had the Patterson family’s unlimited Centurion Card!
Jealousy burned in Krista’s eyes as she stood up and yelled, “You bitch! How dare you steal Lemuel’s credit card!”
Brenda felt offended. “Let’s keep things civil here. I’ll ask you one last time. Can you convince Lemuel to break off our engagement?”
Krista rolled her eyes in anger. Why did she even bother
coming here to talk to Brenda if she knew how it would go? She thought Brenda just wanted to humiliate her, not have an actual
conversation!
Krista exploded, “Quit acting, you bitch! You’re shameless enough to seduce my Lemuel. You’re nothing but a slut, a tramp!”
*Smack! Smack! Smack!*
Brenda was not one to silently endure everything. She got up and unleashed a flurry of slaps right across Krista’s face.
Before Krista could react, her face swelled up right away. Her mouth twisted a bit, making it painful to open. Swearing was out of the question now. All she could do was sit on the floor and sob.
Crying was off–limits because it hurt too much.
Brenda straightened herself up and spoke with a gloomy tone, “I told you to keep it civil, but you just had to ignore me, didn’t
you?”
“Let me make one thing clear. Lemuel may mean the world to you, but he’s nothing in my eyes! I’ll be grateful if you can get him to break up with me. But if you can’t, stay the hell away from me! Roger that?”
With that, Brenda snatched the Centurion Card and stormed
out.
Everyone in the coffee shop was left stunned!
Who would’ve thought that a seemingly petite and gentle girl like Brenda could be so aggressive?
Well, never judge a book by its cover.
Brenda walked out of the coffee shop with a pout on her face. She had hoped to use Krista to get rid of Lemuel. If she had known Krista wouldn’t be able to do it, she wouldn’t have wasted her time coming here!
“Boom!”
Suddenly, a loud bang echoed from the coffee shop, followed by
thick smoke!!!
