Glancing surreptitiously at Theodoric in the car, Ruthanne thought he looked very stylish holding the steering wheel with one hand.
However, she was not in the mood to savor it. As she was deliberating whether or not to explain the matter concerning Marianne’s bracelet, Theodoric spoke first. “Where were you this afternoon?”
Ruthanne widened her eyes in surprise.
Instead of asking about the theft, he’s asking me where I was this afternoon.
She turned to regard him. “I was giving out flyers,” she answered honestly.
“Flyers?” Silvius, seated in the back seat, was visibly surprised. “Who told you to?”
“I don’t know him. It was a bald guy with a big belly. He wore a black suit.”
There’s only one bald employee in all of Romanesque. It must be the head of the marketing department. Silvius was exasperated. “I must say, Ruthanne, you’re too naïve. Why would you do whatever he asked you to? You don’t report to him.”
That was easier said than done.
As she was an intern with no qualifications who was still on probation, every employee had the right to tell her what to do.
Ruthanne pursed her lips, not wanting to talk to Silvius any further.
Silvius and Theodoric are rich folks who will never understand the woes of the poor.
Soon after, they arrived at the office. Ruthanne returned to her workstation and continued to endure the disdainful eye–rolls of her coworkers.
“Everyone! The big boss went into Baldy’s office! D*mn, he’s p*ssed!” A coworker’s voice sounded, followed immediately by the rustle of a crowd gathering together.
“What’s going on? What did Baldy do?”
“Who knows!”
“Shh! Hush now. Listen!”
Baldy’s office was across the walkway from the cubicles. One only needed to look up to see everything.
At that moment, however, the blinds were drawn shut. The crowd held their breath, straining to hear the commotion within.
Ruthanne was not interested in office gossip, so she kept her head bowed and her mind on her work.
However, the excitement in the office was so overwhelming that she found it difficult to ignore.
“Who
gave you the authority to order my people around?”
It was Theodoric’s voice.

The crisp, unmistakable crash of something being flung to the floor rang out in between.
“I–I did no such thing, Mr. Lasker!”
“Weren’t you the one who had Ruthanne give out flyers?”
“I–I didn’t know that Ruthanne was one of yours, Mr. Laskér! I thought she was just an intern who-”

“Go to the finance department and pick up your last paycheck. I don’t want to see you here ever again.”
“Have mercy, Mr. Lasker! I have a family to feed…”
Ruthanne froze.
Did Theodoric just stand up for me?
In utter disbelief, she gazed in the direction of the office and found her colleagues, who were eavesdropping on the conversation, giving her similarly puzzled looks.
Uh… Could they have misunderstood?
Bang!
The office door suddenly flung open, and a frigid gust of wind poured forth.
The crowd shuddered and felt a chill crawling down their spines. They slunk back to their desks with their heads hung low. Not one of them dared to look up.
The office was so silent that it felt disquieting. Ruthanne met Theodoric’s gaze.
She flushed. Aside from the embarrassment, she was also perplexed.
The man’s sharp gaze swept past Ruthanne before landing on the others. His icy voice was laced with cruelty as he said, “If I ever catch anybody taking advantage of the intern, they’ll end up worse than him.”
Theodoric’s aura was so terrifying that nobody dared make a sound.
However, all of them knew that Ruthanne was the intern he was referring to.
Ruthanne was bewildered. She could not understand him at all.
He didn’t ask about Marianne’s false accusations of me being a thief, yet he’s standing up for me for giving out flyers. What kind of a guy is he?
Having no answer to that question, Ruthanne shook her head and got back to work.
Unexpectedly, his voice sounded again. “Come with me, Ruthanne.”
The atmosphere was dense with anticipation. Some of her coworkers exchanged surreptitious glances, and Ruthanne noticed that.
She swallowed a lump in her throat and answered clumsily, “Oh, all right.”
