Feeling too self–conscious to walk alongside Theodoric, she dawdled at her workstation for a long time before heading to his office.
Theodoric took his seat before his desk. He held his tablet in one hand, his slender fingers sliding across the screen.
Leaning back on the couch, Silvius looked back and forth between the both of them meaningfully. It made Ruthanne uncomfortable.
As Theodoric was deeply engrossed in perusing his tablet, Ruthanne did not dare disturb him.
She merely stood quietly before him like a guilty child.
The couple’s silence made Silvius anxious.
It’s one thing for Theodoric to be too proud, but how is Ruthanne that dense? I seem to have wasted my breath yesterday!
Unable to bear it any longer, Silvius started playfully, “Mr. Lasker stood up for you today, Ruthanne. Shouldn’t you thank him?”
Ruthanne’s eyes widened. Although she did not know why Theodoric would do that for her, she thought she should thank him at the very least.
“Thank you, Mr. Lasker,” she said earnestly while blushing.
“Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t do it for you,” came Theodoric’s bland reply as soon as Ruthanne spoke.
Ruthanne froze upon having her gratitude rejected. Silvius, however, was exasperated by his friend’s forked tongue.
“I just can’t stand the company culture of bullying, that’s all. Nobody would be getting any work done if all they did was pick on the interns.”
“I seem to recall that it’s standard practice for veteran employees to bully the interns, which happens every year,” Silvius said pointedly. “How come you’ve never spoken up before?”
Theodoric’s hand hovering over the tablet froze. The rage emitting from his glare seemed capable of burning his friend to a crisp. “You have much to say today.”
Silvius laughed gleefully.
Very well. It seems that my old friend is living up to his reputation of being so stubborn that he speaks without regard for the consequences. It’s impossible to get him to say what he feels.
Strangely, Silvius had the sudden and distinct impression that his presence in the room was unwanted.
It seems more glaring than usual in here today. Oh, I get it. I’m the third wheel. Fine, then. Since Ruthanne began working here, I seem to have become the most intrusive person in the building.
Silvius clapped his hands and headed tactfully toward the door. “Fine. I’ll leave. You happy now?”
Suddenly, Theodoric and Ruthanne were the only ones left in the vast office.

She did not understand why he summoned her there yet would not say a thing and instead opted to stare at his tablet.
There is a certain gap between employer and employee, after all. Furthermore, my relationship with him is complicated.
She said softly, “If there’s nothing else, I’ll be heading back to work, Mr. Lasker.”
“Hang on.” Theodoric pushed the tablet to Ruthanne. I’m buying you a piece of jewelry. Take your pick.”
Ruthanne was flabbergasted.
Jewelry? What’s gotten into him? Why would he buy me gifts out of the blue?
Theodoric’s sudden gesture made Ruthanne nervous. She gazed at him in disbelief, unable to discern a clue from his emotions.
All she saw were his chiseled features and inscrutable, narrow eyes.
“Why would you buy me a gift?”
Theodoric’s gaze flickered toward the tablet before him. “Have a look.”
In response to those words, Ruthanne picked up the tablet hesitantly.
The style of the item displayed on the screen was flamboyant. Dazzling gold rings, chained together, ended in a clasp from which a diamond hung.
It was a bracelet.
It’s exactly the same as the one Marianne lied about having lost.
Ruthanne understood at once. She knew what Theodoric was driving at..
He’s not gifting me jewelry. He’s humiliating me.
Ruthanne gritted her teeth. “What is the meaning of this?” she asked, suppressing her anger.
Theodoric frowned and said contemptuously, “I can give you whatever Marianne has, but you must ask for it instead of resorting to theft.”
