Chapter 1 I’m Pregnant?
“Madam, I-I need a pregnancy test.”
Although Josephine lowered her voice, she attracted many people’s attention because she looked so young like a teenager.
Blushing, she grabbed her pants and lowered her head in embarrassment.
The clerk reacted.
“Oh, you want this?”
She took a pregnancy test from the showcase and handed it to Josephine.
Josephine glanced at it. It was exactly what she wanted.
She asked quietly, “How much?”
“3 dollars”.
She took the money out of her pocket, put it down, turned around, and ran away. The clerk hesitated and ran after her.
“Hey, wait.”
Josephine looked back nervously.
“W-What?”
The clerk found that she was pretty with fair skin and a delicate face. Her pure eyes were stunning.
“Do you know how to use it?”
Josephine pressed her lips. She had no idea. But her best friend said there would be an instruction.
The clerk explained in a soft voice.
“You’ll see a tool for your urine. After you get the urine, drop a few drops of it in the testing area. If you get a red line, you are fine. If two, you … are pregnant.”
Awkward and nervous, Josephine grabbed the box.
“Thanks.”
She ran away fast. She had never been so afraid of people’s gazes.
She ran back home.
Her parents earned a living by selling roast chickens. And her younger brother should be in school. So she was alone at home.
Josephine ran into the bathroom and opened the box of the pregnancy test. According to the clerk’s instructions, she collected her urine and dropped it into the testing area.
Her hands kept shaking. Biting her lips, she stared at the test stick. At first, nothing happened. Then, a red color appeared quickly.
Holding her breath, she looked at it, praying that there would not be two lines. Josephine thought, “Please. No more lines. It can’t happen!”
The color spread as a red line appeared. It was vague and then got clearer. Josephine bit her lips slightly and felt that she was lucky. It suggested that she was not pregnant.
However, soon, the second line appeared. Josephine thought she didn’t see clearly, so she rubbed her eyes. Yet, the line became clearer and then as strong as the first one.
Her body went weak. She fell to the ground in the bathroom with a pale face.
She was pregnant! Why would there be two lines?
Josephine just got drunk in a bad mood that day. After she failed the college admissions test, her parents decided not to pay for her education. They wanted her to help them with their roast chicken business so that their family could afford her brothers’ education.
It made her sad. So she went to a bar with her best friend. She had never been to a bar before. Unexpectedly, Josephine ran into a bad guy and was saved by a man who seemed to be much older than her. When she woke up, she found herself naked in bed with the man.
Josephine was freaked out. After putting on her clothes, she ran back home. Days ago, she started feeling sick and dizzy. At first, she thought it was a heat stroke. But she didn’t get better after taking medicine. Then, her best friend suspected that Josephine might be pregnant.
It was a joke, in fact. However, Josephine took it seriously. She bought a test stick secretly to find out the truth. To her surprise, it was true that she got pregnant!
Josephine panicked. She couldn’t imagine what would happen once her parents learned the news. She was only 19-year-old. Apparently, her parents would go mad.
Josephine took her phone out and checked the time. It was 5 pm. Her younger brother would be home soon. Looking at the two red lines on the test stick, she hurried to put it into a small bag. After making sure nothing was left in the bathroom, she went out and threw it away.
When she went back to the fifth floor, she saw her brother open the door with a key.
He saw her too.
“Josie, did you go out today?”
Josephine was nervous.
“Yeah. I hung out with my friends.”
Harley Colon opened the door, but Josephine didn’t follow in. So he looked back at her.
“Are you leaving?”
She ran in.
“No. It’s time to cook. Mom and Dad will be home soon.”
Seeing that she ran into the indoor balcony to cook, Harley was confused because it seemed that something was wrong with her.
But Harley’s focus was on his studies. So he didn’t ask but entered his bedroom with his backpack.
The Colon family was not local here. Over two decades ago, Earl Colon and Lindsey Horton went to Geroll City to work soon after they got married. In the beginning, he did physical work, and they lived in a basement. Later, they changed their jobs a lot. Finally, they started a roast chicken business.
Since their roast chickens tasted good, the business was not bad. After Harley was born, they finally bought a small apartment in an old district.
Land price in Geroll City was extremely high. Even though it was an old district, the apartment was expensive. There was only a bedroom, a living room, a bathroom, and a kitchen. It was small. But Ben Colon, their first son, was in middle school back then. So they changed the kitchen into a small room for Ben and Harley.
But Josephine didn’t have her own room. Her parents got her a small bed in the living room. She slept there every night.
Her parents went home at 7 p.m. After washing their hands, the family of five had dinner at a small table.
“You should deliver the roast chickens tomorrow. Today, your dad got a big order from a restaurant. We’ll leave it to you.”
Josephine looked up at Lindsey, saying in a low voice.
“Mom, can you give me a few more days off? I want to hang out with my friends.”
Lindsey frowned.
“Hang out? They just want to show off their universities. You can’t even go to college. Why do you do that? Aren’t you embarrassed?”
Josephine’s eyes turned red. But she was pregnant. There would be heavy physical work if she delivered the chickens. What would happen to her baby…
It was an unexpected baby. She was unable to raise the baby. And she didn’t dare to tell her parents about the truth.
If she carried heavy things, she might lose the baby, however. Josephine looked down subconsciously at her belly in guilt.
She sniffed and sobbed.
“OK.”
The next morning, she was woken up by Lindsey. After washing up, she went to work with her parents without having breakfast.
