Chapter 279 Investigating at Evergreen University
After discussing with several people in the group, Freya got up and went to the window, feeling exhausted after a busy day.
Waiting and facing the unknown were truly the most agonizing times!
Her phone next to the computer rang, and Freya picked it up to see an unknown caller.
“Hello?” she answered the call.
The voice on the other end was low, husky, and magnetic. “Frey, it’s me, Radley.”
Freya pursed her lips. “Have you gotten updates on Melissa and Hannah’s case?”
“Not yet. I called to tell you not to worry too much, I’ll make sure nothing happens to them.”
Freya furrowed her brows. “This matter is probably not as simple as we think. I’m looking into it on my end, and if I find any leads, I’ll share them with you
She didn’t have the luxury to think about anything else at this time.
Fortunately, Radley didn’t say much more. After reassuring her to take care, he hung up.
Freya freshened up, changed her clothes, and called Braxton immediately after leaving the house.
The line connected in two shakes. “Frey, what’s up?”
It sounded somewhat chaotic on Braxton’s end,
“Brax, where are you right now?”
After an unresponsive ten seconds, the background noise on his side lessened.
“I’m having lunch with a friend,” Braxton spoke softly. “He knows a few people who work at the policé station. I’m trying to see if they can make us a copy of the evidence materials.”
“Brax, I suspect it’s the work of that group again.”
“That group?” Braxton continued after a beat, “You don’t suspect the group who stole The Compendium of Medical Wisdom, do you? What do they have to do with Mel and Hannah?”
Freya pressed her lips together tightly. “I’m not sure either, but the traces have been handled too thoroughly. Don’t you think it’s similar to the several car accidents we had before?”
She might not have suspected a thing if there hadn’t been a series of care accidents.
That group of people kept creating disturbances, all to destabilize the Kaufmanns.
Freya hesitated, locking her brows into a tight furrow as she wondered, Why won’t they take even more drastic measures against our family when they would go this far? If they dared to kill Benjamin, they should, by right, have the guts to kill me too. Are they worried that killing me would have too significant of an impact, and they’re worried about being on the police radar?
Freya rubbed her temples, feeling a terrible headache coming on.

To counter these people, she needed to uncover the secrets of The Compendium of Medical Wisdom.
It was only two in the afternoon, and Freya shut the windows, drew the curtains close, and returned to her bedroom.
She considered some ancient techniques which allowed contents to be hidden on paper.
Perhaps there really is something else in “The Compendium of Medical Wisdom?!”
Freya immediately logged into the search engine and started researching before quietly leaving Kaufmann Residence at 5:30 p.m., driving to Evergreen University.
There were many mobile vendors near the university entrance. Freya, dressed in casual clothing, blended in with the students coming and going, looking inconspicuous.
She sat down at a random stall to overhear the students around her discussing Benjamin’s death.
Benjamin, Melissa, and Hannah-these three individuals were relatively well-known at Evergreen University. Now that one of them was dead and the other two were taken into custody by the police, it immediately triggered a wave of speculation.
“My dad works at the police station. I overheard him on the phone yesterday saying they have all the evidence!
Freya furrowed her brow as she listened. To think the news has already spread widely! ·
She spent some time at the stall, listening to several versions of the case, before getting up and entering the campus of Evergreen University.
Within the university, as people passed Freya by, she could sometimes hear them mentioning Benjamin’s
name.
“It’s so scary. I won’t dare to go to Swan Lake anymore!”
“I thought Melissa and Benjamin were pretty in love with each other. How could something like this suddenly happen between them?”
“I heard that Hannah was also arrested by the police. Do you think it’s a love triangle? Maybe Benjamin was cheating on Melissa with Hannah, and Melissa killed Benjamin out of jealousy?”
“Love triangle? You’re making blind guesses here. I heard that Hannah was an accomplice!”
“But I thought the two girls were close. Maybe Benjamin was the one who cheated, and Melissa, out of anger, convinced Hannah to help her?”
“Who knows? Anyway, Benjamin’s from an average family, while Melissa and Hannah have affluent backgrounds. For all we know, they might dare to do just about anything. After all, they have their families. to clean up their mess.”
The discussions continued, and Freya frowned, and she walked from the main road to a smaller path.
“Excuse me, do you know how I can get to Swan Lake?” Freya stopped a passing female student and asked.
The girl looked at Freya with surprise and pointed in a certain direction, her gaze somewhat curious.
“Thank you.” Freya nodded in gratitude.

She asked a few more people along the way, and under their curious and strange gazes, Freya finally reached the last small path leading to Swan Lake.
She remembered that there was only one path leading to Swan Lake, and the route she was taking now was the same one that Hannah and Melissa had walked that day.
At a fork in the road, Freya hesitated. This seems to be the intersection Hannah described, where she and Melissa had separated.
She squinted her eyes and carefully observed the surrounding trees. This area within the campus was relatively secluded. There wasn’t a soul around; it was eerily quiet..
With a quiet sigh, she continued further. She didn’t encounter any surveillance cameras along the way. She walked until she reached two L-shaped buildings, with Swan Lake nestled between them.
She looked around.
These two L-shaped buildings were likely no longer in use by the University. As it was deep into autumn, the area around Swan Lake appeared desolate. The police investigation had concluded, but still, no one dared to approach the vicinity.
Freya walked to the edge of the lake and carefully observed.
As the police had mentioned, looking at the old watermarks, the water should have been about 4 feet deep. However, there was no water left in the lake now; it seemed that the police had drained it to collect evidence.
Freya looked at the deep moss in the lake. If an injured man fell in, it would be slippery at the bottom, making it difficult to climb out.
Freya let out a long sigh, realizing she still hadn’t found any new clues.
At that, she turned to look at the L-shaped buildings. There were several surveillance cameras inside, but they were all facing the corridors. Moreover, these two buildings hadn’t been used for a long time. Every the red lights on the surveillance cameras were off.
Freya, frowning, pondered for a moment. Surely, this wasthe spot for couples to visit before the incident-she had seen quite a few faded footprints in the nearby woods on her way here-as for fingerprints or other evidence near Swan Lake, the police had already investigated and didn’t find any obvious leads.
