Chapter 49 What is Your Purpose?
Darn it!
She was caught red–handed!
Julia clutched the man’s shirt with an overwhelming sense of nervousness.
Should she run for it?
No, that wasn’t an option. She wasn’t the same independent Julia from her previous life. She had someone to worry about now, someone she couldn’t leave behind.
Conrad, she couldn’t afford to be careless.
Escaping was out of the question. In her current situation, fleeing wouldn’t provide any comfort. And besides, she had a valid reason for being here.
But finding a suitable reason for breaking into a man’s room in the middle of the night and getting caught was a challenge in itself.
As Julia grappled with the problem, Jared approached her.
“Look up at me.”
His voice echoed above her, sending a shiver down her spine. Should she meet his gaze?
Not looking up would make her appear guilty. But what if he reads something from her face?
Before she could decide, Jared’s hand gently lifted her chin, tilting her small face upward to meet his gaze.
Caught off guard, Julia found herself frozen in this intimate position.
What was going on? She felt like Jared was… amused?
“Now, tell me, what were you really up to?” he asked.
Hearing his question, Julia nervously stammered, “I–I… um…”
It seemed he had seen through her actions.
In Jared’s eyes, her hesitation appeared as shyness.
“I know. You came for me,” he said with a playful smile.
“Eh?” Julia’s shock quickly turned into confusion. She couldn’t quite grasp his line of thought.
“You don’t have to deny it,” Jared continued, taking the shirt from her hand. “Shiloh was right. You didn’t marry me on a whim to spite me; you actually have your sights set on me.”
Julia tilted her head and regarded Jared. After a moment, she glanced at the shirt in his hand, her mouth slightly ajar, unable to respond.
“I really didn’t expect you to be so fond of me,” Jared mused, his satisfaction evident in his expression.
When he walked in and saw Julia holding his shirt, he felt an unexpected surge of happiness. If he hadn’t remained composed and swift, he might have given in to his desire and swept her onto the bed right then and there.
“Huh?” Julia nearly choked on her own saliva. “You’ve got it all wrong. I don’t like you that couldn’t sleep, and I thought maybe if I came here… You know, just walked around a bit.”
way. I
1:50.
“Just walked around casually? Picked out my clothes from the wardrobe casually? Held my clothes. and rubbed them repeatedly?” Jared interjected.
“Um…” Julia struggled to find a suitable argument.
“You’re still not admitting it? Alright, I’ll make it harder for you to hide.” Jared tapped on his phone to play a recording that had been sent to him by Cameron earlier.
“I’m after Jared’s money and want to become the lady of the villa. What’s more, I’ve come up with at brilliant plan over the past few days. I drugged Jared, slept with him, and then got myself pregnant with his child. That way, he won’t be able to get rid of me.”
Ah.
Julia’s mouth hung open as she stared at Jared’s phone. It seemed her mouth couldn’t close for a long while.
“Now, what else do you want to say?” Jared’s lips curled into a smile as he looked at Julia.
Her mind was in turmoil.
This recording was obviously a scheme orchestrated by Cameron. It had caused Jared to misunderstand her true intentions, making him think she had some ulterior motives for being in his room late at night, possibly aiming to seduce him rather than having any innocent purpose. This development actually made her situation easier to handle. She could claim it as a plausible
excuse.
Julia regained her composure, her face no longer betraying panic.
Meeting Jared’s gaze directly, she calmly spoke, “Yes, you’re handsome with a refined demeanor. You carry an air of dignity. Any woman would be impressed upon seeing you, and I’m no exception. Moreover, I was heartbroken by a terrible man and happened to cross paths with you So, I… uh, I might have lost control for a moment.”
Upon hearing her words, a surge of joy swept through Jared’s heart. It radiated from his eyes, giving his face an infectious vibrancy, like the warmth of spring.
Taking a sigh, Julia lowered her head, continuing her act. “But I know we come from different worlds. On the day we got married, I promised you I wouldn’t develop any feelings for you. I won’t be drawn to you. So, about tonight, consider it an insignificant incident. When I eventually heal your brother’s leg, I’ll divorce you and vanish from your world forever.”
Julia was quite impressed with her performance. She even managed to move with her words. Now all she had to do was carry on pretending to be dejected, then gracefully leave his room.
Just as Julia was about to enact her escape plan, her face was unexpectedly lifted by the man’s large hand. Before she could fathom his intentions, his thin lips had sealed hers.
Julia’s eyes widened in an instant, her pupils trembling with surprise. Her brain seemed short–circuit, rendered incapable of coherent thought by the sudden kiss.
Her mental faculties were in turmoil, thoughts jumbling together.
After what felt like an eternity, the man’s lips eventually left hers. His dark eyes danced with uncontainable delight. His hands slid from her face to his shoulders, his eyes locking onto hers in
an intense gaze.
Julia’s mind was a whirlwind of confusion.
Chapter 49 What is Your Purpose?
“I’m retracting my previous statement.” The man’s voice was a sultry undertone, a note of temptation that left one intoxicated and helpless to resist.
“Huh?” Julia still struggled to grasp his meaning.
Before she could ask, his alluring voice brushed her ear again.
“I’m allowing you to have feelings for me.”
Boom.
Thunder seemed to crash into Julia’s head. She stared at Jared with wide, incredulous eyes, lost in a daze of disbelief.
Her reaction didn’t escape Jared’s notice. He believed that the girl was overwhelmed with joy, rendering her momentarily speechless, which further deepened her own pleasure.
“Come with me,” Jared said, taking Julia’s hand and leading her toward the bed. He sat down first and patted the sheets next to him. “Sit here.”
Julia hesitated, her instinct urging her to flee.
Jared, however, interpreted her hesitation as shyness, confirming his belief that Julia’s relationship with her ex–fiancé had been devoid of intimacy.
“Don’t worry, and I won’t do anything you’re not ready for.”
Julia nodded, her voice barely audible. “Okay.”
As she took her seat, Jared moved closer until they sat side by side on the bed.
Julia was grappling with the uncertainty of her situation. She had come to find something, yet this scenario was quickly spiraling out of her control.
What baffled her most was Jared’s declaration moments ago.
Did he allow her to have feelings for him?
What did that even mean?
“You can stay here tonight.”
