Chapter 227: Then You Don’t Like Him?
With a half–serious expression, Jared stared at the tightly closed door with his deep, dark Just a moment ago, he suddenly realized the person inside the room felt familiar.
Even Yannie noticed it and was also staring at the door.
eyes.
Randel sensed the pair’s suspicion. To divert their attention, he picked up his tea and offered, “Aunt Yannie, have some tea.”
“Oh, alright,” Yannie replied. Only then did Yannie’s attention shift. She took a sip and sighed. audibly, looking at Randel with a compassionate gaze.
“Poor child! Back then, you and Juju used to come to our house to play. Now you’ve grown up so much, but poor Juju…”
Her voice wavered with emotion, and Yannie wiped away a tear with her hand.
Hearing her sobs, Jared redirected his attention to Yannie, offering her two tissues, but his gaze flickered back to the closed door upstairs. The image of the person he had clashed with Randel about last night flashed in his mind. As such, he thought it was a woman.
Is that person upstairs?‘ He wondered.
“Randy, how have you been all these years?” Yannie asked, wholly diverted from the person
upstairs.
“Thank you for your concern, Aunt Yannie. I’ve been doing well and even managed to establish my own company,” Randel replied with a genuine smile.
“Good, good! You’ve truly made a name for yourself. Your parents in heaven must be so proud,” Yannie praised, her eyes filled with admiration.
Randel smiled in response.
Just then, Yannie’s thoughts shifted to something that had been bothering her.
“By the way, I saw on the surveillance footage that you were being chased in the hospital. Do you know who was after you?” she asked.
Despite the distance, Julia managed to hear Yannie’s question. Intrigued, Julia discreetly opened a crack in the door to eavesdrop.
Randel shook his head slowly, his face clouded with frustration. “The people chasing me all had masks and sunglasses on, so I didn’t even catch a glimpse of their faces. Besides, I was in such a rush to escape that I didn’t get a good look at them.”
Deep down, Randel knew that if he had seen their faces clearly, he would have sought revenge for Juju and the others long ago. The mere thought of it made his fists clench, knuckles protruding against his will.
Jared listened intently to Randel’s explanation and nodded. “I’ll keep digging into this matter, and I promise to contact you as soon as we have any results.”
“Thank you,” Randel replied as his tense shoulders relaxed slightly, and a hint of gratitude lingered in his eyes. After a brief pause, Jared got straight to the point.
“Last night, were you with that woman?”
Randel didn’t hesitate. “I don’t know her.”
Jared locked his gaze on Randel, his eyes searching for any signs of deception. However, after a thorough examination, he found nothing to suggest Randel was lying,
Chapter 227: Then You Don’t Like Him?
“Why did you protect her, then?” Jared inquired, genuinely puzzled by Randel’s actions. Randel furrowed his brow, his mind grappling with the answer. He had initially considered telling Jared about the little jade statue pendant the woman wore, but there was more to it than that. It was the unsettling feeling she gave him, one that made it difficult for him to harbor ill intentions. towards her. Moreover, she seemed to possess knowledge of the hidden mechanism on the sofa.
Yet, Randel had no intention of revealing these details to Jared. It wasn’t that he didn’t trust Jared. It was because Randel had already made up his mind to personally avenge Juju and the Watson family. For him, though Jared had a good relationship with their family, he was still an outsider.
Jared, perceptive as ever, seemed to grasp Randel’s unspoken thoughts and decided not to press further. He understood that the Watson family’s affairs were deeply personal and might not be appropriate for an outsider like himself to become too deeply involved.
Yannie’s voice broke the momentary silence, drawing everyone’s attention. She looked at Joseph beside her, who signaled to someone to bring in a locked safe.
“What’s this?” Randel asked, his curiosity piqued.
Julia, who had been eavesdropping from behind the partially open door, couldn’t resist her curiosity. She poked her head out and stared at the safe.
‘What could be inside it?‘ she wondered internally.
As she watched, she suddenly heard a woman’s voice whispering in her ear.
“Juju, this is the treasure your parents left for you, and the password is…”
Terrified, Julia snapped her head sideways, scanning the room to see if anyone else was present. Finding no one, she questioned herself, ‘Who was that? Am I just hearing things?‘
Her mind was thrown into momentary confusion.
“This is something your parents left behind. It might be a coincidence, or perhaps your parents intentionally arranged it. Just a month before the incident at the Watson family, your parents sent this thing over. They said that the contents of this safe were Juju’s treasures. Since Juju gave the little jade statue to Jared, this item is now considered Juju’s gift. Now that Juju and your parents have all left this world, this thing should belong to your family,” Yannie explained, handing the safe over to Randel.
Randel reached out and gently touched the safe. Soon, he noticed the keyhole and the combination lock.
Frowning, he said, “But…”
Yannie anticipated his concern and interrupted him before he could voice it. “We don’t know the password either, and this safe requires both the password and the key to open. Your parents didn’t give us the key back then. They probably thought Juju would marry into our family in the future, so they didn’t mention it. They just didn’t expect that Juju would eventually.
Yannie couldn’t continue her sentence as she felt a lump in her throat, preventing her from speaking. The unspoken sorrow hung heavily in the air, a painful reminder of the tragic turn of events that had befallen the Watson family.
Understanding the weight of the situation, Randel nodded in response to Yannie’s unspoken words “Either way, let me keep this thing for now,” he said, referring to the safe. He decided to keep everything related to Juju close to him, including the little jade statue.
Remembering it, Randel turned to Jared and asked, “About the little jade statue, can you give it to
me?”
Chapter 227: Then You Don’t Like Him?
Julia, hidden from view but still listening intently, felt a surge of anxiety. Her heart, which had just started to calm down, began racing again. She silently pleaded, ‘Please, just drop the topic!” Because if Jared and Randel teamed up, they might quickly uncover that she was the person from last night.
“Well…” Yannie hesitated, knowing that Jared had given the little jade statue to Julia.
“In a year, I’ll return it to you,” Jared replied, his tone resolute.
Randel frowned and asked, “Why does it have to be a year?”
Yannie shared Randel’s sentiment, upset about why Jared entrusted the precious jade statue to Julia. After all, it originally belonged to Juju.
Jared pursed his lips, his decision unyielding. He repeated, “In a year, I’ll personally return it to
you.”
Seeing that Jared was firm in his stance, Randel decided not to push the matter further. Besides, the little jade statue originally belonged to Juju and was given to Jared. He didn’t have the right to demand it. Still, he really wished it to be with him as he felt so alone, and for years, his desire for revenge had been his only support. So having more of Juju’s belongings around him brought him some comfort, nothing more.
“Alright, in a year then,” Randel reluctantly agreed.
With the jade statue matter concluded, Julia silently breathed a sigh of relief, grateful they hadn’t probed further into it. The whole topic had been incredibly stressful for her, and her heart finally started to settle.
The group continued chatting for a while longer, but eventually, the conversation ended naturally. Randel escorted Yannie and Jared to the door.
“Randy, come to my place sometime when you’re free,” Yannie warmly invited.
“Sure,” Randel nodded, reciprocating the politeness.
As Julia watched Yannie and Jared depart, she couldn’t help but pat her chest and let out a long. pent–up sigh of relief. She had been terrified at the thought of being discovered.
Once Randel closed the door, he spoke loudly, breaking Julia from her anxious reverie. “They’ve left. You can come out now.”
Only then did Julia push open the door and come down from upstairs.
“Thank you for covering for me just now. Otherwise, I would have been in big trouble,” Juba admitted, her gratitude evident.
“Are you really that afraid of Jared?” Randel asked, his curiosity piqued but also with a hint of concern Juju had often mentioned Jared, so he couldn’t help but be somewhat curtous.
“Afraid? Why would I be afraid of him? He’s not a monster,” Juha retorted, dismissing the idea with a wave of her hand. “What I said earlier was because he can get a bit jealous. When he’s in that state, he doesn’t always think rationally, so it’s best to avoid unnecessary misunderstandings.” Randel nodded, acknowledging her explanation. He sat across from Julia and asked, “I’m curious. How did you two meet?”
Randel had investigated Julia and knew she was just a wealthy heiress with a world of difference in status compared to Jared. So, basically, they shouldn’t have had any chance to meet.
“I didn’t expect you to be so nosy,” Julia remarked, raising an eyebrow with a Buschievous glint in her eye.
Chapter 227 Then You Don’t Like Him?
Randel leaned back, his expression intrigued but not pressing. “I’m just casually asking. There’s no need to answer if you don’t want to.”
Julia smiled, feeling a bit more at ease. “I didn’t say I wasn’t going to answer you.”
Taking a deep breath, she began her story, “It’s like this… at that time, I was so angry about something that I married Jared on a whim. Coincidentally, he had also been stood up, so we both got what we needed.”
Randel was taken aback by her unexpected response. He had anticipated a Cinderella–and–Prince Charming kind of story, but this revelation caught him by surprise.
“So, do you like him?” Randel asked, his curiosity getting the better of him.
