Chapter 189: Fluttering Heart
“Put me down, Jared! Julia‘ s screams filled the air, causing Jared’s cheeks to flush in embarrassment.
As Julia looked at the man, whose lips now curved into a sweet smile, she couldn’t deny how he looked incredibly handsome, especially as he smiled.
‘Why isn’t he putting me down?‘ Julia asked in her head as their gazes locked.
“Can you please put me down now?” Julia‘ s words were tinged with a mix of frustration and curiosity.
“Fine.” Jared’s satisfaction radiated as he set Julia gently on the ground. He scooped her up again without missing a beat, carrying her to the dining table.
“What are you doing?” Julia queried in protest, brows squinted in confusion.
“I’ll fetch you some bird’s nest soup. Wait for me here.”
Julia sensed joy and satisfaction in her heart as she watched his retreating figure. She let out a soft sigh, thinking to herself. “Why is he treating me as if I’m special?‘
Her thoughts might have concealed her true feelings, but deep down, her heart warmed in his
care.
And why did it keep fluttering every time their gazes locked?
The next day, Julia‘ s ache all over her body miraculously disappeared. The previous night’s events taught her a valuable lesson not to get wasted again next time. She was lucky Jared came upon her, or else her reputation could have already been ruined.
Besides, even without having to confront those criminals, the mere thought of her naked pictures circulating the internet made her cringe with embarrassment. But the more she contemplated, the more fear gnawed at her.
“Earth to Julia?” Maddie‘ s loud voice jolted Julia out of her reverie.
She looked at her friend, repeatedly blinking in confusion. “What?”
Maddie rolled her eyes back and huffed. “Seriously! Were you even listening? Jeez! Are you really Julia? You‘ re probably an alien mimicking her!”
Chuckling, Julia offered her friend an apologetic look. “Sorry. I just got lost in my thoughts. What were you saying?”
Maddie let out an exasperated sigh. “Forget it! Here’s what you need to know. Henry kind of asked me to live in his place, like with his parents. I barely know him, and I’m pretty sure his parents are a bother. I don‘ t want to go. He can’t even give me a call.”
“Then, don’t go,” Julia advised.
“I already told him so. But he keeps insisting, telling me the baby should grow with both He told me he’ll live at mine if I don’t want to live with him in his parent’s house. Ugh! Seriously!” Maddie’s frustration was palpable in her tone.
parents.
Julia pondered for a moment before responding. “Funny how Henry, who used to be so carefree, suddenly turns into a responsible guy. Maybe he’s changed.”
Maddie’s eyes widened, as she wasn’t too pleased at her observation. “What? Are you siding with him now?”

“Of course not! I’m on your side, no matter what! I’m just saying he’s got a point.”
“You‘ re really on his side!” Maddie exclaimed in disbelief.
Julia peeled a banana and handed it to her friend, hoping it would calm her down. “I’ll always support your decision. But Henry also deserved to see how his baby grows. Let’s say I’m on your baby’s side, okay? Just cat this and chill!”
Maddie pouted. “Henry’s a great man. His family must be loaded, too.” Her eyes narrowed in suspicion. She sensed Julia still had something to say.
Julia hesitated before responding. “Well, yeah. His family is well–of–I mean, well–mannered. And they arent poor. If that’s what you wanted.
Her eyes were still narrowed as she interrupted Julia. “You know something, don’t you? Spill!” Julia flickered her eyes in panic. Actually, Henry’s a privileged person like Jared. He was a business magnate and the heir to his family’s company. She hadn’t told Maddie about it yet, as she was worried Maddie would be anxious because she was just a mere commoner.
Julia hoped Henry would tell Maddie himself. It turned out he hadn’t told her yet. But that was because he genuinely cared for her and didn’t want to upset her.
“I know that Henry is a good person. And that his feelings for you are real,” Julia said, changing the subject.
Suspicion dawned on Maddie’s face as she squinted. “It doesn’t matter if they are poor or not. My family and I have stable jobs.”
Maddie’s family even owned a house in the suburbs. Since the town was being reconstructed, they will be paid with the demolition fee.
Maddie might be above the average people, but still, her status was nothing compared to
Henry‘ s.
Luckily, Henry came back, clutching a coffee pot and empty bowls. The two went silent as they sat on their table.
“Thanks for siding with me, Julia,” Henry playfully said, teasing Maddie. “Tell me if you want me to return the favor soon.”
“How did you know? Wait. What did you say? confusion. She then glanced at Julia afterward. “Did something happen?”
Maddie asked Henry, eyes narrowing in
cups.
“What? Did you two fight?” Henry chimed in as he poured some on their
Julia smiled. “No, we didn’t. We just argued like normal adults.
“About what?” Maddie probed.
“Okay. Let’s let her be. We have our own conflict to resolve.” Henry peered at Maddie in anticipation.
“Anyway, I prepared a bird’s nest soup for you two. Here, give it a try.”
The tonics aroma wafted in the air. Maddie looked at the yellowish liquid on the pot
‘Wait. Did he say bird‘ s nest? Maddie had never tasted it in her entire life.
“I don’t want it,” Maddie uttered, puzzling the two.
“Oh, no. Just like that, three thousand dollars wasted.”
Maddie blinked repeatedly at his words. “Three thousand dollars? Are you kidding me?”

Henry took out the receipt from his pocket and handed it to Maddie. “See for yourself.” After seeing the five digits on the receipt, Maddie suddenly felt weak.
“Now you drink it,” Henry urged her.
“You‘ re so reckless! How could you spend thirty–oh, my God! This is ridiculous!” Maddie grimaced.
For Henry, it was just a paltry three thousand dollars. The price was nothing to him.
“So, do you want to have a taste now? Just tell me, if you don’t want it, I’ll throw it out.”
“Throw it out? Gosh! Just how much do you earn from your work for you to be able to throw something worth three grand!”
“So give it a taste. It’s just brewed.”
Just in time, Maddie‘ s stomach growled. “Fine! Give it to me!”
She was sure she wasn‘ t hungry. But it seemed like her baby wanted to give it a taste. Instead of giving the whole bowlto Maddie, Henry dug out a spoonful of the soup and fed it to Maddie.
“Let me feed you, okay?”
As the ongoing drama between the two went on, Julia left the ward, shaking her head.
Henry reminded her of Jared. She suddenly felt emotional. When a piercing pain suddenly twisted in her abdomen. The pain was so intense that Julia had to scream and squat on the floor, pressing her stomach.
Despite the pain, she heard the voice of an approaching man from behind her.
“Are you okay, Miss?”
