Chapter 38: Mae is Back, Did You Know?
The speaking young man is Mae’s paternal half–brother, Lysander Lee.
“Lysander” in his name represents the ambition of a swan, aspiring to great heights and leaping over a thousand miles. The choice of this character reflects the high expectations the Lee family holds.
for him.
The young woman beside him is his biological sister, Seraphina.
Hearing her younger brother mention Mark, Seraphina’s displeasure became evident. “Mark is divorced from her now. She can’t rely on his influence anymore. I suspect she’s out of her mind, thinking that Mark would still support her so she dares to speak this way to Grandfather.”
As she spoke, she turned to look at Mr. Lee, her brows furrowed with concern. “Grandfather, she’s so stubborn. What should we do next?”
Mr. Lee’s expression was equally grim at this point. Having enjoyed a life of luxury and respect, he was unaccustomed to anyone not treating him with deference. To be mocked and insulted by his granddaughter multiple times was something he couldn’t stomach.
After a long pause, he suddenly remembered something, took out his phone, and made a call, “Mr. Smith, Mae has returned. Do you know?”
When Mark received Mr. Lee’s call, he had just emerged from a conference room. The entire meeting had concluded with department heads nervously trying to satisfy him. Since early morning. Mark had been wearing a stern expression, his face so dark that no one dared to breathe too loudly, fearing they might be fired for even inhaling too much air.
“Mr. Lee, what can I do for you?” Receiving a call from him at this time was somewhat unexpected. Despite his lack of goodwill towards the Lee family, his intuition told him this call was related to Mae. He answered instinctively.
On the other end of the line, Mr. Lee’s voice came through. Hearing his words, Mark was taken aback. He neither confirmed nor denied it, just retorted, “Mr. Lee, have you forgotten that Mae and I
are divorced?”
A smirk of disdain curved at the corner of Mark’s lips, and his response left Mr. Lee on the other end. of the line momentarily speechless.
“I’m busy now and don’t have time to chat with you. Sorry.”
Before Mr. Lee could respond, Mark abruptly ended the call.
Back in his office, however, Mark continued to mull over Mr. Lee’s recent phone call, his expression revealing a sense of perplexity.
Watching his boss’s expression since the morning Ms. Lee arrived and left, Mr. Sands, who was trailing behind, felt a bit complex. Ever since the Lady left in the morning, his boss had been in a somewhat gloomy mood, like a resentful husband who’d been abandoned, finding fault with everything and everyone.
Now, having received a call from Ms. Lee’s grandfather, his boss wore another expression that was equally inscrutable. What was the CEO up to?
Although curious, Mr. Sands didn’t dare to ask too much and said his goodbyes. “If there’s nothing
else, President, I’ll take my leave.”
After half a second of contemplation, Mark suddenly spoke up. “Where is Mae staying?”
Mr. Sands paused, worried he might have missed something and fearing he might be criticized. He promptly responded, “I’ll find out right away.”
Mark didn’t stop him from leaving, indicating his tacit approval of Mr. Sands action.
On the other side, after Mr. Lee ended the call, Seraphina spoke up slightly discontentedly
“Grandfather, why did you call Mr. Smith? Could it be that he still cares about her now?” Seraphina said, slightly discontented
Mr. Lee frowned without saying a word. After a moment, he finally spoke, “The way Mae is so concerned about Mark, I believe that as long as Mark intervenes, she won’t be able to ignore him.”
