Run Away From
Chapter 138 From the beginning, were you wary of me?
Mae didn’t deny it, “It’s important to be defensive. Facts have proved that I was right, didn’t I?”
With that, a sarcasm appeared in Mae’s eyes.
Mark looked at her in silence. His thin lips were tightly pursed.
His eyes fell on the black–rimmed glasses on Mae’s face. No wonder she would wear these glasses every time she went to treat Jennifer. But other than that, he had never seen her wear them on other occasions.
Only now did he realize that it was not just a pair of glasses, but a pair of video recording equipment that could perfectly protect her.
He didn’t know how he was feeling at the moment. He had already known a lot of things, yet he still insists on tormenting his own self.
Mae smiled and did not deny it, “Didn’t I say it, it’s just to protect myself. After all, people’s hearts are biased. Even if CEO Smith prides himself on being fair, after all, you and I are of two families. That child belongs to you CEO Smith. The child was very important that the moment something bad happen, someone would be blame. One is your mother and the other is the child’s mother. Perhaps, if I can’t manage to protect myself, I’ll probably be held accountable for it, don’t you think?”
Mae do not intend to vent out any anger towards Mark, rather she’s just calmly reasoning to him. However, she wasn’t aware of how her words could deeply affect Mark. As if like knives, her words pierced through his heart as she mentioned that they belong to different families now.
She had never chosen to believe him.
His eyes were filled with loneliness and sadness.
Mae thought this scene was ridiculous. She didn’t know why he looked at her with such disappointed eyes and asked her if she had been protecting him from the beginning.
What about me protecting him?
Shouldn’t he be on guard?
At this moment, a ghastly wrath burst into her heart. She frowned and said,
“Mark Smith, don’t look at me like this. Ask yourself, if I don’t make these preparations in advance, then you would definitely believe Jennifer’s and your mother’s accusations and make me pay for it, right?”
“No.”
Mark replied without hesitation, though he can’t help but be upset after hearing Mae’s words.
“I won’t.”
He looked straight in her eye and repeated every word.
However, Mae did not believe what he said. A child he valued so much just died, yet he doesn’t feel an ounce of anger or even suspect her at all?
Who’s he kidding?
A dog won’t even believe him!
“As long as the situation calls for it, I’m ready to throw the evidence in front of you.”
Mae looked at him coldly. “Mark, as to how your child passed away, I’ve given you the evidence. You can investigate as you please. I just hope that your family will not bother me again.”
She took a step closer to Mark and looked directly into his obscure eyes.
“Your family is the best at poking people’s hearts, so don’t pretend to be hurt. And…”
She paused for a moment. She did not know when her fingertips had penetrated deep into her flesh.
“Don’t mention that child back then. You don’t have any right. Your whole family doesn’t deserve to mention her. She’s not a tool you could use against me.”
The more she spoke, the angrier she became.
After taking a few deep breaths, she managed to calm down the fury raging within her. “Go back quickly and comfort your Jennifer. Now that the child is gone, our business with each other ends here.”
After she finished speaking, she opened the car’s door. She was about to sit in when Mark suddenly grabbed her arm.
She turned around and met Mark’s scarlet eyes. His eyes were filled with emotions that she could not understand, as if he was struggling with something.
“Why do you think I blabbered the matters regarding that child just so I could hurt you?”
The bottom of Mark’s eyes turned scarlet. Only then did Mae realize that his eyes were now filled with contempt.
“Don’t you?”
Mae’s arm hurt from being pulled by Mark. She hated feeling pain, but never would she allow herself cry in front of this man. Even when she gave birth to Little Jane before, she did not cry despite suffering from tremendous pain.
Sadly, at this time around, all the events from the past she never wanted to mention and which she chose to bury deep in her heart began to emerge. The pain in her arm was really unbearable for her to the point that tears welled up in her scornful eyes. “If you hadn’t told anyone, how did your mother and Jennifer know that you forced me to abort my child?”
She looked straight into his eyes, her clear and calm eyes becoming aggressive at this moment.
She almost used all of her strength to free her arm from Mark’s grip. “Mark, my child was gone a long time ago. However, my life doesn’t revolve around you. And it’s neither none of my business whether you want to have a baby with Jennifer or what. But I can’t forgive you if you use my dead child to try exploit me just to please that woman. Really, I couldn’t even get your intentions!”
She saw the shock in Mark’s eyes gradually widening, and traces of hatred emerged from his eyes, “You really make me sick!” Mae exclaimed.
After saying all those things, she wiped the tears from her face and turned around to get into the car.
She slammed the door so hard and did not glance at Mark’s face again, as doing so would only intensify her growing resentment towards him.
Only she and Mark knew regarding the matter of aborting her child. Besides it happened ages ago. So, how did Mrs. Smith and Jennifer learn about it?
Despite how Mark tries to deny it, she could not think of anyone else who would spread the truth about it.
She could easily imagine the way Mark told Jennifer as to how he had forced her to abort the child, just to let Jennifer have a clean and unobstructed seat towards the Smith family.
Mrs. Smith and Jennifer both used that incident to agitate her and attack her. They used her child’s life to show off Mark’s affection in front of her.
If Mae hadn’t taken precautions, she was afraid that even her bones would be eaten up by them.
★★
Since that unhappy parting happened, Mae had never heard any news about Mark and Jennnifer again. It was not until half a month later that she accidentally heard that the Smith Corporation had canceled all endorsement partnership with Jennifer Bleak.
