Chapter 118: Mark Is A Bone I Discarded, Unwanted. Yet Here You Are, Parading It In Front Of Me
Mae glanced at the time; it was the second day of Jennifer’s medical treatment.
Originally, she had made plans to take her daughter, Sandra, to the playground in the afternoon. Breaking their arrangement might disappoint Sandra, so Mae calculated the timing and addressed Auntie Melissa, the nanny.
“Auntie Melissa, I have some matters to attend to this afternoon. Could you take Sandra to the playground for a while? I’ll join you as soon as I finish up.”
“Of course, no problem,” Auntie Melissa replied with a warm smile.
Inside Smith Corporation…
“Mr. Smith, the investigation results have come in,” Robert said, handing over a file folder to Mark. He then stood to the side, awaiting Mark’s response.
Taking the folder, Mark opened it, his expression gradually darkening as he read its contents. “It’s him?” Mark’s voice held no inflection, but Robert could feel his heart skip a beat, and he discreetly
observed Mark’s face for a reaction.
There was an air of frigid tension in the room.
Mark’s next question caught Robert off guard. “What’s the date today?”
“It’s a new month, the first, Sir,” Robert answered, adjusting his glasses. He couldn’t help but wonder about the significance of Mark’s question.
Mark’s gaze remained fixed on the view outside the window. After a moment of contemplation, he responded with a deep hum before lapsing into silence once again. The gravity of the situation seemed to hang in the air, unspoken.
At Hedwer van Duranstrom Advanced Private Hospital…
“Mae, you’ve arrived,” Jennifer greeted, her voice carrying a forced smile. She suppressed a fleeting coldness in her eyes, masking it with apparent warmth.
“Hmm…” Mae stepped forward, placing her hand on Jennifer’s pulse. Her gaze remained lowered, and she didn’t speak a word.
Jennifer observed her in this state, recalling the information she had received two days ago. A calculating, cold smile flitted across her eyes.
“Mae, I’ve heard about the situation between you and Mark,” Jennifer’s voice was soft, laced with moments of feigned pity and remorse.
Mae raised her eyes to meet Jennifer’s gaze. Her clear eyes betrayed no emotion. Jennifer continued with her well–rehearsed script:
“I couldn’t have expected that Mark would force you to terminate your pregnancy back then.”
Mae’s hand paused momentarily, a glint of icy resolve flickering in her eyes.

I see how much he values the child in my womb. He seems to love it dearly. It’s surprising that he could be so cruel as to make you abort your child.”
Jennifer reached out, as if to hold Mae’s hand, her eyes brimming with faux sympathy and
compassion. “I’m sorry, Mae. I misjudged you before, blaming you for disappearing for four years. I never imagined the truth behind your actions.”
Mae’s face remained impassive. Even as she listened to Jennifer’s words, her expression remained unchanged. She finished the task of administering the needles to Jennifer before lifting her eyes to meet her gaze once more.
Beneath Jennifer’s feigned concern, Mae sensed a hidden undercurrent of gloating. Yet, Mae simply glanced at Jennifer without acknowledging her words. Instead, she calmly stated, “I’ll be back in half
an hour.”
Jennifer felt irked by Mae’s apparent indifference. Observing Mae’s composed demeanor, she grew even more frustrated.
As Mae turned to leave, Jennifer couldn’t resist adding, “Mae, no one else is here. You don’t need to put on this facade of indifference. I know you’re struggling internally.”
Mae halted her steps and turned to face Jennifer again, a faint smirk playing at the corner of her lips.
Jennifer despised seeing that expression on Mae’s face. Whenever she looked at her like this she feels as if Mae had effortlessly uncovered her façade. With this, Jennifer’s irritation intensified.
She furrowed her brow and was about to respond when Mae interrupted, “You’re right. No one else is here. There’s no need for you to pretend so hard in front of me.”
Jennifer’s mouth twitched, her confusion evident. “Mae, what are you talking about?”
Mae maintained her playful smile, her eyes fixed on Jennifer’s face. In response, Jennifer abandoned her pretense and met Mae’s gaze with a chilly smile.
“I truly can’t fathom your mindset. Mark divorced you, rejecting both you and your child. What exactly are you being noble about?” Jennifer’s words hung in the air for a moment. She looked at Mae’s face, which did not show the slightest bit of anger at being poked and prodded, but instead increased the laughter in her eyes, and even, she saw a hint of faint mockery in this disgusting smile of Mae.
This kind of feeling was just like when you do everything possible to jump up and down in front of someone else, but the other party only then was amused by the appearance of a clown, Jennifer’s heart was even more furious.
She glared at Mae in an undying manner before she shifted her gaze to her slightly protruding belly, a smugness lurking beneath her demeanor.
“If Mark claims to dislike children, then why is he so concerned about the child I’m carrying?”
Jennifer paused, arching an eyebrow at Mae, searching for any sign of jealousy or anger. Yet, Mae’s expression remained unchanged, her calm demeanor undisturbed by the taunts.
Frustration churned within Jennifer as she observed Mae’s unyielding calmness. It was as if Mae was entirely impervious to her attempts to provoke her emotions.
Jennifer’s words grated on Mae’s nerves, igniting annoyance within her. Jennifer’s taunts pushed Mae to her limit, but she maintained her outward composure.
“Considering it this way, Mae, you truly have my sympathy. Your deceased child is even more pitiable,

having a useless mother like you. They say a man’s love for a child depends on his love for the child’s mother. Clearly, Mark doesn’t love you at all, Mae. You’re truly a pitiable soul,” Jennifer jeered, punctuating her words as she covered her mouth and let out a few sounds of smug playful laughter.
Finally, Mae responded, her response was subtle but decisive. She closed the gap between them, a shadow clouding her clear eyes as she smiled.
Jennifer, taken aback by this transformation, felt her defenses rise. “Mae, stay away from me. What do you intend to do? If you cross any lines, Mark won’t let you off. I… I…”
Before Jennifer could finish her sentence, Mae’s grip closed around her jaw. The force wasn’t extreme, yet Jennifer was paralyzed with fear. The memory of the day Mae had slapped Rebecca flashed in her mind, leaving her trembling involuntarily.
Mae’s smile seemed to mask a fierce aura, casting a daunting presence around her, making Jennifer unable to stop her body from sending out a slight shiver. “Do you realize how much you resemble a beggar who picked up a bone from the master’s table, only to mock the master for not having any bones left? It’s both pathetic and amusing.”
“You… you…” Jennifer struggled to respond amidst Mae’s grip on her chin.
“Mark is a bone I discarded, unwanted. Yet here you are, parading it in front of me as if you’ve achieved something. You’re like a clown, performing for an audience. Haven’t you seen it? Do you want me to hold a mirror for you just so you realize how pathetic you are being right now?” Mae continued.
“You…” Jennifer stammered.
Mae released Jennifer’s jaw abruptly, turning to leave. However, she stopped momentarily, her gaze
locked on Jennifer.
“Oh, by the way, is he planning to marry you?” Mae’s lips curled into a sardonic smile. “You might want to put in more effort. If that child of yours is born without a proper surname, it will be branded a
bastard.”
