Chapter 116: Isn’t This Making Things Unnecessarily Difficult?
While Mark conversed with Harry, his gaze remained fixed on Mae’s form as they entered the police station. Though Mae didn’t catch it in the moment, the sensation lingered on Mark’s back like an unsettling prick.
“Mr. Smith, this way please,” Harry directed Mark toward the Criminal Investigation Department. However, as he reached Mae’s side, he seemed to intentionally overlook her presence and continued without pause.
Contrastingly, when Mark reached Mae, he deliberately halted his stride. He cast an intentional, up–and–down glance at her before addressing Harry. “Is this Ms. Lee here to give a statement?” His words dripped with a pronounced sense of irony as the name “Ms. Lee” left his lips.
Harry momentarily froze. He had only just heard about yesterday’s suspected kidnapping case involving a car accident, which was now under the investigation of his criminal police team. He hadn’t been the one handling it, and he wasn’t even familiar with the person in question. Only upon learning of Mark’s impending arrival ten minutes prior did he rush to greet him.
Mark was a prominent taxpayer in Sofitel City, his stature and influence unmistakable. Even as the head of the criminal investigation bureau, Harry treated him with due deference.
“Yes, Mr. Smith, I didn’t anticipate causing you trouble with this matter,” Mae spoke up, noticing Harry’s hesitation and attempting to ease the situation.
However, Mark’s response carried a sneer. “Indeed, had I known it would be such a hassle, I might have refrained from getting involved yesterday.” His gaze remained fixed on Mae’s face, icy and penetrating. His words cut through the air like a frigid gust, leaving even the unacquainted Harry sensing the palpable tension between the two.
Mae’s gaze lowered, her lips pursing for a brief moment before she responded, “Nonetheless, I must express my gratitude to Mr. Smith.”
Beyond her words of gratitude, Mae struggled to find the appropriate sentiment. She was well aware of the scrutiny within Mark’s gaze, particularly after his discovery of her “true colors” yesterday. He likely found her presence repugnant.
Unbeknownst to her, the police department’s decision to summon both of them simultaneously had left her with no option but to face this confrontation head–on.
With her earlier words spoken, Mae continued her stride into the building, oblivious to the vague resurgence of pain in her ankle due to the extended walking. She grimaced and involuntarily halted her steps.
“Mr. Del Toro,” Mark’s voice broke through once more. “Arrange for a wheelchair for Ms. Lee. While I give my statement, I expect a comprehensive one from her as well. My time is limited, and I won’t wait for her to proceed slowly.”
Harry’s reaction was one of exasperation. It is said that Mark Smith lacks empathy, and it’s true that hearing a hundred times is not as good as seeing. Despite Mae’s evident foot injury, Mark’s primary concern was his own schedule. The rumors are indeed true.
“Wait a minute! Isn’t this woman Mae Lee?” Harry thought. Harry suddenly came back to his senses, his eyes snapped to Mae’s face. In the beginning, he felt that this woman looked familiar. Now that he is looking at her, his thoughts were confirmed. This is indeed Mae Lee.

But wasn’t Mae Mark’s wife? Harry thought again. Mark’s attitude contrasted sharply with how one might expect a husband to treat his wife. Instead, it resembled his behavior toward an adversary.
With what he’s seeing at this moment, it seems that the rumors are true: Mark had indeed betrayed his wife for Jennifer.
The complexity of the wealthy elite’s world left Harry lost for words. He couldn’t help but empathize with Mae, leading him to address Mark, “Mr. Smith, rest assured. Your and Ms. Lee’s statements will be taken separately, and your time won’t be compromised. Please proceed on your end, and I’ll ensure Ms. Lee’s statement is handled separately.”
Mark remained unmoving, his gaze locked onto Harry’s with an increasing chill and impatience. Harry couldn’t help but think, “Isn’t this making things unnecessarily difficult?”
The station lacked wheelchair facilities, making Harry’s predicament quite perplexing. The chaos of the situation dawned on him.
Unlike Harry, Mae understood Mark’s temperament all too well. He was notorious for his inconsistency between words and actions, and following Harry’s suggestion was unlikely. In fact, Mark’s response seemed designed to challenge her.
Aware that wheelchairs weren’t available in the police station, Mark’s directive appeared to be a deliberate push for Mae to quicken her pace and forgo any chance of rest.
Mae’s reaction wasn’t anger; she simply found Mark’s behavior not only childish but also immature. Holding onto this thought, she clenched her teeth to bear the pain and pushed herself to quicken her pace, attempting to appear as unaffected as possible by her injury.
Mark observed her as she walked away, his brow furrowing slightly. A mixture of emotions flickered in his otherwise somber, cold eyes. With a final, cold expression, he withdrew his gaze from Mae’s retreating figure and followed Harry into the building.
Beside him, Harry noticed that Mark’s pace had slowed considerably. He looked at Mark in surprise, wondering what might have caused this change. Despite the difference in pace, Mark’s demeanor remained unyielding, his cool gaze focused ahead.
Meanwhile, Mae managed to reach the transcript office, already sweating from the pain. As she settled into a chair, she took a deep breath.
“Ms. Lee, please provide a detailed account of what happened yesterday.” The transcriptor said.
“Of course,” Mae responded. Recounting the events of her departure from the hospital the previous day, she narrated the story without revealing any emotions. Her tone remained steady throughout. “Thanks to Mr. Smith’s assistance, I managed to escape.” She finished.
Mentioning Mark’s name, Mae’s tone lacked fluctuations, and she didn’t even cast a glance in his direction. However, Mark involuntarily turned his gaze toward her as he heard his name. Observing her serious demeanor as she spoke to the police, her fluttering curly eyelashes resembling delicate feathers brushing over his heart, he felt a peculiar sensation. Despite her impassive expression throughout her statement, his heart stirred.
Yet, the memory of her desperate words resurfaced, causing Mark’s expression to shift. He withdrew his gaze from Mae’s face, grappling with his emotions.
“The three suspects have all confessed that their motive was to kidnap and extort Ms. Lee due to her possession of ten billion dollars,” the police officer explained.

Chapter 716 isn’t This Making Things Unnecessanly Difficult?
Mae felt that the situation couldn’t be that straightforward. The individuals involved didn’t strike her as typical kidnappers; rather, they seemed more like skilled mercenaries.
She leaned towards the belief that someone might have hired them to abduct her or even eliminate her. The question of who could be behind it gnawed at her. Is there a person behind this? If so, then who are they? If not, then maybe she’s just overthinking things.
“Is there anything else?” she inquired, uncertain if her suspicions were valid or if she was just overthinking things.
“Our current evidence and their confessions align perfectly, without any noticeable discrepancies for now,” the officer replied.
“All right, I understand. Thank you,” Mae said, momentarily putting her doubts aside as she concluded her statement and exited the police station.
Outside, Mae took out her phone to arrange herself a ride back home when she spotted the familiar Maybach approaching slowly. The window rolled down, revealing Mark’s stern countenance.
Confusion clouded Mae’s features; hadn’t Mark left already? Why was he still here?
Seeming to sense her confusion, Mark shifted his gaze uncomfortably and, in his usual expressionless tone, instructed, “Get in the car.”
Mae hesitated, her curiosity piqued. “Is something wrong?”
Mark averted his gaze, clearly uncomfortable, and replied without emotion, “Just get in.”
With a lingering sense of uncertainty, Mae stood her ground, trying to make sense of the unexpected
turn of events.
