Chapter 102: How Dare You To Send Me Away?
Her heart quivered as she gazed at Rebecca, her voice cautious as she asked, “Auntie, what did the doctor say about the condition of the child?”
Rebecca’s expression shifted into one of difficulty, and while she wasn’t a doctor, she had a sense that Jennifer’s fall had likely jeopardized the baby’s well–being.
Dr. Martins‘ exceptional medical skills could only provide temporary stability to the fetus. The ultimate outcome could only be determined upon the child’s birth, and even then, there was no certainty.
Rebecca didn’t sugarcoat it this time and explained the situation to Jennifer, revealing, “Jennifer, listen to me. Nothing matters more than this child. You need to put aside all your work in the entertainment industry once the baby is born. With the Smith family backing you, do you still need to worry about resources? Mark will provide whatever resources you need. But if this child is lost…”
Rebecca’s words trailed off, leaving the unspoken consequence hanging in the air. Although she didn’t verbalize it, Jennifer understood the implication clearly.
In truth, she recognized deep down that she couldn’t take any more risks this time around. Her previous hesitations stemmed from a lack of achievements to showcase despite holding significant
resources.
She had intended to withdraw on her own terms, gaining recognition and even a few prestigious awards, to bolster her status as a famed actress before marrying into a wealthy family. However, the gravity of her current situation left her unwilling to take any further chances.
With her mind set, Jennifer replied, “Okay Auntie, I understand. I’ll follow your advice and focus on resting from now on.”
“That’s it, that’s the right attitude,” Rebecca said, tenderly touching Jennifer’s head. Just then, a knock resounded on the hospital room door.
“That must be Mark,” Rebecca surmised, moving to open the door. Jennifer’s eyes brightened with anticipation as they turned towards the entrance.
Soon enough, a man in a dark suit stepped into her line of sight. Jennifer’s face lit up, but before she could greet him, Rebecca’s voice cut in, filled with irritation and disdain.
“Mae, what the hell are you doing here?”
Jennifer’s smile froze instantaneously. Mae stood there with an air of indifference, resembling a mistress who had broken up a family and insolently arrived to provoke a confrontation. At this moment, Mae appeared unperturbed by Rebecca’s fury. She glanced at Mark, her tone cool and detached, “When you asked me to come here, did you even bother greeting your family beforehand?”
The phrase “your family” starkly delineated the separation between herself and Mark, emphasizing her position as an outsider.
Mark’s brow furrowed slightly, although he recognized the underlying tension between the two women, he had no authority to reprimand Mae for her matter–of–fact demeanor. His glance at Mae contained both annoyance and an acknowledgment that their relationship had shifted drastically.
Mark addressed Rebecca, his voice tinged with frustration, “I brought her here to see Jennifer.”

Rebecca, unwilling to back down, her disdain evident, only spared a glance at Mae, “What does she need to see here? Did she come to gloat at Jennifer’s state?”
Growing increasingly impatient and agitated, Mark didn’t have the tolerance to explain further. He grabbed Mae’s wrist, leading her into the hospital room without delay.
Jennifer’s anticipation of Mark’s visit was shattered by his unexpected company, Mae Lee. Her heart sank, and a fleeting moment of spiteful viciousness flitted across her eyes. She quickly masked her emotions, resuming her serene and fragile demeanor, and greeted, “Mae, are you here to visit me? Thank you for your concern.”
Unlike Rebecca, Jennifer didn’t overtly reject Mae, as there were no apparent conflicts between them, at least on the surface.
Mae, on the other hand, didn’t intend to engage in superficial pleasantries. She spoke directly, “Mr. Smith invited me to provide treatment for you.”
Jennifer struggled to maintain her smile; she felt as though Mae was slyly insinuating that she was unwell. Despite her suspicions, she maintained her composed facade and responded, “Mae, I’m sorry, I don’t quite understand what you just said.”
Uninterested in wasting time with Jennifer, Mae shifted her gaze to Mark, a gesture that made it clear he was meant to explain.
Mark regarded her with a mixture of amusement and resignation. It seemed that this woman had grown weary of putting on a pretense in front of him. She even dared to send him forth as her spokesperson.
Mark paid little mind to the unfolding drama before him and instead focused his gaze on Jennifer, his tone casual as he said, “I’m the one who asked Mae to come and take care of your pregnancy. Just cooperate with her the whole time.”
Jennifer cannot maintain her initially warm expression and shifted to one of incredulous confusion, her voice betraying her disbelief, “What… what do you mean?”
She couldn’t help but think Mark was playing a prank. She found the idea of Mae, who was far from being a skilled actress, responsible for her fetus utterly ridiculous. Internally, she was screaming, questioning Mae’s competence and placing her below even Dr. Martins.
Suppressing her urge to lash out, Jennifer forced a smile, trying to save Mae from embarrassment. “Mark, you… you must be joking, right? Mae isn’t a doctor. How could she…”
Jennifer trailed off, her lips tightly sealed as she avoided directly ridiculing Mae.
Rebecca stepped forward, creating a barrier between Mae and Jennifer. Addressing Mark, she unleashed her frustration, “Mark, what kind of delusion has this woman put in your head? She took money from us and delivered nothing. Now that Jennifer’s pregnancy is at risk, you’ve brought her here for medical treatment. Aren’t you worried she might harm the child? In my opinion…”
Mark’s patience had worn thin, his face darkening as he cut her off, “Mom, that’s enough.”
“Wh–what…y–you,‘ Rebecca was left sputtering, her anger barely contained.
Meanwhile, Mae lounged in a chair with a nonchalant expression, hands in her pockets, thoroughly amused by the unfolding spectacle.
Rebecca’s agitation only fueled Mae’s amusement. “Mae, who said you could sit down?” she
snapped, her frustration clear. Rebecca had grown so accustomed to Mae’s overbearing demeanor that she momentarily forgot Mark’s presence. In the past, Mae would have promptly obeyed Rebecca’s orders, but now… who the hell does she think she is to order her around?
Mae raised an eyebrow lazily, retorting, “Do I need your permission?”
“You…” Rebecca’s features twisted in response to Mae’s defiance. The memory of their last encounter, when Mae had driven her to the brink of fury, resurfaced. She couldn’t fathom how Mae could maintain such audacity even in front of her son.
Seizing the moment, Rebecca turned to Mark and lamented, “Mark, look at how Mae treats me, her mother–in–law, and yet you still haven’t divorced her. You…”
“Enough,” Mark cut in sharply, interrupting Rebecca’s tirade and fixing his gaze on her with
impatience.
Rebecca’s words were silenced, her anger and disappointment evident. Mark’s command was enough to halt the verbal battle that had been escalating. The room was momentarily engulfed in a heavy silence.
