Chapter 101: What Are You Pretending to Do When You Have An Illegitimate Child?
“The divorce now has a one–month cooling–off period…”
As the staff’s words gradually faded, a subtle yet unmistakable spark ignited deep within Mark’s eyes. In the ensuing heartbeat, Mae interjected with her distinctive voice, injecting a touch of wry humor, “We have cooled off for four years.”
The staff member blinked a few times at Mae’s statement. Why did it seem like Mae was even more enthusiastic about the divorce than Mark?
Only a few days ago, the internet was abuzz with reports about Jennifer’s accident that leads to her having a miscarriage. Despite her PR agency’s vehement denial, the crimson stain on her legs told a different story.
Clearly, that audacious mistress was exploiting the situation to pressure Mark into divorcing Mae. Ugh, what a scumbag of a man entangled with a mistress!
The staff member intentionally shot a sidelong glance at Mark, noticing the unwavering gravity etched on his face throughout. To an outsider, it would seem like he was reluctant to embrace the divorce.
‘Oh, come on! The mistress is identified, and the illegitimate child is confirmed–why bother pretending? Let’s get this divorce sorted. Those against it can just face the music. Who cares about the cooling–off period anyway? the staff member thought.
A surge of righteous determination coursed through the staff member, unyielding in his resolve. In less than ten minutes, both divorce procedures were sealed and done.
As the estranged couple left the Civil Affairs Bureau, the staff member couldn’t shake the feeling that Mark had sent him a dagger–eyed glare.
Outside the bureau, Mae’s gaze fell on the dark red divorce certificate she held in her hand. She let out a sigh, a whirlwind of relief and emotions engulfing her. It was as if she’d been carrying an immense weight on her shoulders for so long, and today, that burden was finally lifted.
All the pent–up frustrations towards Mark seemed to evaporate into thin air. It was as though this day marked the dissolution of lingering grievances, and between her and Mark, a relationship that had once been intricately woven together transformed into a mere acquaintance. “Goodbye, Mr. Smith.” She said.
Mark’s eyes locked onto Mae’s, a desperate search for any inkling of regret or hesitation. Unfortunately, he found none.
Those eyes remained as serene as a placid lake, devoid of affection, bitterness, or animosity as if their past connection seemed to have vanished into thin air.
Watching Mae step away from him, Mark’s heart pounded as if he were losing an irreplaceable treasure. His hand reached out instinctively, only to grasp emptiness. Staring at his outstretched hand, panic and anguish surged through him.
“Mae…”
He couldn’t help but call out, his voice quivering with emotion. Mae was just about to enter her car, her fingers resting on the door handle, when Mark’s voice reached her ears. She turned, meeting his gaze, her eyes calm and curious.

In the midst of Mark’s silence, a slight crease formed between Mae’s brows. “Mr. Smith?”
Mark lowered his gaze, struggling to rein in the tumultuous emotions swirling within him. Finally, he found his voice, his tone a mix of vulnerability and urgency, “Remember your promise to me.”
“Rest assured, Mr. Smith. You’ve fulfilled your end of the bargain, and I intend to honor mine.”
A faint smile graced Mae’s lips. With those words, she slipped into the car. The silver–white sedan pulled away smoothly, seemingly carefree. It was as if Mae had vanished from his life, never to be seen again.
Moments before obtaining the divorce certificate, Mark had clung to a fragment of self–delusion, convincing himself that Mae wouldn’t truly walk away. But reality, dealt him a brutal blow in the face.
He stared at the red divorce certificate in his hand, its presence growing increasingly piercing. The arrogance and confidence he had felt after what he perceived as a hard–won battle shattered the instant Mae accepted the certificate and moved away.
“Are you two really… really divorced?”
Jean’s eyes widened as she caught sight of the dark red certificate in Mae’s hand, a hint of disbelief lingering in her expression.
“That stubborn guy dragged his feet multiple times before. Why the sudden change of heart?” Jean’s tone carried a mix of bewilderment and skepticism.
Mae tucked the divorce certificate away before explaining, her demeanor nonchalant, “He asked me to ensure the child in Jennifer’s womb remains. I used the divorce as leverage in negotiations, and he agreed.”
Mae’s words were delivered with an air of ease, as though discussing a matter far removed from herself, leaving Jean all the more puzzled.
“What… What? Keeping Jennifer’s child? Why am I not getting this?” Jean’s brows furrowed as she looked at Mae, his confusion evident.
Mae reached for her cell phone, tapped on the Twitter, opened the viral video featuring the Divine Doctor, and turned the screen to Jean.
“It’s me,” she affirmed.
Jean stared at Mae, her amazement evident. After a momentary silence, she managed to stammer out, “Your ex–husband actually believed that?”
Mae nodded, her response devoid of any exaggeration. Jean’s disbelief shifted to astonishment as she pointed at the video that had garnered massive views, “So the Divine Doctor who looks uncannily like you in the text is actually you?”
Mae had no reason to hide the truth from Jean and confirmed her suspicion with a nod.
Jean’s bewilderment deepened, and she scrutinized Mae as if trying to ascertain whether this revelation was indeed true.
Then, with a sudden burst of enthusiasm, she pulled Mae into a tight hug. “Mae! So, you’ve been secretly accomplishing things behind my back all these years, and now you’re just showing them to me?”

Mae chuckled and responded, “Yes, and that’s why I’m single now. Have you ever considered transforming into a man and marrying me?”
Jean shot her a sidelong glance, her retort laced with playful sarcasm, “Do you really have to be so fixated on gender?”
At Hedwer van Duranstrom Advanced Private Hospital…
“How are you, dear? Are you feeling better? You really gave Auntie quite a scare back there,” Rebecca’s voice was laced with concern as she looked at the awakened Jennifer, patting her head gently.
Jennifer managed a somewhat reluctant smile, her expression still carrying a touch of seriousness. Her gaze wandered toward the hospital room entrance now and then, and she softly inquired, “Auntie, did Mark come for me?”
Rebecca’s expression tightened subtly, and she replied, “He visited you while you were still in a
coma.”
Jennifer, with her current state, couldn’t quite point out if Rebecca were just trying to comfort her or if Mark had genuinely visited. Despite this uncertainty, her frown remained.
With a tentative voice, she continued, “Auntie, did Mark blame me for not protecting the child?”
Rebecca’s expression faltered briefly, though Jennifer was too preoccupied to notice. The image of her son’s sharp and assertive demeanor flashed before her eyes, slightly unsettling her.
However, she assured Jennifer, her words intended to soothe, “You didn’t do anything intentionally. How could Mark blame you? Don’t overthink it. Just focus on resting and recovering. Your well–being is what matters most.”
Jennifer’s anxieties lessened upon hearing that Mark didn’t hold her responsible. She let her hand rest on her slightly protruding belly, silently praying that this child would remain unharmed.
While others might not fully understand, she was acutely aware that this child was her only bargaining chip to stand her ground in front of Mark.
Without this child, she…she…
Jennifer couldn’t bring herself to finish that thought.
