Chapter 73
He was standing by the bed, hands stuffed into his pockets, his handsome but aloof face seemed especially eye-catching under the light. He was quietly staring at me.
After a while, he said, “I don’t know.”
I was stunned, then I started laughing uncontrollably. My laughter echoed in the bedroom. Gradually, I felt the corners of my eyes getting wet and breathing became a bit difficult.
I thought it was hilarious I wiped away the tears from the corners of my eyes, then looked up at him, “I really didn’t expect that answer from you. Suitor, sl ave, wife in name, a tool for a business marriage… I have so many roles, and you couldn’t think of a single one? Neil, you’re really selfish If you don’t love me, let me go, then you can pursue the woman you truly love. Even without the support of my family, your status won’t be affected. I’ve loved you for ten years. Those should have been the best years of a woman’s life. Even if you don’t love me, you should let me leave with dignity. Why is your heart so cold? Why do you have to push me into a corner?”
I got more and more emotional as I spoke. Ever since I was reborn, I’ve been trying to calm myself down. I wanted to get out of this hopeless marriage as soon as possible, not wanting to get hurt anymore.
But I couldn’t even manage to leave. I could only watch as things got worse. I felt like a total loser.
I abruptly grabbed a book from the bedside table and hurled it at Neil’s face. He didn’t dodge, his face just darkened, as if he was repressing his anger.
I then grabbed a pillow and started beating him up on the bed, cursing non-stop, “Neil, you’re an as shole! You’ll get what’s coming to you! You’ve been worried about Dean’s illness these days, haven’t you? You left me at your home for days. Did you even remember to pick me up? If you’re so into Bonnie, why are you wasting my time?! Divorce!! I want a divorce!!”
I was in a hysterical state, just like in my past life.
Only then, I was desperately trying to hold onto Neil, refusing to agree to a divorce.
Enough” Neil finally lost his patience. He sna tched the pillow from my hand, threw it on the ground, his eyes filled with anger, “You really want a divorce? Then let’s divorce! I’ll have the divorce papers ready!”
With that, he stormed out of the bedroom.
I did want a divorce, but when I heard Neil agree to it, I felt a piece of my heart go empty. That feeling of unwillingness surged again. I forced myself to
calm down.
Wasn’t this the purpose of my rebirth? To divorce gracefully, let him pursue what he wanted, and free myself.
I took a deep breath, laid back down on the bed, and tried to clear my mind.
The next day when I got to the hospital, Dean’s room was empty.
I thought they changed ward. Neil had always been quick on his feet.
“Rena, you don’t need to come see me every day. There’s a dedicated caretaker here now. You don’t need to worry about me.” My mom put down her phone and said when she saw me walk in.
“Whether I’m worried or not, I want to come see you. After all, you’re my mom.” I sat down, holding her hand, wanting to tell her about my upcoming divorce, but didn’t know how to bring it up.
She smiled and said, “What a good girl I have. It’d be even better if you could give me a grandchild soon.”
Hearing this, I hesitated even more. If Neil and I divorced, I didn’t know when she could have a grandchild.
I was also worried she’d try to persuade me not to divorce. Although my parents didn’t have a good impression of Neil before, now that we’re married, they might still hope for me to stick to the marriage.
Older generation tend to have a more traditional understanding of marriage. They don’t really accept divorce as a solution.
“Let’s just let nature take its course.” I was about to bring up the divorce, but changed my words.
“Your in-laws must also hope that you two have kids soon.” She continued, “You and Neil are both only children, it’s kind of lonely. It’d be great if you could have two kids. If your in-laws and I get bored, each family can take care of one.”
“Mom, are you treating my future kids as time-killers?” I asked with a laugh.
She happily said, “Te that how it is? When your grandma was bored at home, I’d send you over to keep her company. She was really happy.”
We chatted casually in the hospital room, soon we were talking about Geneva again. I told her I had hired a private investigator to look into it. She was supportive
For abnormal people, we need to take abnormal measures.
At noon, left the hospital room. It was lunch time for everyone else, so there were a lot of people at the elevator. I got squeezed into the corner.
The elevator went down two floors 1 heard a familiar voice, “Doctor, I’m counting on you for my father’s surgery. We’ve been really grateful for your care these past few days. If you have time, I’d like to invite you to dinner”
Bonnie and Russel were standing a bit in front of me, with a few people between us.
She was fully engrossed in talking to Russel, not noticing me in the corner. Russel, on the other hand, spotted me right away and gave me a nod
Tim just doing what I’m supposed to. There’s no need to thank me Russel’s cold voice echoed in the elevator.
“You’re the most responsible and meticulous doctor I’ve ever met, so I want to thank you’ Bonnie was standing shoulder to shoulder with Russel. Because the elevator was too crowded, Bonnie was tilting her head to look at Russel as she spoke.

“It’s not necessary. The person you should be thanking might not be me.” Russel was still cold.
I was a bit puzzled. Wasn’t he supposed to be interested in Bonnie? Why was he showing no reaction to her advances now?
While I was lost in my thoughts, the elevator stopped again and again, finally reaching the first floor. Bonnie followed the crowd out of the elevator to the hospital cafeteria for lunch. Russel and I didn’t leave, but continued to the underground parking lot.
It was just the two of us left in the elevator. After we got to the underground parking level, he turned to me and said, “What are you thinking about? Why aren’t you getting off?”
Only then did I snap out of it and realize he had been holding the door open button this whole time.
“Thank you!” I hastily thanked him and walked out of the elevator. Russel was right behind me.
“Fancy grabbing a bite?” Just as I was about to hop in my car, he sidles up next to me, asking me to join him for dinner, “Mitch and Cooper have reserved the seats. The food in that restaurant tastes good.”
This was a surprise. Why wasn’t he dining with Bonnie instead? Why was he inviting me?
Plus, I’m not tight with Mitch and Cooper. In their eyes, I’m the roadblock standing in Neil’s way to happiness. I’m the one who played the family connections card from the get–go, that was on me.
I wasn’t up for it, so I turned his invitation down.
