I had a rebellious heart, but Neil’s gaze made it impossible for me to say no.
Even a stranger should lend a hand to a sick patient.
I took a few steps, holding Neil’s arm and using my body as support, helping him to the ward step by step.
Neil had slimmed down a bit recently, but he was still a tall guy, and his body was not light. I was leaning a bit, but I dared not let go.
Because Neil smoked a lot, his hospital gown smelled strongly of smoke, so I couldn’t help turning my head to cough a couple of times
I lost strength in my legs accidentally, and with most of Neil’s weight on me, I couldn’t stand steady
Neil seemed to anticipate that I would fall because of my distraction. He quickly let go of me and fell forward himself, but the accident still happened since I was also pulled forward by his falling force
“Ouch…” When I fell on Neil, I heard him gasp
I tried to scramble up in a panic, only to land my hand on his stomach. He twitched his brow and glared at me, “Are you trying to kill your ex-husband?!”
A kind-hearted nurse came over. She helped me up first, then, along with me, helped Neil, who was pale with pain, up and sent him to the ward.
I should’ve left then, but out of guilt, i decided to stick around and see how things were.
The nurse checked Neil, gave him some medication, and gave him some advice.
“If you don’t like the hospital food, I can bring you some when I go home! The nurse said while blushing a bit..
“No need.” Neil replied coldly
The nurse left awkwardly, and seeing that Neil was okay, I decided to leave too
Neil, lying in bed, asked me, “Are you going to worsen my condition and then leave? What if your fall and push left me with lingering effects?”
I was speechless. “Wasn’t it you who asked me to help you?”
He looked at me with a hint of mischief in his eyes, “You could have refused to help me, but in the end, you made things worse, and that’s your responsibility”
“Neil, don’t push it. If you keep this up, even if you were dying in front of me, I wouldn’t help you” I replied, frowning.
Neil managed to laugh. He turned slightly in bed, then replied, “Shouldn’t you stomp on my corpse a couple of times to let out some pent-up anger?”
“I’m not you, I’m not that sick? I checked my watch, “I have things to do, you rest.”
As I was about to leave, I heard Neil’s shameless request, “Help me get a bowl of bolete mushroom soup.”
I turned my head and saw a bowl of bolete mushroom soup on the bedside table that had been brought by Kitty
“Just eat that one” I pointed at the bolete mushroom soup on the table and told Neil.
Neil glanced at the soup on the table and replied matter-of-factly. It’s cold. The bolete mushroom soup cools too quickly I have a stomach problem and need to eat hot food”
He was uncooperative with medication and rest before, and now he suddenly knew that he had a stomach problem and couldn’t eat cold food. I had every reason to suspect that Neil was deliberately causing me trouble..
I wouldn’t indulge him. Then don’t eat it. You mess with yourself every day; a bowl of bolete mushroom soup won’t make you better.”
Neil asked discontentedly. “Shouldn’t you compensate for the harm you just did to me?”

Just as I was about to argue, another nurse came in. She saw the bolete mushroom soup on the table, felt it, and said to me, “How could you let him drink such cold bolete mushroom soup? Patients must eat warm and easily digestible food. The shops outside should still be open, you should go check”
Neil was eyeing me, waiting for my response.
I was speechless for a moment, and under the nurse’s urging, I had to go outside the hospital to buy a bowl of soup.
When I returned to Neil’s ward with the bolete mushroom soup, he had already sat up in front of the hospital bed, one hand receiving an IV, and the other scrolling on his phone.
When he saw me carrying the bolete mushroom soup, he seemed quite pleased, and a smirk appeared on his lips.
Thanded him the bolete mushroom soup expressionlessly. “Drink it while it’s hot.”
He looked at the unopened box, then at his Ved hand. “Help me open it and set it up, will you?”
Suppressing my reluctance, I opened the small table on the bed, then opened and arranged the bolele mushroom soup, finally taking a deep breath, “Is that alright?”
Nell put down his phone, picked up the spoon, and started drinking the bolete mushroom soup. He casually responded, “One more thing”
I was puzzled, what else could he want now?
After drinking a few mouthfuls of the bolete mushroom soup, Neil looked up at me, “Even though I promised you that I wouldn’t bother you again, since today you came to me first, I can now tell you that the repair estimate is out from when you hit my car before”
I almost forgot about that. Indeed, I still owed him compensation.
“Alright, I’ll transfer it to you when the time comes.” I answered readily.
Then I left. I had to check on my mom and instruct the caregiver.
Neil let me go this time without saying anything else. When I got to my mom’s ward, the caregiver was already prepared to rest on the companion bed.
I instructed the caregiver, chatted with my mom for a while, and then left for home.
I had discussed with the doctor about bringing my mom home for care. I was planning to take her back when my dad retired.
But I didn’t expect my dad to get into bigger trouble before we could settle my mom at home.
“Rena, something’s wrong!”
The day before my dad’s birthday, I was at work when Stella called me in a panic, “Your dad is in trouble; he’s been taken away!”
I was flustered. I had no idea what she meant, “What do you mean?”
Stella briefly explained to me what had happened. Apparently, someone had reported my dad for improper relationships and abuse of power.
This had made the news, and the higher-ups had already issued an announcement.
I had been busy with work these past few days and hadn’t been keeping up with the news. Plus, my dad had always been a man of good character; how could he have inappropriate relationships and abuse his power?
I hastily arranged my work, then called my dad
I’m okay; you focus on your work and take care of your mom.” My dad’s voice seemed to have aged a lot. He said this and hung up. When I called back, it was already unreachable.
Soon enough, word got out that my old man was in some kinda trouble. Folks started ringing me up to ask about what was going on, but honestly, I was pretty much in the dark myself.
