Soon, everyone started talking about other things, and I heard something about Zora
Cooper’s family was pushing him to get married, telling him to try and woo Zora, who also attended last night’s dance. Apparently. Neil had gone with
him.
“She’s way too popular, I don’t want to compete with other men” Cooper said.
“Haha, you don’t have to compete, according to reliable sources, Zora falls for Neil. Some foreign websites even reported last year that she had a crush on Neil.” Stella replied
1 know, I can’t beat Neil. Plus, ever since Zora became Abner’s adopted daughter two years ago, she’s famous, but she’s never shown her face. What if she’s ugly?” Cooper shrugged. “I heard she’s here with a $200 million investment, but even if she brought $20 billion, I wouldn’t go after her.”
He was obviously a man who cared about the appearance. I listened for a while and then stepped out for some fresh air. Soon, Cooper followed me out.
His face was red and he said a bit awkwardly, “Irene, I misunderstood you two years ago, I apologize,*
“What?” I was surprised, “It’s all good, Cooper.”
Mainly because Cooper’s misunderstanding didn’t cause me much trouble.
He didn’t purposely make things difficult for me. Besides his words that upset me back then, everything else was really no big deal.
Cooper let out a sigh of relief, Thanks, I should’ve apologized to you earlier, but I was too embarrassed. Today seemed like a good opportunity.”
“Hahaha, yeah, it’s a good day indeed.” I started laughing.
At noon, a feast of seafood was served. As I filled my belly and listened to everyone’s laughter, I felt blissfully happy.
Then, a huge cake was brought out and Mitch blew out the candles with his wife and kids by his side.
His face was full of smiles, he had truly become a good man.
I envied their married life, which was once my own dream.
By the time I left Stella’s house, it was already evening. She asked me to stay for dinner but I wanted to visit Oscar at the hospital.
I rushed to the hospital in Stella’s car. Oscar looked a bit better today, young people recover quickly.
“Irene, when did you get back? How come I didn’t know?” Oscar asked me a bit disappointed, “Didn’t you get the messages I sent you? You never replied.”
“I got back the night I ran into you at the bar,” I sighed, “I got all your messages but I didn’t know how to reply, so I didn’t.”
“I get it, you probably think I still have strong feelings for you and you didn’t want to respond, right?” Oscar seemed a bit helpless, “I do like you, I still like you a lot, but I know we can’t be together. Can I try to see you as my sister?”
I widened my eyes, then nodded, “Okay, from now on you’re my little brother. Don’t worry, I’ll treat you to good food, drink, and life’s pleasures!”
Oscar started laughing.
I didn’t leave the hospital until 9 p.m., my mood very heavy
Because Oscar had just told me some things about Bonnie.
He and Bonnie used to be together and knew each other’s circle of friends very well, much more than Stella and the others knew about Bonnie.
Two years ago, Bonnie was rushed to the hospital. While she survived, her parents tragically died in a car accident on their way to the hospital soon after. Bonnie was left to live off the money from selling her parents‘ house and had to leave Rosemont.
She had only Kate and Malinda left, and after that, they lost all contact with her.
I didn’t expect Ada and Dean to have died in a car accident. In my past life, they were doing well, they even owned a bar and lived a very prosperous life.
Did Neil know about these things? I think he might have known that Kate cared so much about Bonnie that she would have gone to Neil. From the result after Bonnie disappeared from Rosemont, Neil didn’t show any sympathy. He seemed to let her fend for herself.
But all of this was none of my business now. I just felt sorry for Ada and Dean’s death.
Bonnie seemed to be quite an extreme existence for them. She either leaded them to the peak or to their death.
Lost in thought, I drove to the Zion Chemical Plant. The project here was underway.
The small building where the Tueley family once lived has been leveled, now only excavators parked on it.
Things were different, I couldn’t help but sighed. Just as I was about to leave, a group of people walked towards the construction site.
The man leading the group was wearing a flashy jacket, had shaved his head clean, and despite being in his forties or fifties, he dressed like a teenager His face was ferocious looking, and he was followed by a group of young men who looked like they were up to no good.
I checked the time. It was already past eleven. What were they doing at Whitmore Co’s project site?
The site should have already closed for the day, only a few people would be on duty in the temporary work huts. If these guys were here to cause trouble. then it was going to be a big deal.
Only a few lights were on in the temporary work huts not far away, indicating not many people were there.
Suddenly, the group stopped near my car. My car was already turned off and the window was only slightly open for ventilation.
Before they noticed me, I tried to duck as much as possible to avoid being seen.
“You go in and start making a fuss, say that those guys hurt your brother. If they don’t compensate us, we won’t let them off” The middle–aged man who led the way spoke
“Okay, Finn. I promise I’ll give it my all!” A man next to him answered.
I remembered what Alicia had said about a guy named “Finn‘ being the local boss. Could it be this bald man outside?
He was bold enough to cause trouble on the Whitmore family’s site. What nerve!
“The Whitmore family was a tough opponent! I have not received any benefits from them, which makes me very undignified. Let’s go in. Anyone tries to call the cops, snatch their phone!” Finn spat out, face red with rage.
Only when the commotion outside died down did I sit up straight, frowning at the workshop in the near distance.
After a moment’s hesitation, I called the police and shot a text to Stella, asking her to pass the message to Mitch, who would then alert Neil.
I figured if I didn’t call the police, things could get ugly today. The few guys on shift wouldn’t stand a chance against these thugs.
Stella called back quickly. After I filled her in on what was going on, she said, “Got it, Mitch’s getting in touch with Neil, get out of there, it’s not safe.”
*Alright, I’m on my way I didn’t want to hang around here any longer. My being here today was just a spur–of–the–moment thing.
