Chapter $22
After ending his call with Celeste, Shawn tumed to Helen and asked her if she was pregnant.
Helen was taken aback Where did you hear that?”
Shawn felt her reaction was a bit off, so he decided not to spill the beans, “A colleague mentioned seeing you in the hospital’s maternity ward.”
Helen had planned to have an abortion this week, but before she could, Shawn was already onto her. If she denied being pregnant, Shawn would be suspicious and definitely have someone investigate. If he found out she was lying, things would gel messy
With that in mind, Helen hesitated.
“I am pregnant.”
Shawn was shocked. It took them years to conceive Jacques. His sperm count was lower than average, and he didn’t think he could father another child. He didn’t expect Helen to be pregnant again.
Thinking about becoming a father again, he immediately helped Helen up. “Why didn’t you tell me about this?”
“I didn’t want to keep it from you. I just didn’t plan on keeping the baby” Helen looked somewhat worried
“What did you say?” Shawn frowned
“When I went to the hospital for a checkup, the doctor said my fetus is unstable. My blood sugar and blood pressure are high, so childbirth could be risky”
“Which doctor said that? How many hospitals did you go to? Are their diagnoses accurate?”
“It was the best hospital in town, they wouldn’t misdiagnose.”
“I know a friend whose wife also had a baby at forty. They said it was risky, but the child is very healthy now. Doctors always like to exaggerate problems”
Helen didn’t actually want the baby, she was lying on purpose. But Shawn’s words chilled her. In his eyes, having a baby was more important than his wife’s safety All she could do was swallow her discomfort
“I really want another child, but the doctor said that older mothers have a higher chance of having babies with birth defects. I’m really worried..
Sure enough, once the possibility of a baby with birth defects was mentioned, Shawn started to waver
He thought for a moment, “Let’s go see a few specialists in a couple of days. If there’s really a problem with the baby, then we’ll have the abortion.”
Helen reluctantly agreed.
“By the way,” Shawn asked her, “Where did you put the property certificate for Caitlyn’s old house?”
“It’s in the safe at home. What do you need it for?”
“Nothing, you just need to keep it safe.”
Helen responded, “The payment period for Jacques trust fund is coming soon. Remember to transfer the money in the next few days.”
Shawn frowned, “Another payment? What’s the use of this trust fund? We might as well not pay it.”
“I’ve been paying insurance for several years. If I stop now, won’t I be at a loss? This money is for Jacques‘ future. If he gets sick or wants to start a business, won’t this money come in handy? Besides, is this money more than what you spent on treating Caitlyn? Celeste’s piano alone is more expensive…
