Chapter 328
David knew what was up he’s been around the block and learned how to read people.
He’s almost ninety, quite old, and most of his children have passed away, leaving only one disabled child.
As his children departed, the bond with his grandchildren also weakened over time. Having resided in his hometown for many years, he rarely received visits. However, as soon as his relocation compensation arrived, a swarm of “devoted sons and grandkids” suddenly appeared at his bedside.
How could he not know what these people were thinking? Weren’t they just eyeing the compensation money he got from the relocation?
At his age, he no longer cared about money.
He knew that once he gave away the money, if he got sick–hardly anyone would visit him.
When you’re old and unable to help your offspring, you gradually become a burden.
As long as he had money, every time he wanted to go to J City, his grandchildren would help him. Everyone followed his wishes, all for his money. David watched TV in his sickbed with other patients. Everyone was discussing the case, and when he saw Celeste’s face on the screen, he suddenly wanted to see his long–lost great–granddaughter.
She was different from the others. She wouldn’t let him eat sweets, controlled his smoking and drinking, and worried about him catching a cold at night and would turn on the air conditioning for him.
She was still the thoughtful little girl who would exaggerate how good the sweets tasted, even if she didn’t like them, just to avoid upsetting
others.
Celeste held back tears, her voice hoarse, “I’ll make sure the Reed family gives you an explanation.”
David waved his hand, “What’s the point in arguing with an ill–mannered girl?”
Saying this, he grabbed her hand, stuffed the passbook back in, and said, “Quickly hide this so your uncle and aunt don’t see it.”
Outside the door, Latonia tiptoed to peek inside.
The bed curtains blocked the view, and she couldn’t see what was happening inside, pacing back and forth like ants on a hot pan.
Another relative was also anxious but didn’t want to peek through the door, so she turned to Shawn instead.
“Shawn, what did the doctor say, can grandpa’s body handle it?”
Shawn frowned, “He had a bad fall, and he probably needs to rest in bed for a while.”
“How long will he need to stay in the hospital?”
“It depends on his recovery.”
Upon hearing this, Latonia immediately turned around, “See? I said we shouldn’t come to this hospital. Look at the doctors, their answers are unclear. What does it depends on his recovery‘ mean? So grandpa has to stay here as long as he’s not comfortable? Who’s paying for the hospital bills?”
Everyone looked at each other, no one spoke.
With the generation gap, there wasn’t much closeness. Everyone knew why they were here.
While performing small favors to appease David was one thing, when it came to parting with their money, everyone tightly clutched their wallets, hesitant to spend.
Being hospitalized costs a lot of money, possibly hundreds per day, and even more for nutritional supplements. It could easily cost thousands or even tens of thousands.
Even if they spent the money, there was no guarantee the old man would like them. Who knows who he’d give his compensation money to?
