Chapter 177
The maid hadn’t finished, Skyler’s voice came through the phone, and then Skyler took over.
“It’s Mr. Reed, asking about the truffles…”
There was silence on the other end for a few seconds, and then Skyler got on the line, “Just two boxes of truffles, does it need to be brought up non-stop at home? What do you plan to do after figuring things out? Call the police and arrest someone? You’re great at tattling, but not much else! Even if the truffles arrived, I wouldn’t have accepted them! You should spend your time taking care of your wife, and tell her stop favoring others now that she’s part of the Reed family!”
With that, she hung up.
Liam held the phone, saying nothing for a while.
Celeste sighed with relief. He didn’t lie to her, and that was good.
She said softly. “Let it go. I didn’t want to send them in the first place, and now I don’t have to worry about it.”
Liam’s Adam’s apple bobbed, and after a while, he asked quietly. “Does it hurt?”
Celeste was startled, then realized he was asking about her cheek. All her grievances welled up in her heart, her eyes reddened, afraid to cry, she quickly diverted her gaze, trying hard to suppress her sadness, feigning nonchalance, “He’s my father, do you think he’d use much force?”
Actually, it hurt quite a bit. Shawn’s slap had used almost all his strength, and her face seemed a bit swollen now, but she didn’t want to tell Liam. She was afraid of his disappointment, and she didn’t want his casual remarks to make her fragile.
After dropping them off at home, Owen left.
The maid came to help, but Liam avoided her hand and said flatly. “Draw a bath for me, I want to take one.”
Celeste said, “The doctor said my wound can’t touch water.”
Liam paused, “You can help me wash later then.”
“This isn’t a good idea.”
Liam glanced at her, “We’ve bathed together before, what’s the problem?”
Celeste thought of their past encounters in the bathroom and her ears turned red, “It’s different now!”
“What’s so different? I got hurt because of you, you should take some responsibility, right?”
Celeste was left speechless.
Because Liam’s words had touched her guilt deep inside.
It was just a bath, Celeste told herself, it was not like they were doing anything else. They’d been honest with each other many times, what was there to be nervous about?
With his body like that, she thought she’d seen it all, giving him a bath was as normal as bathing a kitten or a puppy.
Twenty minutes later, Celeste stared at Liam’s strong back, her fingers trembling nervously.
How could bathing him be compared to bathing a kitten or a puppy? Who would watch the process of bathing a pet so intently?
Liam’s hands were propped on both sides of the bathtub, water droplets slid down his cheeks, past his Adam’s apple, and finally dripped into the water.
He turned his head and looked at her indifferently, his eyes deep and clear, “Aren’t you undressing?”
Celeste watched him cautiously. “What are you trying to do?”
Liam looked at her as if she was a fool, “Your clothes are wet, and it’ll be hard to take them off later. Go change into something thinner.”
“No need. I feel safer dressed like this”
