Celeste kept her poker face on, cautiously asking, “If we throw in some cash, how much could we get?”
“That depends on how much she’s willing to offer.”
Celeste started to do the math, “So, any amount will do?”
Mrs. Kelley replied, “What are you thinking? Skyler’s been kicked out by the Reed family, and Liam’s cut off her spending. She’s barely scraping by to maintain her lifestyle.”
She added, “You think Skyler would just give away her money like that? The moment someone asks for a sumn, she’d see it as extortion. You’d not only end up empty–handed, but you could also end up behind bars.
Mrs. Kelley once again asked, “Do you know or not? Just tell me something to deal with her.”
Celeste said, “The person she’s looking for is actually me.”
“What?”
Mrs. Kelley started to doubt her hearing.
Celeste briefly mentioned the events of that night, which made Mrs. Kelley laugh, “Skyler must have pissed you off in a past life, and you’re here for payback. She got kicked out because of you. Mason is also involved with you. If she knew, she’d probably drop
dead from shock.”
Celeste’s eyelid twitched, “I was just trying to help her.”
Mrs. Kelley said, “Regardless, she’s on the hunt for you now. Be careful not to let her find out it’s you. If she does, all hell will break loose. She may take it out on you.”
Celeste scoffed, “Do you think I’m scared of her?”
Mrs. Kelley calmly said, “If you don’t plan on getting back with Liam, then it doesn’t matter how you deal with her. But if you do, you can’t be too harsh on her. If Liam chooses to protect you, he may be seen as unfilial. He might not care about the gossip for a day or two, but what about ten or twenty years? He may grow to resent you. So you must leave her some room to breathe, for Liam’s sake.”
Celeste was silent for a moment, then said, “I’m surprised you could actually come up with that.”
The corner of Mrs. Kelley’s mouth twitched.
“I heard your husband is quite popular.”
Mrs. Kelley scoffed, “Popular, my foot! How many people even know him? I dragged in at least 70% of those votes!”
Bryce Kelley was not well–liked. He was arrogant with his superiors yet not favored by them, and he was dissatisfied with their ways. He seemed indifferent on the surface, but he often complained about his colleagues‘ incompetence or connections behind the scenes. He was nit–picky with his subordinates, demanding they work overtime for any task, and often flexed his authority. How could such a person be liked?
Celeste was surprised, “How did you manage to get so many votes?”
Mrs. Kelley looked smug. “You think I built my social network for nothing all these years?”
She wasn’t naturally good with words, but for her husband and family, she started mingling with all sorts of people, pulled strings for her husband, endured all sorts of humiliations, and became more and more articulate.
