Janis walked up to him, draped the jacket over his shoulders, and said gently, “How could I sleep when you’re not home yet? How did the chat with them go?”
Hiram gave an ambiguous answer, then turned to Steven and said, “Don’t drive too fast, be careful on the road.”
Before Steven could respond, Janis said, “Why leave so late? I’ll have someone prepare a guest room right now Just stay here for the night.”
Steven smiled and said, “It’s okay, Ms. Janis. I have some work to finish at the office. You guys should get some rest”
“You’re working this late?” Janis sighed, “Then be careful on the road, take care of yourself. If it’s inconvenient for you to eat, just come here.”
Steven laughed and agreed. As he wound up the car window and said his goodbyes, his smile faded

Hiram was taken aback, “Why are you still awake? It’s so late.”
Clair smiled. “Mom’s been waiting for you and didn’t want to sleep, so I stayed up with her. I took a nap, but Mom didn’t sleep at all.”
Hiram felt a pang of heartache on hearing this, “I told you I’d be home late. You should’ve gone to bed earlier. Why don’t you ever listen?”
Janis lowered her head, smiling. “Don’t listen to this child’s nonsense. I was just too engrossed in watching TV and couldn’t sleep
Clair said, “How am I making things up? A few years ago, you had a car accident one night when you came home. Since then, Mom has to wait for you to come home before she can sleep. Many times I’ve seen that only when your car arrives, does she turn off the light in her room.”
Janis was a bit annoyed, “Clair, stop talking nonsense.”
Clair shrugged, “What can I do? You make me stay up late with you.”
Her phone vibrated a couple of times. Clair glanced at it, picked it up, and said, “I’m going to bed now.”
She went upstairs after saying that
Hiram was filled with mixed feelings. After a while, he said, “Next time when I’m on the road, I’ll call or text you. You should rest early and not always wait for me.”
Janis smiled, “I’m used to it. I’m always afraid of being compared, so I don’t want to lose to her in your heart.”
Hiram paused for a sec, then said, “You guys are different, shouldn’t be comparing apples to oranges, you got your own strengths.”
Janis hung her head down and said, “I never wanted to replace her, nor did I ask you to forget her. If it weren’t for her, I would have never had the chance to meet you. I’m grateful for her, and I really appreciate everything I have now.”
She took a little pause, then said, “I know Old Mr. Hann might have a bone to pick with me, but I still hope to meet them, show some respect.”
Hiram sighed, “They don’t have any beef with you, it’s me who let them down. But things are looking up now, once we find the kid, she can be the buffer, and our relationship will gradually get better. Then I’ll take you to meet them.”
“Kid?” Janis was a bit puzzled, “what kid?”
