Seeing that Marina seemed unwilling to answer, Drake didn’t waste any more time and directly held Jane’s hand, intending to leave. However, Marina quickly blocked their way again, saying, “You can’t leave just yet. I still have questions!”
“I’m here to find my son,” Marina said.
Upon hearing her words, both Drake and Jane were taken aback, especially Jane, who became more convinced that the woman’s purpose in coming to the mountain was the same as theirs.
Seeing that Drake and Jane didn’t respond, Marina continued to inquire, “What about you? Why did you come to the mountain in the middle of the night?”
“We are also here to find someone,” Drake answered after a moment of contemplation.
Marina’s eyes lit up when she heard Drake’s response. “You are also here to find someone? Your child, right?”
After Marina asked her question, Jane became indifferent again. Marina touched her nose and continued, “I’m from Lanford, 26 years old, and my child’s name is Oliver James. He is six years old this year.”
Marína introduced herself, and Drake’s eyes darkened slightly. After hesitating for a moment, he said calmly. “If you want to follow, then follow.”
With that, Drake held Jane’s hand and continued forward. Marina was overjoyed and immediately followed them.
Throughout the journey, the three remained silent, keeping their eyes vigilant in case they spotted
the child.
As they walked, it was already 2 AM, and the temperature in the mountains dropped significantly. Drake found a sheltered spot and whispered to Jane, “Rest for a while. It’s difficult to search in the dark. Let’s continue our search when it’s daylight.”
Jane nodded. At this moment, she could only rely on Drake to find their son.
Seeing them resting, Marina also sat down close to them. Due to Drake and Jane’s aloofness, she instinctively refrained from talking with them and silently rested alongside.
The next morning, as dawn approached, Jane woke up to find Drake already awake. As her eyes roamed around, they locked onto a pair of eyes.
It was Marina, the woman they encountered last night, who was now gazing intently at Drake.
Feeling uncomfortable with the attention she was receiving, Jane noticed Marina’s complex gaze. Sensing the woman’s mixed emotions, Jane felt puzzled, unsure why she was being looked at with envy and jealousy. It seemed as if there were hidden feelings behind Marina’s eyes.
Meanwhile, Drake didn’t spare a glance at Marina the entire time. He walked over to Jane, opened the backpack, and took out some food and water, handing them to her with a gentle tone. “Eat something first, and then we’ll set off.”
Marina watched Drake’s caring gestures toward Jane, and her envy deepened.
Immediately after, she tried to strike up a conversation. “I also brought some food. Do you want to
try mine?”
“No need,” Drake coldly rejected without even looking at her.
“Are you worried that there might be something wrong with my food? I can eat some first to show you it’s safe,” Marina quickly explained, taking large bites of her own food.
“We have enough food,” Drake said indifferently.
After that, he continued, “Once we finish eating, we’ll go our separate ways.”
Upon hearing Drake’s words, Marina was taken aback. Without a second thought, she immediately spoke up, “No, you can’t just leave me behind.”
“We had no prior relationship. Last night, if it wasn’t for the darkness and feeling sorry for you being alone, we wouldn’t have brought you along.” Drake said coldly, showing his usual indifferent attitude towards anyone. He had only taken Marina along last night because she was also looking for her child. But now that it was daytime, he didn’t want the trouble of having her with them.
Upon hearing Drake’s words, Marina lowered her gaze, looking visibly upset. Soon, a tear rolled down
her cheek.
Seeing this, Jane couldn’t help but feel surprised. Marina seemed quite adept at turning on the waterworks, crying so convincingly that one would think she had been greatly wronged.
“Please, don’t just leave me behind. I’ll be scared alone in the mountains. Since we’re both here looking for our children, it means we share a similar experience. Our children might be going through hardships together,” Marina pleaded desperately.
“Besides, bringing me along can be beneficial for you too. I have some knowledge about this place.”
Seeing her pitiful appearance, Jane couldn’t help but think of her own child. Marina had also taken the risk of coming up the mountain for the sake of her child, showing that she cared deeply for him. After hesitating for a moment, Jane tugged at Drake’s shirt and whispered, “Why don’t we let her stay? She seems quite pitiful. We can let her leave after we find our child.”
With Jane’s suggestion, Drake hesitated for a moment before nodding in agreement. Seeing that Drake didn’t force her to leave, Marina was overjoyed, but she felt no gratitude towards Jane. Instead, her jealousy towards her deepened.
She envied the woman before her, who was being protected by such a handsome man. On the other hand, Marina had to accept the fate of being a hidden mistress. Her child had to replace the legitimate child of the wealthy man and was sent to this dangerous place.
Marina was a beautiful woman and had been involved with wealthy men since college. She had lived a prosperous life and even had a child with one of them. She had hoped that having a child would lead to marriage, but that was just a wishful thinking. The man was in a business alliance, and divorce was out of the question. Marina had to live as a hidden figure with her child.
When her child was taken away and she investigated, she found out that the man had sent her child to a special place. Marina couldn’t accept this and rushed here as soon as she found out.
After eating, the group continued to venture deeper into the mountains. Drake had some experience with selection processes like this, so they managed to travel safely.
During their journey, they encountered two children traveling together. Jane wanted to approach. them, but Drake stopped her.
