The money that Jane handed over was sna che d by the old lady from the Baker family. She counted it right in front of Jane, then put it directly into her pocket while complaining, “Just a thousand dollars as a gift? It seems that even rich people like you are quite stingy.”
Jane had already witnessed the fierceness of this old lady, so she didn’t find this behavior surprising. On the other hand, Jack’s wife didn’t even lift her gaze at this matter, as if she was already
accustomed to it.
After complaining about the small amount of money Jane gave, the old lady turned her gaze towards her daughter-in-law and scolded, “Hurry back home and help out.”
The woman didn’t utter a word and directly turned to go back inside. The old lady then looked at Jane and snorted coldly, “You said you’ll give us the money in three days. Don’t you dare come up with excuses and not be able to produce that much money. I won’t accept it.”
After saying that, the old lady turned around and left, leaving Jane with a cold and piercing gaze as she assessed the situation in the house.
Coincidentally, a few women came out of the house, whispering to each other, “Jack’s wife is quite pitiful. She didn’t even have a single good day after marrying into this family, and now her husband is gone. How will she manage with the child?”
“Yeah, the whole Baker family is like a group of vampires. They exploited Jack when he was alive, and now that he’s gone, let’s see how they’ll survive.”
“What can they do? Haven’t you heard? The old lady went to the construction site where Jack worked to demand compensation, and it seems like she’s asking for a large sum of money.”
Jane heard every word they said. Then, she heard something that shocked her, “How dare she go after compensation? Didn’t she and her son drive Jack to his death?”
“Who knows, anyway, they said there was an accident at the construction site, so the boss behind the site has to take responsibility,” the women continued to murmur.
Jane focused on the woman who seemed to be speaking the most, her eyes flashing slightly. After that, she called her driver and gave him some instructions.
An hour later, Jane met the woman at a secluded farmhouse restaurant. The driver left after bringing her there. Without wasting time, she placed some money on the table and asked the woman to tell her everything about the Baker family’s situation.
The woman’s eyes widened at the sight of so much money, and since her relationship with the old lady from the Baker family was not good, she immediately revealed everything she knew about them. After listening to her, Jane quickly asked, “You mentioned they had a big argument four days ago. Do you know what it was about?”
“Yeah, they had a huge fight. My husband went to mediate, but he was scolded and driven away by that old lady. The next day, we heard that Jack had died.”
“Do you know what they were arguing about?” Jane continued to inquire.
“What else could it be? It was about the property division. That old lady is really malicious. Jack wasn’t her biological son, and she treated him horribly. Even his wife was subjected to all sorts of

“What did you say? Jack wasn’t her biological son?” Jane was shocked because such information wasn’t in the documents she had seen. She had thought the old lady demanded compensation partly because she cared about her son, and partly because she loved money. But she had no idea there was something else hidden beneath the surface.
Seeing Jane’s astonishment, the woman smiled and said, “Yes, not many people know about it. When the old lady gave birth to her second child, there was an accident, and the baby died shortly after being born. Coincidentally, on her way back to the village, she found an abandoned baby, and she decided to keep him as her own. That baby was Jack.”
“Who would have thought that after he drank her milk, he had to support the entire family with his life? Her elder son, on the other hand, is just a lazy loafer.”
The woman was quite the gossipmonger in the village, delighting in sharing all the family affairs
Jane listened attentively and learned about Jack Baker’s family situation, as well as the extent of the old lady’s malicious behavior.
After obtaining the information she wanted, Jane handed over a substantial sum of money to the woman. Counting it, she found it was five thousand dollars, and a smile couldn’t help but appear on her face. It was a lot of money just for some casual chatting with Jane.
“I want to ask you for a favor, and if it succeeds, I’ll give you even more money,” Jane said to the woman, observing her keen interest in money.
Although she didn’t find this woman likable, dealing with someone who could be easily persuaded with money was quite convenient.
Hearing that she could get more money, the woman immediately smiled and asked, “I wonder how ! can help you, Miss?”
“I want you to keep an eye on the Baker family for me. If you discover anything, I hope you can notify me immediately. And if you can gather useful information, I can offer you even more,” Jane said to
the woman.
“Okay.” Without hesitation, the woman immediately agreed to Jane’s request.
Afterward, Jane left her contact information with the woman and departed. The woman happily went back home after receiving the money. With the new task at hand, she returned to the Baker’s house and became more attentive in her actions.
Unexpectedly, this seemingly casual request from Jane led the woman to uncover a shocking secret. In the evening, with fewer people in the Baker family, the woman lingered around as per Jane’s instructions. As the night grew late, she thought of heading back home.
