Chapter 4 Marrying Someone
Meanwhile, at Jadeborough Hospital, Ruthanne emerged from the doctor’s office with heavy news. She learned that her grandmother’s health had deteriorated, but the financial burden of the treatment was beyond her means. She had prematurely concluded her studies at the university, specializing in perfumery studies. Despite consistently ranking at the top of her class, she was unable to obtain her graduation certificate because she did not have records of her household registry. As a result, she could not even secure an opportunity for job interviews. With no other choice, she could only anonymously send the perfumes she designed to various renowned perfume design companies, hoping to seize a chance to prove herself. That included the world-famous fragrance company, Romanesque, under Lasker Group. Nevertheless, Ruthanne knew a prestigious company like Romanesque would never hire someone like her. Even the recent perfume design competition was likely to end with the fate of her sent perfume samples being discarded into the trash bin. After releasing a sigh, she instinctively reached for her phone and anxiously checked for any interview notifications she might have received. To her disappointment, she found no interview notifications waiting for her. She helplessly slumped in the chair at the hospital, feeling utterly hopeless. She had no money, no job, and her world seemed to be engulfed in darkness. She couldn’t comprehend why her parents treated her that way. Is it merely because of some astrological incompatibility? Even so, they shouldn’t have neglected Grandma like this! In order to save her grandmother, she had no choice but to sleep with a stranger. To make matters worse, she ended up with the wrong person! Ruthanne recalled the events of last night, finding them both crazy and absurd. In the darkness, that man, seemingly under the influence of drugs, shamelessly exploited her repeatedly. Ruthanne shook her head vigorously, attempting to rid herself of the humiliating memory. I don’t want to be reminded of that ever again! Right now, I should focus on gathering enough money for Grandma’s medical treatment as soon as possible. All of a sudden, she received a text message from an unknown number: I can save your grandma. Ruthanne froze for a moment. Perhaps driven by her desperate desire to save her grandmother, she had not even considered the possibility of this being a scam. Without hesitation, she subconsciously dialed the phone number. “Who are you?” The voice on the other end had a metallic, processed quality, making it difficult to discern the gender. “Who I am is not important. What’s important is that I can save your grandmother.” “There’s no such thing as a free lunch. You wouldn’t help me without a reason,” she retorted. The person chuckled. “What a smart girl you are. I do require a favor from you.” “What is it?” she asked. “I want you to marry someone,” the person answered. Ruthanne paused for a moment before asking, “Who?” “Theodoric Lasker,” the person replied. To Ruthanne, who had already sacrificed her body to save her grandmother, getting married was a trivial matter. However, this marriage was not something she could just decide on. She hesitated before adding, “But I don’t have a household registration record.” “I’ve already sorted that out for you,” the person said, “I’m at the hospital entrance now, and my car plate is JIN 5125. Come down and meet me right now.” Ruthanne ended the call, her mind in turmoil as she struggled to make sense of the situation unfolding before her. I can’t believe I just sold myself to a stranger in just a few words. But who on earth is Theodoric Lasker? Why must the person insist on me marrying that man? Ruthanne felt utterly bewildered. Nevertheless, she could not afford to dwell on those thoughts. Her priority was to rescue her grandmother, and everything else had to take a backseat. With a determined look, she cast a glance at her unconscious grandmother in the hospital room. Making up her mind, she turned around and headed downstairs. However, before she could even step out the door, Janice and Anson appeared in front of her, blocking her way. Ruthanne was elated to see them. “Dad! Mom! Did you return because you’re willing to save Grandma?” If Anson and Janice were willing to rescue her grandmother, she would not have to marry that stranger named Theodoric anymore!
