Chapter 37: Briggs
Mina and I returned to the packhouse late Thursday evening. There were still plenty of pack members milling about the common areas, and we were greeted warmly and enthusiastically. Most people asked how the trip was and how happy we were, but a few comments were asking if we had heard about Alpha and Luna. So, when we finally escaped the crowd, I was contacting Jimmy.
Theo and Ayla were blocking all mind–links, and I had no idea what was happening. Although our pack mates seemed more excited than worried, so I wasn’t too concerned. When the elevator doors opened, Jimmy was inside waiting!
“Bro, thank the goddess, you’re back,” he said.
“What the hell is going on?” I asked, guiding Mina into the lift.
“Luna is in heat,” he said with a cheeky grin.
“What?” Mina exclaimed happily. “Since when?”
“Yesterday afternoon,” Jimmy replied. “They’re holed up in a house down the street. But shit has gotten a bit crazy. Apparently, Beta Pierce has been trying to get in touch with you. I’ve got Will coming in the morning to help with the whole rogues in the cellar situation. Alpha Torin has been addressing some of the more routine problems. But I don’t know how to address the Sablemane thing. So, I’m leaving that to you now.”
”
We stepped off the elevator, and I looked at Mina.
“I guess the honeymoon really is over,” I sighed.

She chuckled. “You wouldn’t want our return any other way,” she replied, nudging me with her elbow
“I’ll handle it, Jimmy,” I told him as we made our way to our apartment.
Mina was right. Our trip was spectacular. But by the last day, we both missed the day–to–day hustle of pack life. However, having to tell Pierce and Kingston to push back their visit without telling them Ayla was in heat wasn’t exactly what I hoped to return to.
Setting our bags down, I turned my phone back on and shot Theo a message to reach out when he could, I also saw the list of missed calls and text messages from Beta Pierce, I debated putting off calling him until I heard back from Theo, but I knew what he was going to say So I sucked it up and clicked Pierce’s contact.
“It’s about damn time, Briggs,” he answered.
“Hey, I was on my honeymoon, man,” I replied. “I just stepped inside my door, so be glad you’re getting a call now.”
“Right,” Pierce said. “Congratulations. Did you two get the gift I sent?”
My lips twitched at the corners. “Yeah, we did. Mina loves it. Thanks.”
“Glad to hear it,” he stated genuinely. “But we’ve got a circus act to address. Theo told you Kingston is coming to you, right? But Theo isn‘ t responding to him. Neither is Ayla.
“Yeah, about that,” I rushed. “He needs to hold off. And he definitely needs to stop contacting Ayla right now.‘
”
“If Theo would pick up, he would be less likely to,” Pierce interjected with a huff. “I know he’s not happy about Kin showing up, but I agree that this information needs to be discussed in person if we’re dealing

with rogues.”
“Honestly, I’m not arguing with you on that,” I told him. “I don’t think Theo is either at this point.”
“Then why the hell is he dodging us? It’s not going to stop Kingston from showing up.”
“Please, by the goddess and all things holy, don’t let Kingston come here right now,” I urged. “I can’t see any good outcome if he does. Something has come up and he doesn’t need to be here.”
Pierce paused. “What’s going on, Briggs?”
I ran a hand over my face. “Just tell him to hold off a few more days. I‘ Hlet you know when it’s clear.”
“I’m not sure I can, man,” Pierce said stiffly. “He’s worried because Ayla isn’t answering. He… he wants to see her.”
“Believe me, I know,” I insisted. “That’s the problem. He’s not getting anywhere near Ayla right now, Pierce. For everybody’s sake.”
“What am I supposed to tell him? He’s just going to think Theo is being a twat and come anyway.”
“Ayla’s in heat,” I blurted out. There was silence on the other line. “I swear to the goddess, Pierce, you better not tell Kingston. But if you can’t reign him in, I’ll block our borders.”
“Shit,” Pierce whispered.
With Ayla being so different from other she–wolves, Theo and I had discussed the possibility of otherwise normal situations becoming issues. Ayla’s heat was one of them. He worried that whatever effect she had on unmated Alphas would intensify their reaction if they were

close by. Since there was some kind of connection between Kingston and Ayla at some point. I wasn’t going to disregard the concern
Packhouse living quarters weren’t just soundproof but also designed to contain our scents, primarily for a she–wolf’s heat. The ranking member’s suites were especially reinforced. While they should still be safe in the house, I couldn’t say for sure if it would stand up agamst an Alpha wolf’s senses.
And that meant for both Kingston and Theo. If Kieran sensed Kingston was close to Ayla in heat, he’d take over the shift and tear Kingston to shreds without a second thought. If any other male happened to be close by, well… It would be a bloodbath.
“Just tell Kingston they had an urgent family matter to attend to.” I said. It’s not actually a lie. “I swear, I will let you know when it is safe for him to come. And don’t fucking tell him.”
‘Are you kidding?” Pierce replied. “This would break his heart. Again. He’s been getting back to his old self little by little. But this… I’m not outting that knowledge on him. I’ll figure something out.”
Good,” I replied. “Let me know if there’s anything I can do to help.”
Are you actually going to answer?” Pierce chided, his tone friendly.
Yeah, yeah,” I replied. “My phone will be on at all times.”
