The following day, at Truson Mansion, Mary prepared a lavish breakfast for Theodoric and Ruthanne.
Ruthanne felt a surge of awkwardness as she took in the sight o delectable dishes.

Part of her wanted to escape the situation, but her hunger prevailed, leaving her with no choice but to reluctantly take a seat at the table and feel perplexed by the proper use of the fork and knife.
Theodoric noticed Ruthanne’s confusion and playfully teased, “Don’t you know how to handle a fork and knife?”
Ruthanne bit her lip in frustration, her self–esteem as a woman of modest means undermined by the stark contrast of wealth and privilege before her.
Determined to lose face, Ruthanne mustered her courage and replied, “I know. I’m just not
accustomed to it.”
Theodoric continued to slice his steak casually, his gaze fixed on her. “Stubborn
as ever.”
Ruthanne couldn’t help but feel like an outsider, a peculiar figure who struggled to fit into Theodoric’s sophisticated world.
Sitting across from him, she found herself studying the array of delicacies on the table, desperately searching for a dish that wouldn’t necessitate the use of a fork and knife.
Her attention was drawn to a small piece of bread on the table, but she knew it wouldn’t satisfy her hunger.
Just as she was fretting over her limited options, a beautifully arranged plate with several slices of steak was presented before her.
The juicy meat glistened enticingly, making her mouth water.
Ruthanne turned to Theodoric, her face a mix of shock and confusion.
She couldn’t help but wonder why he was being so kind to her.
“Um… thank you,” she said awkwardly.
Theodoric continued to cut another plate of steak without looking up. He replied in a nonchalant tone, “Don’t I have a name?”
Uh… Is he expecting me to address him by name?
Ruthanne had initially intended to address Theodoric as Mr. Lasker, but the task assigned to her by the mysterious man came rushing back to her mind.
She had been instructed to shower Theodoric with affectionate gestures to make him fall for her within three months.
The realization sent a chill down her spine, and she couldn’t help but feel uneasy about the situation. However, she knew she had no choice but to comply with the plan.
In her mind, she reasoned that now might be an opportune moment to begin displaying affection toward

Theodoric.
She cleared her throat, mustering her courage, and asked softly, “Can I call you Theo?”
Theodoric paused, his gaze fixated on her, a mix of confusion, suspicion, and surprise in his eyes.
Ruthanne found her choice of calling him Theo a bit cheesy, but Theodoric thought otherwise.
It seemed to trigger a memory deep within him. He harked back to a time fifteen years ago when a naïve little girl had addressed him in the same manner.
The innocence in Ruthanne’s eyes reminded him of that little girl who had asked him, “Theo, will you marry me when you grow up?”
The similarity in the way Ruthanne addressed him now and how the little girl had addressed him all those years ago struck a chord within Theodoric.
D*mn it! What is going on? Why do I keep getting reminded of the little girl from fifteen years ago when I’m with Ruthanne? But I’ve never felt this way when I’m with Marianne.
Frustrated and filled with doubt, Theodoric couldn’t help but question whether he had gotten the wrong
person.
However, he quickly composed himself, recalling the ongoing investigation being conducted by Ballard.
He understood the importance of not acting impulsively and waiting for the truth to come to light.
Taking control of his emotions, Theodoric said nonchalantly, “Don’t talk to me in that tone.”
Ruthanne was left speechless, unsure of how to respond to his stern remark.
Looks like this isn’t going to work on him.
As Ruthanne savored the delectable beef steak, she couldn’t shake the feeling that she needed to alter her strategy in capturing his heart.
After breakfast, just as she prepared to depart for work, an urgent knock echoed through the grand entrance of the mansion.

Ruthanne hastened to the door, only to be taken aback by the sight of her parents standing before her.
Beside them was her twin sister, Marianne, whose eyes were wide with astonishment and disbelief.
