Chapter 14 I Call The Shots Here
Theodoric didn’t fly into a rage as expected. Instead, a flicker of admiration crossed his eyes as he listened to the woman’s logical and composed response. Reaching out to grab the bottle of perfume, he asked coldly, “Did you create this perfume?” Ruthanne nodded boldly. “Of course.” Theodoric’s gaze turned sharp. “You’re lying!” The investigation report from last night revealed that she lacked a university degree, thus making her illiterate. Theodoric found it hard to accept that a woman without formal education could create such a remarkable perfume, leading him to believe she was deceitful. Ruthanne grew increasingly frustrated with the situation. What was meant to be a straightforward interview turned into a confrontation with someone harboring a personal vendetta. Instead of focusing on her qualifications and skills for the job, he persisted in probing into her personal life, which was totally irrelevant. “I challenge you to present any evidence that supports your claim of me being a liar,” Ruthanne retorted firmly. “I personally undertook every step of the perfume-making process, from grinding the petals to distilling the floral oil and determining the precise blending ratio. I have no motive or reason to deceive anyone.” A flicker of irritation flashed across Theodoric’s face as he realized the unwavering persistence of Ruthanne. How dare she disrespect me? I must find a way to undermine her confidence! “You lack the proper education to create perfumes. Even if you have some capability, your motive is merely to garner attention with the use of green sparkles. Merely innovating for the sake of innovation is not true creativity, and you will soon be eliminated from the market. I’m sorry, but you have not passed our company’s evaluation.” What is he talking about? He didn’t even smell my perfume! “Mr. Lasker, I cannot accept these one-sided results. Firstly, you did not even ask me any profession-related questions, so how could you determine whether or not I have the ability to create perfumes? Secondly, I was not trying to be innovative with this perfume. The color was a result of using a particular flower that naturally leaves a residue after distillation. It was not a deliberate attempt at innovation. Thirdly, I would like to know how much more professional you are compared to me. Can you detect the top notes, middle notes, and base notes? Do you possess a deep understanding of perfumes?” Ruthanne replied defiantly. The tension spiked, and the other employees broke into a cold sweat. D*mn, she’s savage! Silvius and Theodoric stood together in a corner, their expressions filled with silent concern. They shared worried glances, fully aware of the potential repercussions for Theodoric. As the founder of a perfume company, any news of him losing his sense of smell would undoubtedly create chaos within the organization. Moreover, if this information were to reach the customers, it could severely impact their trust in the company. Therefore, the weighty secret remained confined to Silvius and Ballard’s knowledge alone. However, Ruthanne, unaware of this, continued to press Theodoric, challenging him to discern the notes of the perfume. Silvius and Ballard silently anticipated his response, expecting him to falter. Before the secret could be exposed, Silvius swiftly moved forward, determined to intervene and salvage the situation. However, his efforts were abruptly halted by a magnetic voice that resonated through the room. “Mint leaves and fragrant pears as the top notes, with mandala and jasmine as the middle notes. The base notes consist of white musk and raspberry, correct?” Theodoric’s voice sliced through the tension in the room as he locked his icy gaze onto Ruthanne. His words carried a touch of arrogance as he continued, “Furthermore, I would like to remind you that I am the founder of Romanesque. I get to determine whether you remain here, and you have no grounds to challenge my decision.” After uttering those words, Theodoric suddenly faltered as realization dawned upon him. The base notes of the perfume Ruthanne had created matched the scent he had encountered at the hotel that night!
