Chapter 5 Fight

Somehow, Josephine wanted to get his hair right. But Yandel was so tall that she could not reach the top of his head even though she stood on her tiptoes.

Yandel bent slightly. Then she patted his hair with a smile.

“Mr. Schroeder, you still look good with messy hair. Bye.”

Yandel’s face changed a bit. He pulled her.

“Wait. Give me your number.”

She pressed her lips and gave him her number. She returned his phone. “OK… Goodbye.”

Yandel followed with concern.

“Take care of yourself. No more heavy stuff. Call me if you need help.”

Josephine nodded at him with a smile.

“OK. I’ll protect our baby.”

Her smile was bright and warm, making Yandel no longer anxious. He felt calm and sighed in relief.

After Josephine went back, Lindsey asked her to take out the money.

“You didn’t make any mistakes, right? Don’t offend that man in charge. It was hard for your dad to persuade him.”

Josephine took out the money and put it on Lindsey’s hand. Lindsey’s eyes lit up. She took the money and counted.

Earl walked out with sweat.

He asked with concern, “Josie, it’s hot. You must be tired. Take the money and buy ice cream.”

Just as she planned to take the money, she heard Lindsey’s words.

“She is a grown-up now. Just delivering. How could it be tiring? She even failed the test. She should help us. Ice cream is too expensive for us. Harley can only have it once a day.”

Josephine looked at the money in Earl’s hand and didn’t take it in the end.

“Dad, I’m gonna wash my face.”

She went to the toilet. Standing in front of the vague mirror, she tried to hold her tears back. It was nothing new to her. Why would she feel so sad today?

She touched the misty mirror and cooled down. Her eyes were red. But there were no tears in her eyes.

After taking deep breaths, she walked out. Earl was beside Lindsey. They seemed to be satisfied with the revenue.

Josephine touched her pocket subconsciously. She did something bold. She only gave Lindsey 15 dollars for each roast chicken. Since she was pregnant, she might need money in an emergency. So she wanted to keep the money.

Seeing Josephine, Lindsey put away the money at once.

“There are some ingredients in the truck. Take them in. We got more orders today.”

Josephine paused and turned to her.

“I’m too tired to do that.”

Lindsey couldn’t believe it. She walked around the counter and glared at her.

“What? Too tired to do that? You are an adult. How hard could it be? You are just lazy! You are the worst among all the kids! And you are also the laziest! You wouldn’t even help us with such simple work! I shouldn’t have been so nice to you!”

Josephine had gotten used to it. She would listen quietly, usually. And Lindsey would stop when she felt tired.

But Josephine couldn’t stand it today. She looked at Lindsey with shaking lips.

“Lazy? Mom, tell me who did the most housework. I did more than you did! I cleaned the apartment, did laundry, cooked, and did the dishes after school. I even washed all the sheets before the college admissions test! I didn’t go to bed until 2:30 a.m. Harley peed in his bed. You knew it. But you wouldn’t get up to help him. Instead, you asked me to do it. How could you say I am lazy?”

“Shut up! Don’t mention your brother!”

Lindsey slapped her fiercely with shaking hands.

“Don’t mention that. Or I’ll slap you so hard!”

Earl pulled Lindsey.

“Enough. Why did you slap her? Luckily, we don’t have any customers now. Or people will feel bad.”

He looked at Josephine and frowned.

“Josie, Harley is still young and proud. If he hears you, he will be upset and refuse to eat anything. He is your younger brother. You should care about him.”

Josephine failed to hold her tears back. Lindsey’s scolding was nothing new to her. But her father’s words hurt her a lot.

Every time Harley refused to eat, Lindsey would try her best to cheer him up by giving him money or gifts. However, she may not have anything to eat once she went home late after school. Sometimes, Earl would ask her if she had dinner. But that was it.

“Josie, apologize to your mom now. Don’t go too far. People will laugh at us.”

Earl pulled Josephine, who shook off his hand. She looked at them, crying.

“No! I did nothing wrong! You just don’t like me because I am a girl.”

Lindsey’s face changed in anger. She raised her hand to slap Josephine, only to be stopped by Earl.

Lindsey pointed at her.

“Yes. You are a girl. Girls are useless. This is what I got after raising you up! You can’t even go to college. What will you be able to do?”

Josephine bit her lips with tears on her face.

“OK. Then go to your sons.”

She turned around and ran out.

“Josie.”

Earl cried out. But Lindsey snapped.

“Stop! Let her go. She can’t go anywhere. She is just a girl. And she will regret it once she can’t earn her bread.”

Josephine ran out and could still hear Lindsey’s scold. Covering her ears, she ran fast. The tears blurred her eyes. She couldn’t even see clearly.

The screeching of cars brought her back to her senses. Then she realized a car was driving over.

Her body was stiff. She even wondered if she should avoid it or embrace death. If she died, she wouldn’t have to endure their scolding and humiliation.

But…she was pregnant!

She reacted fast subconsciously. Covering her belly, she tried to dodge away.
