Chapter 71 The Ex–Fiancé Came to Her Door and Threw Money at Her
Julia’s sudden push caught Carter off guard, causing him to stumble and collide with a nearby flower stand. He winced and clutched his lower back, casting a disbelieving look at Julia.
Before he could utter a word, Julia’s voice rang out, brimming with anger.
“Carter! Did I wrong you in a past life? Are you determined to hound me like this? If you have something to say, say it directly to me! And now you’ve even come to find my brother! Are you attempting to use my brother to threaten me?”
Conrad was an emotional trigger for Julia, an area she couldn’t tolerate being touched. That’s why her fury was so intense.
“You’ve misunderstood. I never meant to do anything to your brother. It’s just that you’ve been avoiding me, refusing to see me, so I had no choice but to come here to find you,” Carter explained.
“Do
you think I’ll believe that? You didn’t mean to do anything to my brother? Then let me ask you, who broke his ribs? Who made him suffer in the hospital for so long?” With each sentence, Julia closed the distance between herself and Carter.
As he looked at Julia, her face ablaze with anger, Carter couldn’t help but feel a pang of guilt when he thought about what had happened to Conrad.
“I’m sorry about what happened to your brother. But I didn’t order my bodyguards to break his ribs. They did it on their own,” Carter said.
“Oh, come on, Carter. I’ve noticed you’re quite skilled at shifting blame onto others.” Julia regarded Carter with intense disdain, a hint of revulsion evident in her eyes.
“Tell me, did you not instruct the bodyguards to prevent my brother from entering? I’m his only sister, and you expected him to simply stand by while his sister suffered? Of course, he had to intervene no matter what. After all, you’re the one who pays your bodyguards, so naturally, they follow your commands.”
Carter’s face grew even gloomier, and he found Julia’s scornful stare more difficult to endure than her words. Yet Julia had more to say.
“Furthermore, in the past, it was you who cheated first, yet you kept finding excuses and blamed me for changing. You claim that I changed for the worse, which is why you couldn’t resist cheating. It’s hilarious, Carter. You’ve become quite adept at justifying your numerous instances of infidelity. Now, anyone who wants to cheat can do so with a clear conscience, just like you did. You’ve truly excelled at setting an example for the perfect cheater. Shift the blame onto the other. person, accuse them of changing, and absolve yourself of responsibility. Disgusting!”
“You…” Carter began, unable to bear her words any longer, but he quickly fell silent as he was at a loss for words.
Carter had long observed the transformation in Julia since their last encounter at the hospital. She had become sharp–tongued, assertive, and prickly. However, engaging in that discussion now seemed futile. Instead of retaliating, Carter let out a sigh and said, “I didn’t come here to argue with you.”
Since Julio had spurted out her pent–up rage, she settled on the couch, her legs crossing. She then looked at Carter with a tilted head, letting him say his intention for coming.
“Are
you here to ask me to find the Divine Doctor to cure your mother? Oh, and Vivien too?” Julia speculated, her tone laced with a hint of mockery.

Conrad, on the side, observed Julia, then shifted his gaze to Carter, whose eyes betrayed a trace of resentment. Despite seeing that, he couldn’t help but think, ‘He caused so much trouble for my sister, and yet he wants her help? Isn’t he just too selfish?’
“That’s right. That’s why I’m here,” Carter affirmed, pulling a bank card from his wallet. “Here’s two million. Once you get the Divine Doctor to treat my mother and Vivien, I’ll add another three
million.”
Five million was undoubtedly a substantial sum for Julia and Conrad, who had been cast aside. Thus, Carter assumed Julia would accept it readily, but things didn’t proceed as smoothly as he had anticipated.
“Take your money. I won’t agree,” Julia refused, her expression remaining impassive.
“Why?” Carter asked, his disbelief evident.
“Because Vivien’s illness is fake. Although the Divine Doctor is skilled, they can’t cure someone who’s deliberately pretending to be sick,” Julia explained.
A heavy silence settled in the living room as Carter and Julia locked eyes. After a pause, Carter spoke up.
“I admit that at our wedding last time, Vivien did play some tricks, but I’m sure about her frail health.”
“Is that so?” Julia arched an eyebrow, her voice as tranquil as a wisp of smoke. “Then go ahead and return to Vivien. Ask her if she’s willing to let the Divine Doctor examine her pulse if I really manage to get them here. Will she dare?”
Carter felt a pang of uncertainty at the confidence in Julia’s demeanor. It wasn’t that he lacked. trust in Vivien, but with every layer of “truth” unveiled, he had started to doubt her too. Suddenly, Lilian’s words echoed in his mind. ‘Don’t trust Julia. It’s all part of her scheme. A sinister psychological tactic!”
His reverie was then disrupted as Julia resumed speaking.
“And your mother always speaks rudely and hurtfully. Even if I save her, she won’t feel a bit grateful. I’m not some saint who helps the needy, so why should I help?” Julia felt that both Lilian and Vivien were so wicked that they would team up to fight her in the future.
“You see, I’m not asking for your help. I’m offering you money as pay. If five million isn’t enough, then I’ll make it ten!” Carter declared, gritting his teeth.
If five million was already a substantial sum for Julia and Conrad, then ten million, twice the value, would undoubtedly be even more compelling. It could serve as a stepping stone for them to establish a business. With proper direction and management, the endeavor could prove
prosperous for both parties involved.
“Furthermore, I’ll use my connections to help you start your business,” Carter added with newfound determination, his confidence radiating from his demeanor.
‘Given what I’ve offered, Julia will undoubtedly agree,‘ he thought.
As Carter’s thoughts drifted along these lines, he observed Julia’s hand reaching out to pick up the card from the table. Carter’s expression, as if foreseeing this move, remained unperturbed. Assuming he had successfully persuaded her, he began, “So, it’s a dea…”
However, his words were abruptly halted as Julia hurled the bank card at him, her voice dripping with disinterest as she declared, “Not interested!”

connections, he can’t match what I can offer,‘ Julia thought coolly.
Carter’s eyes widened as he stared at Julia, a boiling rage rising within him.
“What do you want, then?” he bellowed, his anger becoming increasingly difficult to contain.
‘Is she expecting me to break up with Vivien? Must I go to the extent of marrying her to get what I want?‘ simmered in Carter’s mind, his fury intensifying.
Carter’s chest heaved, his anger palpable and unrestrained.
“I don’t want anything. I just don’t want to get involved,” Julia responded in a dispassionate tone. That was just her personality, and it was also the personality of the Divine Doctor. For those she wanted to help, she would do so without demanding a single cent. Conversely, for those she chose not to help, even if they offered her a fortune, she would not extend a helping hand. Enveloped in a surge of anger, Carter took a decisive step forward, his resolve driving him to confront Julia head–on.
