Chapter 105: Can He Really Be So Indifferent?
Jennifer sat there, listening to Mark’s words with a certain cruelty. He seemed almost ruthless in the way he expressed himself, not minding the potential hurt he was, causing or the embarrassment it brought her.
She felt like a merciless executioner, scraping away her own facade.
“Don’t entertain thoughts that don’t belong, thoughts that shouldn’t even cross your mind,” Mark’s words were sharp and direct. He believed he was being clear enough – if Jennifer c could listen and honestly give birth to this child, he would ensure their protection. But he warned that if she continued down an insatiable path of uncertainty, he wouldn’t sugarcoat his responses.
In this moment, Mark’s irritation was palpable. His mind kept drifting towards Mae and what needed to be done. He lacked the patience to remain in the hospital room any longer. He could endure Jennifer’s words, only because of his lingering feelings for Mae.
Leaving the room after his words, Mark’s exit was interrupted by Jennifer’s plea, “Mark!” He paused, not turning back, his impatience now more evident than ever.
“I know that a status like mine doesn’t deserve you, and I’ve never had the luxury of marrying into the Smith family, but I……”
paused for a moment, looking at Mark’s slender back with moist eyes, hoping that Mark would turn around and see her pitiful and miserable expression.
Only unfortunately, Mark let her down, he didn’t even move a bit.
“I have deep feelings for you, regardless of our societal differences. I don’t need a title, I just want to be by your side. I’m willing to give up everything.”
Jennifer hoped her vulnerability might strike a chord with Mark. She had discarded her pretenses, realizing that it was now or never. She believed that her genuine affection, untainted by ambition, could move him. She was determined to outshine Mae and claim her place as the cherished wife of the Smith Corporation’s enigmatic CEO.
With a mixture of determination and uncertainty, she continued, “Forgive my audacity, but I can’t hold back –”
Her sentence remained unfinished, as Mark unexpectedly turned around. Jennifer’s heart skipped a beat. She had hoped to evoke his pity with her forlorn expression.
Mark’s face, however, remained cool and aloof, his impatience undiminished. His words cut through the air, “Must I make this more awkward?”
The icy words froze Jennifer’s hopeful expression. “If you really have this self–knowledge, you will guard your misplaced sentiments more cautiously.”
With that, Mark left without another glance, leaving Jennifer stunned. She stared at the closed door in disbelief, feeling as though her heart and dignity had been shattered.
Can he really be so indifferent?
She had bared her soul to him, set aside her pride, and he dismissed her as having ‘self–knowledge.”
Was she truly unworthy of him? Did he see her as shameless and undeserving? Jennifer felt the weight of her sacrifices to be close to Mark, even going so far as to engage in conversations she

wouldn’t normally
She glanced at her slightly bulging belly, her face devoid of the usual maternal tenderness. Instead, it was overtaken by a simmering resentment.
She refused to accept this defeat. She wouldn’t surrender after investing so much. Mae might have Mark for now, but Jennifer was not ready to relent.
As Jennifer’s determination solidified, her gaze shifted toward the door, and a touch of viciousness crept up from the bottom of her eyes.
In her mind, she declared her intention: Mark would be hers, no matter what it took.
Meanwhile, Mae left Jennifer’s hospital room, her footsteps not lingering. Their child’s situation demanded attention, and she was certain that Mark and Jennifer had a lot to discuss. Yet, an unexpected heaviness settled in her heart.
Outside, the snow had just ceased falling, creating a serene but cold environment. The sparse hospital surroundings exuded a stark stillness. An inexplicable sense of isolation gripped Mae. She tried to suppress the throbbing ache in her chest, a result of the unresolved emotions swirling within
her.
Even her mind could not help but flash back to the picture of Mark and Jennifer snuggling up to each other in the hospital room at this time.
“Mae, have you lost your mind?” Mae chastised herself in a low, resolute voice. She clenched her teeth and shook off her inner turmoil, striding purposefully towards the exit, leaving the scene
behind.
Stepping out of the building, the frigid air jolted Mae awake. The suffocating pain that had weighed on her heart seemed to lighten, even if just a little. She repeated a mantra to herself: Mark and I were divorced, and our ties are severed. The divorce papers were signed and sealed. Mark had his own life, a new family, a wife, and children. And I, Mae Lee, had no reason to concern myself with any of it.
Taking a deep breath, she trudged forward through the snow. The cold beneath her feet helped dissipate the unease within her.
Suddenly, the sound of carefree laughter reached her ears from nearby. Mae instinctively looked up just in time to see a snowball hurtling toward her face.
Her pupils contracted as she dodged the incoming snowball with swift reflexes. “Mae!” Mark’s voice rang out, a mix of annoyance and concern.
Mae stood there momentarily, her thoughts muddled. As she looked up again, Mark was already at her side. “Are you all right?” He reached out to inspect any potential harm, but Mae instinctively sidestepped, avoiding his touch.
“I’m fine,” she replied faintly, her brow furrowing to conceal the brief jolt of panic that had surged
within her.
In the blink of an eye, two young people hastened over, brimming with apologies. “We’re so sorry about that snowball. It was an accident, really.”
The two young people, who were most likely college students, carried a bag of medication, suggesting they had just left the hospital. Their snowball fight had led them outside.

Mae smiled gently, a stark contrast to her demeanor when facing Mark. Her expression was much softer as she accepted their apologies.
After the young couple offered their apologies once more and departed, the girl covertly stole a glance at Mae, whispering to her boyfriend, “I think that was Mae, just now.”
Mae paid little heed to the conversation. But Mark’s presence beside her made her slightly uneasy. The mention of her name, “Mae,” had stirred a whirlwind of emotions within her heart.
