It seemed that Molly was targeting her. If she didn’t accept the challenge, Molly would find other ways to embarrass her.
She was not afraid of trouble coming her way
So Celeste smiled and said politely. “There will be plenty of opportunities for performances in the future. Today is the Rowley family’s big day, I’m a guest, I can’t steal the spotlight from the bride and groom. But since Miss Molly has proposed it, I can’t embarrass her, so… how about I perform a little magic trick for everyone? As entertainment, and also as my wedding gift to the newlyweds.”
Nicolas immediately showed interest, “Can you pull a babe out of a hat?”
Celeste raised an eyebrow, “I can make living things appear
Everyone was immediately filled with anticipation, only Liam frowned when he heard ‘make living things appear”
Soon, the waiter brought the props, a few soft balls and two small bowls.
She first performed a simple magic trick
This trick was very simple, Celeste had learned it in high school and had even shown it off at the school talent show before.
She played with the balls and the bowls, making the performance very exciting.
Molly scoffed, “You call that magic? That’s just child’s play.”
Trisha taunted, “Why don’t you perform a magic trick for us, show us what real magic looks like.”
Molly glared at her
The bride, however, was very curious, “Do you know any other tricks?”
Celeste smiled slightly and said gently, “May I borrow your hand?”
The bride generously extended her hand. Celeste tucked two balls into her palm and told her to squeeze them. Then she covered her hand with a handkerchief As she chanted, the handkerchief began to bulge
When she lifted the handkerchief, a beautiful parrot appeared in the bride’s palm. Its little head was moving around, looking very lively
“Oh my god,” the bride was thrilled, “that’s so amazing.”
Molly sneered at the trick, “You just put a parrot in her hand, right? The color is the same.”
Celeste looked at her and said, “If Miss Molly thinks Mrs. Rowley is my confederate, why don’t you try it yourself?”
Molly stood up and said, “Sure, I’d love to see how you can create a living thing in my hand”
She extended her hand to Celeste.
Just like before, Celeste gave her two balls and told her to hold them.
Molly arrogantly said. Tll just keep my hand like this, you can just do the trick. You can’t be picky about the pose for a magic trick, can you?”
Celeste said gently. “It’s a living thing after all, I’m afraid you won’t be able to hold it
Molly laughed lightly. “You’re afraid of exposing yourself, aren’t you?”
Celeste smiled and said, “As you wish.”
With that, she covered it up with a handkerchief.
Molly’s face was etched with pure disdain. She didn’t believe for a second that Celeste could pull anything off in front of her. She was simply waiting for her to mess up so she could laugh at her expense.
Celeste looked up and asked, “Miss Molly, do you like animals?”
“They’re ainght”
“Do you have any pets?”
Molly shot her a glance, “Trying to distract me so you can switch out what’s in my hand, are you?”
Celeste chuckled. “Just making conversation. You don’t have to answer if you don’t want to. Spatial displacement does take some time, after all. I wouldn’t want the atmosphere to get awkward while we wait.”
“Well, I have a question for you,” Molly shot her another glance, “What do your parents do for a living? Why do you know so many cheap tricks?”
The question was too direct, too demeaning. It was practically the same as saying “I look down on you”
