Zach didn’t shake her hand, only nodding his head indifferently.
Celeste was taken aback, and awkwardly retracted her hanging hand.
Mrs. Kidd sensed something was off, but didn’t dwell on it, taking the initiative to say. “Let’s start the meal, it’s about time and everyone is hungry, let’s
chat while we eat.”
“Yes, yes, let’s get the food started. Kendrick said.
Compared to the Kendricks enthusiasm, Director Zach was much more reserved. It might be due to his profession that he wasn’t a very warm person, or it might be because of the presence of Celeste, a stranger, that he didn’t want to say too much.
Moreover, Celeste noticed that whenever Kendrick brought her up in conversation, Zach hardly spoke.
Celeste felt embarrassed, thinking Zach might be bothered by her intrusion that day during the audition.
Kendrick was a talkative person, so with him at the dinner it didn’t seem too cold.
After having a few drinks, Kendrick finally got down to business.
“Zach, you know I usually don’t ask for favors, but I really need your help with something today” Kendrick said.
Zach laughed. “Had some drinks, and now you want to say some true words?”
Kendrick scoffed, “How strong is beer? My mind is clear.”
He pointed at Celeste, “Celeste graduated from the University of T’s performing arts program, a prestigious school with outstanding skills. If you have a suitable role for her in your film, consider her. I guarantee she won’t disappoint you!”
Zach sipped his coffee silently, paused for a moment, and said softly. “You know my temper, I don’t discuss work during meal”
Kendrick frowned, “We are friends, why are you so stubborn? I’m not asking you to do anything shady, just let her try out for a role. I’m sure she can do better than the actors you’ve found!”
“I do open auditions for many of my actors. If the conditions are right, everyone can come give it a try. But if the audition is just toying with others, there’s no need to waste everyone’s time.” Zach said.
Celeste furrowed her brows
She sensed a hidden meaning in Zach’s words.
Zach didn’t say anything further. “Let’s eat, It’s rare for us to get together, let’s talk about something unrelated to work.”
Kendrick wanted to say more but was gently pulled by Mrs. Kidd under the table, so he closed his mouth.
The lunch left Celeste feeling uncomfortable.
Once the meal was over, Kendrick went to pay the bill and Zach went to the restroom.
As he came out, Celeste waited for him at the door.
Zach paused and whispered, ‘Excuse me.
Without beating around the bush, Celeste confronted him head-on, “Mr. Miller, what did you mean by what you said at the table?”
Zach glanced at her, “Ms. Campbell knows what’s going on, so why ask me?”
“What do I know?” Celeste felt increasingly confused. “You said earlier that I was toying with others at my auditions? I don’t understand why you would say that Do you think I’m using shady methods by asking others for opportunities to have lunch with you? Or are you still unhappy about my intruding into your room on the day of the audition? I can apologize for that; it was impulsive of me. But as for today’s gathering. I only found out Kendrick had invited others after you arrived”
