Chapter 271
Before April could finish speaking, the phone call was hung up. Jane stared at the ended call with a heavy heart.
No, she had to look for an answer.
Jane immediately tried calling April again, but this time her number cannot be reached and it was only worsening her mood.
She still could not get to her despite calling several more times. Thinking about how hesitant April sounded on the phone was making her more worried.
April would not be in trouble, would she?
Just thinking about it stressed her out.
While in the middle of a thought, her phone vibrated. She was expecting the caller to be April; however, when she picked it up, it turned out to be Andrew.
Jane did not think twice before hanging up, although the man on the other end kept calling her over and over again.
Jane got frustrated and rejected the call once more before turning her phone off.
Once she calmed down, Jane then headed towards Warner Corporation.
After dealing with the recent backlogs, she glanced at the time it was already have past one in the afternoon. She had not eaten for the entire morning, and as she was starving, she decided to go out and grab something to eat.
Stepping out of the elevator, Jane looked up and saw a man dressed in a suit.
She stared at him, feeling a sense of familiarity. She did nor recognize him at the time.
Just as she was about to walk away from the elevator, the man opened his mouth and called out to her.
“Miss Bentley!”
Jane turned back, her looking at the man cautiously.
“You called me?”
Charles stared back at her, conflicting emotions on his face along with a trace of nostalgia.
Jane did not understand why the man was staring at her, but after a few moments she soon recognized who the man was.
In front of her was none other than Annie’s father, Charles Carlton.
They both met once at the hospital. Jane did not pay much attention to him – Annie’s mother, however, kept quite an impression.
“Yes, it’s such a rare opportunity to meet you. I was wondering if I could treat you to a meal,” Charles Carlton spoke humbly, without a trace of hypocrisy or insincerity that Annie carried.
Jane was nonetheless surprised. The two of them do not know each other that well, they could even be called strangers. Why would he invite her to go outside?

know this might be all of a sudden for me to ask, but I want to talk to you about something and I’d appreciate it if you could indulge me.”
As Jane did not yet reply and instead was in deep thought, Charles Carlton repeated it slowly.
Looking at those eyes Annie Carlton shares with, Jane saw that he did not have any ill intentions. She thought about it before nodding.
Afterwards, the two sat down at a restaurant not far away from Warner Corporations.
Since she was already hungry, she instantly picked up her fork after the food was served, not bothering to wait for the man sitting opposite her.
When she was almost full, she dropped the utensils and faced Charles who had only been watching
her.
He barely moved his fork as his eyes kept following Jane. Seeing her calm and composed appearance, the nostalgia in him grew stronger.
“Mr. Carlton, what do wish to talk about?”
Jane spoke, which brought Charles back to the present.
Looking at the somewhat familiar face in front of him, a gentle smile appeared on his face.
“I don’t know why, but seeing you always gives me a sense of deja vu. That is why I wanted to invite you to a meal.”
Hearing this stunned Jane. She was not at all expecting that from him.
“Yes, but I still have a lot of things I need to attend to. I’m afraid I cannot stay with you for much longer,” she said politely, subtly meaning to bid goodbye to Charles.
Catching on to Jane’s words, his face was full of mixed emotions.
“There is one more thing; it’s about Mr. Warner. Regarding the situation between Mr. Warner and my daughter, I am deeply sorry. I’m here to express my sincere apologies to you.”
Jane was once again stunned, not expecting Charles to apologize on behalf of Annie.
“My daughter doesn’t know any better. I will make sure to give her strict discipline in the future. I will not let her interfere with your and Mr. Warner’s relationship. For her sake, I ask you to not take it personally with her.”
Listening to Charles Carlton apologizing for Annie, Jane could not help but think of her own father who would only threaten and oppress her. Comparing the two leaves a huge gap between them.
At the very least, Annie Carlton had a sensible father. Unlike her situation, Andrew Bentley would only think of her when something came up, never caring about her as a daughter.
“As long as she behave well and does not provoke me, I won’t hold anything against her,” Jane replied.
As for Annie, it would be a lie to say that Jane did not loathe her, not to mention the things she has done in the past, but now her demonic acts would be enough for Jane to deal with her unapologetically.
In front of her father, Jane could not promise to let Annie get away with her actions.
However if Annie dares to provoke her again, she definitely won’t just forgive and forget her for it.

Charles Carlton is a smart person. He would naturally understand what Jane meant.
The two of them peacefully finished their meal. Leaving the restaurant, Jane politely parted ways with the man and was about to return to the building when he called out again.
*Miss Bentley!”
Jane turned around and looked at him, confused. Charles took a few steps forward and spoke to her with a smile.
“Can you give me your phone?”
Jane had no idea why but still handed it over. She then saw Charles enter a string of numbers in her phone and dialed it before his own phone rang.
Taking it out, he glanced at the number on the screen. He grinned and returned Jane’s phone.
“This is my number. If you need my help with anything, you can call me anytime.”
Jane froze, but still took her phone and hummed faintly.
After he left, only then did she return towards Warner Corporations. Just as she reached the curb, a black car approached her.
Two big men dressed in black quickly got out of the car and spoke to Jane stiffly.
“Miss Bentley, our boss gives you an invitation.”
Jane’s eyes narrowed upon hearing this. When the two men tried to take her by force, she immediately made a move to resist.
However, to her surprise, the men were both competent and she was no match for them.
After being pulled into the car, Jane face paled.
She more or less guessed who sent the two men.
