Thirty–Eight
Isabella’s POV
It was the morning of the ball and from the day I went to work and heard people whispering all about it till today, I had not heard a single word from Alexander and neither have I been able to secure an audience with him. I guess it was to be expected that he’d be so busy in preparations for today, right?
I shrugged as I pulled myself out of bed and went to prepare something to eat. I was actually in such a good mood today and I had even let my mom employ all the stylists and makeup artists that she wanted to today.
If the Alpha was to announce his mate. I had to look the part after all. My mom and Chloe were coming over later on for the three of us to go on a spa date and I was actually looking forward to relaxing.
I had my light breakfast before grabbing my phone and shaking my head. when I saw that my mom had created a group chat for her, Chloe, and I just because of today. She was always excited to do things that made her feel half her age.
When my mom texted me that she was on her way to my place, I began to pack a bag of everything I’ll need, knowing that immediately after the spa. we’ll be heading to my parents‘ house to dress up. Well technically, only me would be dressing up since my mom and Chloe were not in need of another mate and the planning committee had decided to keep the guest list as limited as possible since a lot of unmated young women and men were to be expected.

The next step was the dressing up and my mom and Chloe seemed too excited to just fuss all over me. It was an argument of ‘Red is her color.‘ and ‘No, white is her color. She’d look like such an angel.‘
The stylist had to snap at them to sit down at some point while my mother just tsked. In the end, we settled for a pale cyan flowing dress that everyone agreed on. My mother said it screamed Luna and after checking the price tag, she told me that I had better come back mated to the Alpha or else she would have my head and my cheeks betrayed me by turning bright red which confused the makeup artist who was just about to powder on some rouge.
My dad had walked in at that moment and told me not to mind my mother at all, “Your mate doesn’t have to be the Alpha sweetheart. He just has to be your mate.” He said, going for an air kiss. “Forget about the price of the dress and just have fun. Even if the Alpha turns out to not be your mate, when you find your mate, you’ll be glad it wasn’t the Alpha.”
“Thanks, Dad,” I said, going to give him a hug, which he gladly reciprocated. I had never heard such profound words. They were so real.” so true and if the situation wasn’t so different, it would be a wonderful piece of advice to look back on. Well, it still was.
My dad offered to drive me to the pack house and I was super grateful. I felt like a teenager going to prom again except like all the other attendees, I did not have a date, I was only anticipating to be announced as prom queen because only the prom queen could get the prom king.
The ballroom was absolutely beautiful and magical. They had asked me to help out since I had an ‘artistic mind‘ but I mindfully declined. I wanted to be awed when I got here, not used to it because I had been a part of making it come to life.

special and I hoped the rest of the night would be as magical as I thought this place to be.
I was neither too early nor too late as the room looked filled to a reasonable amount when I came in and there were still more to come.
I think the highlight of my entrance was having women around my age staring at me in complete awe. That’s when I realized that it was definitely more of an accomplishment for a woman to think you’re pretty than a man because while it may make you feel good coming from a man you like, men majorly think with their dicks but women? We know this stuff.
Consciously or unconsciously, I began to scan the room for Alexander immediately after I walked in. The place was really rowdy and I gave up on craning my head to see above people and tuned in to the bond instead.
When I finally found him, he was somewhere in the front a couple of feet away from me conversing with a bunch of people and I stopped in my tracks not sure if I should go to him.
It had been at least a week since I really saw him and something seemed quite different which I couldn’t quite place my finger on until I saw that it was the immense tiredness in his eyes and even more so, the small stubble of a beard that he had grown.
I wondered if it was a new style or it was a supplement to the stress I could see in his eyes. His outfit was impeccable and something bloomed in my chest when I saw that the tie he was wearing inside his suit actually matched my gown. His was a bit darker but still!
Either way, he looked handsome as always, with his hair styled to perfection. I stared shamelessly even though I knew he would most definitely feel it until the music started and I moved to the snack table not fancying the idea of dancing with a ton of men I did not know.
Besides, my mood was getting damper and damper by the moment. I watched Alexander dance with a ton of girls coming to realize that the

aim was to dance with all of them until he found his mate. What was the point of that though when he could just come to me and take my hand and declare that he had found her? Why dance with everyone when he already knew who she was?
I stood there sulking until someone tapped on my shoulder. I knew it was Blake before I even turned to meet his warm smile. I mustered a small one back and seconds later he was asking me to follow him to the dance floor
I hesitated at first but I realized that to be fair, Blake was not a random guy that I didn’t know, and besides I could use some distraction from my depressive thoughts so I took his hand and he grinned before sweeping me onto the dance floor.
The music was thankfully not so slow and after a while, I could find myself loosening up and when Blake dipped me, his hand supporting my waist as I went really low, I felt such an adrenaline rush that I came up laughing.
That was when I finally caught Alexander’s eyes and the hardness in them. almost made me lose my footing if Blake was not quick enough to tighten his grip around my waist, loosening it once more once I was steady.
Thankfully the song had come to an end and I curtsied to Blake while he bowed before I politely declined the next dance. When I looked at Alexander again, I realized that all my thoughts for today were nothing but a fantasy. If he planned to acknowledge us today, he should’ve at least spared me a smile or a kind look, shouldn’t he?
How could I have thought that things could change in only a couple of days? Except I really didn’t.
I was actually counting on him being unable to pick some random lady as his mate when I was very much alive and he would have no choice but to accept me so we could work on our differences.
Now as I watched him dance with more women, probably looking for the

How could I believe that someone who accused me of being a whore after sleeping with me himself would ever accept me to be his mate and Luna?
And the bigger question was that was I really going to sit around and allow him to completely waste my time until he finally decided that he was ready to reject me like he probably planned from the start.
