Chapter 5 He was a Fraud
Katheryn’s POV:
My heart felt as light as a feather all day long. Knowing that someone was waiting for me at home made me genuinely happy, and I couldn’t deny it. Even when I bumped into people who felt like they had the right to judge me, I didn’t give them the cold shoulder. Instead, I just shrugged it off and moved on.
But then, a single phone call shattered all my joy.

When I went to jail, they didn’t bother to visit me once. Being the father of a murderer severely damaged my father’s reputation. He ignored me completely as if I had never existed as his daughter.

Why would my father suddenly want me to come home?
I felt tired and miserable. I tried calling out to my wolf, Thea. The day my mother passed away was the day I awakened the Alpha wolf. It was like being reborn, and Thea’s power made me strong. I was the top student in the werewolf school, and then I met Simon.
But now, I had nothing left. The glorious moments of the past only intensified my heartache.
As soon as I entered the house, I saw my father sitting with his back to me, surrounded by empty bottles of alcohol. My stepmother had a red slap mark on her face and was standing by the wall, giving me a resentful glare, as if it were my fault she had been beaten. Only my stepsister, Jessica, said, “Katheryn, you’re back.”
I bit my lip, sensing some trouble, and wished I could leave immediately. But my father spoke in that commanding tone that demanded obedience, “I made a bad investment and now I owe a crapload of money. You’re gonna help me pay it off.”
“I have no money,” I blurted out almost instinctively. And it was true. I was just a lowly janitor scraping by. Where was I gonna get that kind of cash?
My stepmom started freaking out, pointing her finger at me and snapping, “What about all those fancy jewelry, designer bags, and clothes that Simon gave you when you were dating? If you sold that stuff, you’d have plenty of cash, wouldn’t you?”

My father let out a few scornful grunts, blaming me for being useless. He took another sip of his drink and continued commanding me, “I don’t care if you’re broke or not. You better bring me the money by next Monday.”
I swallowed my growing anger, struggling to keep my voice and tone in check as I calmly replied, “When I was suffering in that prison, not a single one of you bothered to visit me. So now, I have no obligation to help you.”
My stepmom looked incredulous, clutching her chest as she said, “You killed someone! You deserve to be punished!”
Jessica chimed in, sounding innocent, “Katheryn, you killed Wilson Bright’s fiancée. He’s a super dangerous guy who can take down a dozen werewolves in one go! How could we help you? We’re lucky enough that we didn’t get caught up in your
mess.”
My eyes turned red as I looked at this cold–hearted and selfish family of mine. My resentment reached its peak. Yes, Jessica was right. They couldn’t afford to mess with dangerous people, so they completely abandoned me. If that’s the case, why the hell did they have the audacity to come asking for my help now?
“Well, sorry to disappoint you, but I don’t have any money,” I emphasized again.
Finally, my father turned around. His face, flushed from the alcohol, glared at me with rage. His bloated features and meaty face were full of fury as he knocked over all the bottles, shattering them on the floor. The sound of glass breaking startled my stepmom and stepsister, making them jump back

This pathetic man, an alcoholic who abused his wife and daughter, stood up and cursed at me, “I don’t have a daughter like you! You are a murderer! You whore! You filthy, despicable piece of shit… You don’t have money? Then why don’t you sell your body?”
He approached me, getting more and more worked up, his spittle even landing on my face.
“What can you do after being in jail?”
“You can only be a whore!”
I never expected such venomous words to come from the mouth of my father. I didn’t care if it were a stranger looking down on me, but even my father degraded me like this. No, he was no longer my father.
I glared at him with resentment and hatred. If my wolf, Thea, were here, he wouldn’t stand a chance against me, let alone have the opportunity to insult me.
Seeing me looking at him like an enemy, my father exploded in rage. He swung his hand to slap me, and I couldn’t dodge it in time. I was knocked down to the ground, while my
stepmom and stepsister coldly watched, showing no intention of helping me.
“How dare you stare at me like that, you… you…” My father searched for something he could use to beat me.
But I had regained my clarity. I was innocent, but nobody believed me, including my so–called family. That slap severed all my hopes for any semblance of family bonds.

“Well then, won’t be your daughter anymore,” I uttered those words, leaving him stunned. I scrambled to my feet and stormed out the door.
I ran back to my rented house, consumed by madness.
I recalled Will’s smile, a smile that brought me a hint of warmth. Right now, all I wanted was to see him again. He was the only stranger in three years who was willing to get close to me and lend me a helping hand.
As I approached the narrow path and caught sight of the small cottage in the distance, I already knew that my hope was shattered once again.
No lights were on, and the house was engulfed in darkness. I pushed open the door, only to find complete silence inside. Will had taken the coins I gave him and left. He was a fraud, just like everyone else who abandoned me.
I didn’t cry, nor did I scream in anger. I simply let out a deep sigh. In the end, I was still all alone.
I chuckled at myself in self–derision and was about to turn around and close the door. But then, I froze as I saw a figure slowly approaching me.
